Night time breathing worries

Hi I just wanted some advice/experience.

Fives days ago we started doing comtrolled crying on my 7 month old as we need to stop co sleeping, it's not hoping badly but since we started he has become really wheezy at night and horses cough. I don't know whether it's because he is getting worked up before sleep and therefore making it happen or more serious. He is completely fine during day and once with us if brought to us

I phoned 111 yesterday morning and they phoned an ambulance (anything to do with problems breathing in children they call) the checks all came back fine and spoke to a dr on phone who said he'd not heard of anything like this before. Taking him to gp tomorrow again in case.

I was wondering if anyone has had this before? I am worried about asthma although dr wasn't.

Thanks

Ps. Pls don't tell me about the evils of cc

Hmmm, it does sound like it might be related to getting worked up if it settles when he's in with you. However a dry night-time cough with or without wheeze can be a sign of asthma.

Does your DS have eczema or allergies or are there any of these or asthma in the family (asthma is quite unusual in the absence of a family history of one or all of these)? Does he have the cough through the night or is it just when he's getting to sleep?

Asthma is difficult to diagnose under the age of 1 because so many DCs get a wheeze with the myriad viral infections they'll have in the first year or two. If it's a viral wheeze they'll generally have a runny nose/sneezing etc as well, and of course it will resolve within a week or two.

Either way in this age group the response to inhalers, whatever the cause, tends to be hit and miss so you're unlikely to lose anything by adopting a wait and see approach, assuming the cough isn't bothering him too much and he's not working hard with his breathing; if it's viral it should settle; if it's because of the CC then once you've cracked that it should settle (though if he's really getting into a state I'd be tempted to take a break unless you're almost there...); if it's asthma it may persist.

HTH!

Thanks for replying, he doesn't have any allergies but I had asthma as a child and his half sister does which is what is concerning me so much.

The cough doesn't seem to bother him and I check his chest as the paramedics suggested to make sure he's not struggling.

The problem with stopping the cc is that when he is in with us he doesn't sleep properly and neither does me or dp and once he does sleep in his cot he sleeps longer, will speak to dr tomorrow and see what he suggests butay so it tonight and keep an eye on him, as managed 5 nights so far

Well from what I've read re CC you should be nearly there then!

If the cough/wheeze is just during that time, not distressing him in itself, and he's fine during the day I wouldn't think it's a major problem. Worth a check-up with GP though as you say Smile
