Mattress question

Hello, baby 2 is on the way and dd is out of her cot so baby will have that when he's 6 months old. My question is, should I buy a new mattress? If the cot was second hand from someone else I would but is there a reason it needs one if it's been used in a known way?

I'm happy to buy a new one but wondered if it's necessary.

I'm no expert but I'd say if you bought the mattress brand new for dc1 and you store it well and it hasn't been damaged it should be fine to use. Also depends how old it is I guess but if it's been in constant use I would think it to be fine

I bought a new one because there was a DS shaped dent in the old one as he'd slept on it for 3 years. Depends what state it's in I guess

Thanks, it's looks fine. It was used for about 2 yrs and 3 months and has just been in the cot since (dd only stopped using it in august). I might just keep it then.

I didnt buy a new one but the top cover could be removed and washed and the mattress itself was waterproof and could be cleaned too.

That's a good idea

My understanding was a new mattress for each child if at all possible for SIDS prevention.

Ah see hari I've not heard that before. So maybe it should be a new one. But how does it prevent SIDS?

there is a small increased risk if a second hand mattress is used that has come from another family. There is not as much risk if used by a sibling
