Sleep

Standing up in cot

My 9 month old DD has been a poor sleeper since around 5 months and needs to be rocked to sleep several times a night. I'm starting to struggle with this as the night wakings are becoming more and more frequent so I want to try and get her to self settle. However if I put her down awake she will just persistently stand up in her cot and get angry with me when I try to lie her down. How am I best off tackling this issue?

Hi Rtfairy. I had a very similar issue with my DD. Lack of sleep is really hard to deal with so I completely empathise with your situation!

Each baby is different but with my DD, she started almost compulsively standing up around 10 months on the back of being poorly so she had been sleeping with me. I'd put her in her cot and she would stand up and yell and yell. In the end I just used to go in and say 'lie down', lie her down, give her a quick kiss and leave. She would immediately get up and yell again so I'd leave it 2 minutes and go in and do the same and just kept at it until she fell asleep and then did the same on the night wakings. The first few nights were pretty horrific but gradually she got better.

I dislike most of the books out there but I did like Andrea Grace's Gentle Sleep Solution as it doesn't give you one solution it just talks through all the different issues so you can pick something which you feel suits you and your baby.

Hope it gets sorted soon, good luck!
