Blackout ideas

Hello, I'm moving my son into his new room soon, and want to be able to make it as dark as possible. My problem is the bedroom window is HUGE. We have blackout curtains and are looking to get a blackout blind. The width of the window is so long that I don't think we can use a roller blind that only fixes either end (I can just see it falling off because of the weight) So my next option is blackout vertical blind. However, from what I've read blackout vertical blinds let in loads of light still all around the edges. Anyone got any ideas or tips?? thanks

What is the width of the windows? (ish)

Our windows are 3.2m wide and we have blackout roller blinds in the children's rooms. We had to specially order then though, weren't available in main high street shops. Google should find you a few companies.

Our room has black out vertical blinds and you are right - not very black out. Darker than normal vertical blinds, but not a patch on roller blinds. The benefit though is they are better for letting air from an open window in.

I got blackout material on Amazon along with stick on Velcro. Put the Velcro around the window frame and stick it on every night (in summer) not the prettiest look in the world but it works

I think ours are 3m + too. we had roller blinds in his last room and I know they would be more practical. Did they go up ok?? I just imagine because of the length I'll be pulling on the cord one day and one sides are just going to fall down!

We got easyblinds - basically a sheet of blackout material that you attach to tthe frame with velcro strips. it does create a very good blackout and is easy enough to take up and down but doesn't look smart exactly.

You'd have to see if you could get a sheet big enough for your window.

I have done blackout curtains + blackout blinds together which doesn't look too bad, the blackout curtains sort of mop up any light the vertical blind lets through iyswim. I have also nailed roofing felt over a window but those were very desperate times...
How old is your son? In my experience it is only for that first summer that they wake up very early, by the time the next year comes round they have learnt to sleep through the sun coming up at 5 or they can put up with only minimal heavy curtain or normal blind.
It is not a good idea for child to get too used to total darkness (see roofing felt above) and we only made that mistake once!

Very easy - literally just sticks/ rips off a bit like Velcro on shoes but a larger scale!

Juniorcakeoff he's 3, since the clocks changed he's been getting up an hour earlier and telling me the suns out now! It's only 6am which would be fine if he then wasn't miserable all day because he could of done with that extra hour. I just worry because last year once summer hit it was bright around 5am and I don't do 5am!

We got a super long roller blind at Ikea - only high street we could find to sell one.

We had blackout blinds made to measure for the DC's rooms. They both have windows 2.6 m wide.

We got blackout curtain liners from John Lewis, they hooked into the top of the existing curtains which were already bigger than the window so shut out all the light pretty much.
