Sleep

9 week old - won't sleep for more than hour during day

Hello,
I am new to the board - I have a 9 week old girl who won't sleep for more than an hour a time during the day (she sleeps from about 10pm until 5am at night). All the baby books would seem to suggest that she should be having at least one 2-21/2 hour nap every day. She just doesn't seem interested in sleeping for very long. She is breastfed and still only going 2-3 hours between feeds so that could have something to do with it.

Should I try to be getting her to sleep more or just accept it and get on with it?! Thanks.

hi there i have 9 week old too... he wont do more than an hour either - at lunchtime I end up trying to get him off twice so that he might get 2 hours...otherwise he's v grumpy and can't last all afternoon. i use a dummy at the moment to get him off but that doesnt make him necessarily go more than an hour. he too sleeps from 10.30pm til 5 - 6am so i really can't get too worked up about the day time altho would be nice to have that time off to get stuff done wouldnt it - praps be thankful that they do those hour stints and that they also do that long stint at night!! he's bottle fed.

As one who tried to fight it in my first child and ended up very unhappy, I would say just accept that's the way she is! Once I did that and stopped the daily battle to make dd do something she didn't seem to want to or be able to life suddenly became much easier

Good luck

(also would've been over the moon for 10 -5 at night...)

Mine was the same - slept through the night very early on but the price we paid for that was her hardly sleeping at all during the day.
Definitely go with the flow, especially if she's breastfed on demand. (Mine sleeps more now she's older, too.)

It's good to hear someone is in the same boat! As you say not a huge problem but it's hard getting anything done. My DD is v active when awake - v alert and wriggly. She is v grumpy in evenings I think because she hasn't slept enough but I can't force her. Like you, would rather get the night sleep given the choice. Went cold turkey on the dummy when she woke up rooting for it at night (was a nightmare.

Thanks - good to know that my DD is not the only one!
