Sleep

What age did your toddler drop daytime naps?

I have a 22 month old who is a good sleeper and has been sleeping for 1-2 hours during the day.

I normally rock him to sleep in his pushchair and he nods off in about 10 mins and then I carry him upstairs but in the last week he has really resisted staying in his pushchair and then only slept for 45 mins.

Today I have had to put him in his cot and leave him with a story cd and a couple of toys as I'm 37 weeks pg and needed the rest myself. He did finally drop off after 55 mins and is asleep now.

I'm thinking I may just have to do this in future so he at least has some quiet time even if he doesn't sleep.

My 30 month old usually naps for 1.5 - 2 hours at home but not with her childminder, she finds the environment too stimulating! Occasionally she will refuse to nap but still play by herself in her room for a while. I think she will cut out naps by the time she is 3. I think a "quiet time" is a good idea. I've only had one child but I've heard that some children CAN nap during the day but then aren't ready for bed at night or wake up very early in the morning. Parents then prefer to cut out the nap rather than have later bedtimes/early waking. It depends on what works best for you. If he is happy to be put in his cot with a few toys I would do that, and put your feet up while you get the chance!

DS2 will be 3 at the end of November - he still naps for anything from 1-3hrs (usually about 2).

DS1 however stopped on his own at 18 months!

DS1 is 21 months and has 2 hours during the day. The day that he drops his nap will be a terrible day indeed!

DS, 2.9, still has a couple of hours in the afternoon, then does 12 at night.

Not long after 2... maybe 2.3. Solved our problems in one go. dd was taking forever to sleep in the evening, but since has rarely taken more than 15 minutes.

although I thought we'd miss that quiet time in the middle of the day, it did mean we were a lot more flexible with hours in terms of being able to do stuff late morning or early afternoon.

My ds1 will be four in a couple of weeks and he STILL has an hour in the afternoon quite often - he's tired after his morning at preschool. When he comes home he has a play outside in his sandpit, or a trip to the park, then a bit of reading/a game, lunch, maybe a video or story tape - then he has a nap. I usually put my 2yo up at about 2.30, then put ds1 up around 3.30, then get them both down for dinner at about 5. If they don't want to sleep they are allowed to get up and have a "quiet play" instead. It works well - IMO 3/4yos are still very little and need a lot of sleep. He still sleeps through the night and doesn't wake up until 7.30ish.

DD has just dropped her nap and she is 2yrs 5 mths. She was taking an hour to go to sleep in the afternoon and at least an hour to go to sleep at night, since dropping her nap she drops of straight away in the evening. I've found it much more flexible for making arrangements etc

Jess is 2.2 and is dropping them now. she is napping every other day at the moment - playing catch up on a day without one!

She is really quite poorly today and slept for 3 hours this morning once we got back from a&e x

Roisin is 3.9 and still has a nap if we're going out in the evening or if she's had a particularly busy day.

Regular napping didn't really stop until a few months ago though

JandR'smummy - hope she's an OK little lamb and on the mend soon

dd is 2.2 and has an hour at nursery and around two if she's at home (less stimulating environment I think).

She went through a phase of not wanting a nap but seems to have decided to carry on with it for now.

Long may it continue

nicand2 sounds like you have found a good way to deal with your ds - he'll be fine in his cot by himself for a little while, you need a rest.

(JARM poor love hope she's OK)

she is not too bad thank you - meningitis scare - stiff neck, temp etc but thankfully nurofen and calpol have pretty much sorted her!

ROll on bed time though - its been a hell of a day!

dd is four next week and stopped her day nap beofre the summer, coming home from nursery she'd have a little quiet time and nod off but has since stopped that. can still get cranky around 6/7pm as a result but bed at 7.50pm is marvellous.
