2 year old night screaming

My two year old has never been a great sleeper but more often than not would sleep soundly once she was down. However, for the past few weeks she has woken up virtually every hour screaming for her daddy. If we don't rush to try and resettle her straight away she will get out of bed, hysterical and bang on our door. She mainly wants to sleep in our bed, which we have let her on a couple of rare sleep deprived occasions.
We have never let her 'cry it out' and I don't think I want to go down that route particularly because she shares her room. We have always had a gentle, calming bedtime routine and a regular bed time. We have a night light on, she's not too hot or cold. We tell her that we will leave the room and return in five minutes to check on her.... But she still gets hysterical! I'm at the end of my tether!
Last night was particularly bad, after eventually going to sleep at 1 she was then up again at 4 screaming on the landing.
Any suggestions? Please help! Thanks in advance.

Crikey! I could have written this! Afraid no useful advise but lurking in case some mega mummy comes along! Please at least find comfort that it's not just your little monkey up tonight screaming blue murder!
