Sleep

Does this sound about right? 13 week old sleep...or lack thereof

Hi

DS born 13 weeks ago and, up until 2-3 weeks ago had terrible reflux and digestive issues. I was convinced he needed medication but dr just passed me off as a hysterical first time mum and I just had to accept I had a "colicky" baby.

Although DS would fall asleep, he would spend the entire night writhing and groaning and screaming in his sleep, until he would wake himself up and be inconsolable.

We averaged about 4 hours of sleep a night. No naps during the day either.

Now he's been on ranitidine for a few weeks, along with a change of formula, he's a different baby. He actually smiles! He laughs! He sleeps!

Given how awful things were before, any additional sleep has been a godsend. However, everyone I speak to seems surprise he isn't sleeping through the night "yet" (and here was me thinking we were doing so well!)

After bath and feed he's down for 7.30-8 pm
Dream feed at 1030
Then, depending on how much he eats, he'll sleep til between 330-4
Then feed and down again til 620 on the dot where, if I'm quick enough with the dummy, he'll perhaps doze til 715.

We're also up to 2 naps of 1-2h and1 nap of 45ma day.

He's a truly terrible feeder so even though the DF isn't working, I'm loathe to drop it as he really doesn't take enough during the day.

Does this sound about right? Obviously I'd love for him to sleep through but I think he's far too little (and traumatised!) but I keep getting told that he "should" be going 7-7 by now

Sounds perfectly normal! My DS was very similar around that age. Don't let other people stress you out about what your baby "should" be doing. I think it would be unusual to sleep for 12 hours straight at that age.

Sounds great. And it also sounds like the dream feed is working, if he's going up to 6 hours afterwards.

DD is 14 weeks and she has a similar-ish sleep pattern. Bath and feed at 8.30ish, asleep by 9ish, usually has a feed at 2ish and again at 6ish. She also has a long nap in the morning and one late afternoon, along with at least one shorter one in between.

I'm very happy with the way things are and I consider myself to be lucky with how she sleeps.

I'm pretty sure it's bollocks that a 13wo should be sleeping through.

Sorry, 5 hours. I can't count.

I read that 3 month olds 'can' sleep through the night, but it's more common for them to wake 1-3 times, which sounds about right from what I've seen on here Smile

My life was revolutionised by a website someone else posted on here. I think it was Isis sleep site. It clearly explains why babies don't and shouldn't sleep trough the night and the days quoting that babies should sleep through the night from 12 weeks meant ff bed babies not sharing a bedroom with parents and was between midnight and 5 am. It's a really helpful site. Maybe someone can post link again?

Wow! I think that's really great sleep to be honest!!

My 10 month old doesn't sleep through yet!

They are all different and get to that magical "sleep through" stage in their own time when it's right for them. Don't worry about what "they" say....his routine is obviously working for both of you so that's winning!!

I second the ISIS sleep site. Really interesting.

FWIW, I think you're getting more sleep than many!
