Controlled crying with a late (dream) feed?

My 6 month is so inconsistent with his sleep - some nights up every 2 hours, some nights will sleep for 6 hours then restless the rest of the night, some nights will wake up, have a quick resettle and go back down meaning 8 hours between feeds, some nights will scream at me for an hour even if he's been fed an hour ago so I give in and feed him again to calm him down! He is able to resettle himself and sometimes he does but maybe 30% of the time.

We have consistent bedtime routine and he naps and feeds well in the day.

So. My husband and I want to do CC - I know it's controversial but I'm beginning to feel quite low about the whole thing.

He did once (once!!!) sleep nearly 10 hours between feeds but normally the longest he'll go is 7/8 hours and he is a little on the small side so my question is: can I incorporate CC with a feed at say, 11pm?

HV student I spoke to seemed to think this was inconsistent with the technique and I worry about what if he wakes up at 10 - do we wait for him to go to sleep again and then wake him to feed him? He used to dream feed (stopped on advice of HV) and when I tried the other day he's forgotten how to do it (!) so I think I would have to wake him up to feed.

Would be interested to hear any thoughts on this. Sorry this is so long!

Should also add that at the moment, on average I feed him maybe twice a night - he doesn't take full feeds - maybe 5/10 minutes each time - whereas in the day his feeds are 25 minutes!

7 to 8 hours is a massive sleep. (not jealous at all) He is a tiny baby and can still need feeding at night.

Waking at night is completely normal for him, and if he feeds and settles happily, I would think that's a lot easier than staying awake listening to crying?
