Sleep

3 month old inconsolable in evenings

Hi all, just that really, dd was sleeping fine up until a few weeks ago and now it is terrible. She fights napping in the evenings and can go without a nap from 4pm till 2:00am, by which point she looks so tired and cries uncontrollably. I have tried and tried to get her to sleep but she just fights and fights and even when she has given in and gone to sleep the second I put her down, she screams the house down. She sleeps in a bedside crib and has never struggled too much with getting to sleep but im sat here typing this with her crying on my lap after trying to put her down after she fell asleep.

I have no idea what to do and am so tired, as when she finally does sleep it is very disturbed and she wakes me up several times an hour.

All advice greatfully appreciated, thank you for reading.

My advice would be to co sleep. It will pass, I promise.

My little one did this, you have my full sympathies! Turned out to be reflux. Have you looked into that at all? I know babies like to be cuddles but that period of time with. No sleep is not normal so you need to get it checked out. If it is reflux medicine works wonders for it!

At 12 weeks baby shouldn't be having more than 90 minutes awake between naps (ideally 60 minutes). So 10 hours awake 4pm-2am is absolutely and completely sleep deprivation for your baby. Way, way, way too much awake time.

Don't worry about anything else just entirely focus on getting your baby to sleep, however it is possible. Just sleep anywhere, anyhow.

Does she have a dummy?

Have you tried a swaddle?

How is her feeding?

I will look into both co sleeping and reflux, thank you both. She has fallen asleep and I have put her down and will see if it lasts.

You need to lift her head higher than her tummy so no acid escapes back up and burns her throat. Every time you put her down shes in pain. Dies she sleep ok in the pram or car seat? Try a folded towel under the matress.

She has a dummy and it has always helped until now. We havent tried swaddling but will give it a go. She feeds very well and never even lost any of her birth weight follows 91st centile consistently she is breastfed.
She sleeps laying flat for naps in the day, in a travel cot downstairs or crib upstairs, she napped really well today I though she would sleep better tonight but it isnt looking good. Daddy is having a go for a minute.

I know that she is up way too long but I am really struggling to get her to sleep in any position at night, when she falls asleep on me I only move her because I worry I'm so tired I might hurt her if I fall asleep as well.

Thank you for all the responses it is helping me stay sane tonight

What are her nap times during the day? What about feeding times? Or is she breastfed?

Do you use a sleeping bag?

X post!

My DS cluster fed like mad in the evenings at that age... Any chance she's hungry?

We went through this too.

It was reflux.

Ended up having to give up bf and give dc baby gaviscon.

I try to feed her but she cries as shes eating and doesnt take much in, she wriggles around a lot too, I try again once shes calm but she often doesnt even latch on. She has settled at the moment but I feel like I cant go to sleep because Im too tired to wake up if she needs me. I will try to feed her if she starts to stir again.

Thank you again just having something to do in between crying is helping tonight and I really need it, things are really starting to get me down, not just this but it certainly isnt helping.

She went down at around 2 and had a much better sleep than normal and had about 5 hours which is amazing, she looks so tired this morning so hopefully she can have a big nap while I put some things in place ready for tonight. We have got jabs today though so it's cuddles galore tonight.

How're you getting on today Bambi?

Hi CanISay, she hardly napped at all this morning and I was getting really worried but although she has been grumbly since her jabs she has had a little more sleep.

We have also tried something which the chemist adviced us about. We were giving her infracol incase it was colic and it wasnt doing anything so we thought it must be something else but the chemist pointed us towards some other colic drops. They were insanely expensive but we thought we would give them a try, she has had them with every feed since then and has gone to sleep without the grunting and wiggling around. She may well wake up yet because it has only been 10 mins but she isnt anywhere near as upset as she usually is at this time in the evenings. It could just be shes worn out from the jabs but we will see more clearly as time passes.

Thank you for asking, I have been trying to be proactive today to try and improve some of the things that are getting me down, where possible, sleep could help in the other areas too. Fingers tightly crossed. xx

Sounds like reflux to me too . Don't suffer any longer - go to gp and get some gavison - we gave to DS for a month or 2 with his feeds and was pretty instant in helping his pain. That and propping up one one of his crib with some books!

I will ask gp about it reflux she is going tomorrow about another issue and I will discuss it then. I will try propping up with a towel too. Thanks

Well last night was so much better, she still went to bed really late but she wasnt crying as though something was hurting. We had used the colic drops but I think what helped was tilting the mattress up at th head end, she was in a deep sleep and managed 5 hours and then 3 hours after that. A huge thank you for all the advice, I have to admit I didnt think it was reflux because she doesnt bring up much milk but maybe it was.

I am already starting to feel a little human, hopefully it will continue. xxxxx

What did the GP think about reflux? Hopefully it will be a little better tonight and you can get some rest Smile

My DS never brought up much milk but he had reflux. The medicine and propping up his cot did the trick and he went back to being a happy baby. Good luck!

Agree with previous posters it could be reflux but also could be colic. Our dd had that from three months for about 8 weeks and then stopped as sharply as it had started. Could you get your little one to fall asleep in a sling upright. Might help. My partner used to walk around our place in a circuit to try to settle our dd at the height of her colic. I'm surprised he didn't wear our carpet out. And then transfer to bed once more deeply asleep, waiting at least 20mins. I always found dd would wake if I put her down to soon after she dropped off.

Hi all, GP was rubbish and told me she didnt think it was reflux because she isnt bringing up much milk and that it would pass. We had another bad night last night and today she has struggled to eat, stopping to cough or just wriggling and not latching on, we were both getting really upset. I took her to the chemist and they agreed that it did sound like reflux and gave me infant gaviscon to try, she has had some and iv just put her down in her crib, its been 15 mins so far and not a peep. Iv also tilted the crib so fingers crossed we will have better luck tonight

I have also found that putting her down too quickly would wake her Babymamamama so we have had 15 mins sleeping on me before she went into her crib.

Good luck. Hope things improve for you. Great idea to ask the pharmacist. Sometimes the GPs are jack of all trades, master of none.

Hi, its not really recognised here but big in america, they have the right equipment like cots changing mats to keep them.upright. A lot of babies have a weak mussel at the top of their stomach that corrects itself at 6 months which lets acid seep into the throat. You can help by not lying the baby flat ever!! Good luck.
