sleep positioner for a 6 month old? help!

We're really struggling with our baby's night sleep recently. Having been a great sleeper up until about 4 and a half months, the last 6 weeks of which he slept through from 8 till 5, since then he wakes up constantly, at one point it was 11 times in the night and he last few nights 5 times.

We are weaning him and he's been on 3 meals for about 2 weeks now having gradually gone from a few spoons to proper meals, eats well and drinks the recommended amount of milk and so I don't think this is the issue. I also don't think it's teething - he has 2 bottom ones but no signs of more.

He has I suppose always fed to sleep, in that the last bit of his bedtime routine is a bottle and then he stays awake for a few minutes and then nods of contently in my arms. We took steps to sleep train and went with controlled crying which worked really well the first two nights, then not so much.

Yesterday we bought him an elephant which projects stars and has some white noise and he dropped off by himself within 10 mins no real fuss but still woke 5 times. We've fed him on a couple of occasions wondering if its a growth spurt but he doesn't drink much and although it puts him back to sleep its only for maybe an hour-90 minutes.

His daytime routine is really good, and we're working on the 2-3-4 hr naps so he has one for an hour around 8.30-9.30 and one for 2 hrs from around 12.30-2.30/3 ish then in bed asleep by around 7pm. This works really well for us and means he's in line with the recommended nightime sleep of 11 hrs and naps of 3 hrs for his age. I don't really think this needs changing, because he sort of worked himself into it, once he started being able to stay awake longer than 2 hrs.

I genuinely think this is a developmental issue. It started when he started wanting to sleep on his side when he started learning to roll over and its gotten worse the last week since he started really wanting to learn to crawl - he goes backwards and hasn't quite mastered pushing up onto his knees quite yet. When he wakes up in the night, its not like before where he'd shuffle a little make a few little noises and either settle himself back down or wake up properly, it full on instant 'I need attention' crying and he's usually up on his front head in the air.

We've caved the last few nights and had him in bed with us from 3 am onwards just so we get a little rest, but that's really not a habit I want to start.

My last thought, is a sleep positioner, this one is looking appealing as the others seem to be for newborns - www.amazon.co.uk/Snoozzz-Sleep-Positioner-and-Sleepwrap/dp/B002P98G46/ref=sr_1_7?s=baby&ie=UTF8&qid=1408975097&sr=1-7&keywords=baby%20sleep%20positioner&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21#productDetails

Really in need of some advice here - I'm starting to get a short temper from lack of sleep and am sniping at DP and the baby. Really need to nip this in the bud as I go back to work in 7 weeks. Also snoozing during his naps used to be fine but am needing to use this time to find actual job to go back to (setting up my own business as previous role in events is NOT baby friendly).
