Sleep

We're at the end of our tether and it's starting to fray.....

8month dd2 has recently learnt to stand up in her cot and is on autopilot overdrive. She still wakes twice a night. If her eyes are open, she stands. She hasn't perfected the art of sleeping whilst standing up - so she just stays awake, getting more and more frantic as she gets overtired.

Helping her to lie down makes her furious and seems like a waste of everyone's time and energy - have tried it for periods of up to 2 hours with no success. We've been putting her "to bed" in her car seat in front of the TV for 3 weeks - worked a treat for 10 days - but now she's needing the same in the middle of the night and starting to fight it at her initial bedtime too.

...this is horrible...where on earth do we go from here?

Is she in a sleeping bag?

Oh I know how you feel!.

We just had sleep times sorted then Ds learnt to stand in his cot and it has made things a zillion times harder. Made worse by teething though.

We are trying the baby whisperer technique. Pick up/Put Down method, except when they stand up you just do the put down part. Each night we are having to do it less and less and eventually he settles himself, but it hard going.

Sending lots of sympathy your way.......

...will discuss another attempt at PUPD with dh - she finds it SO hard to relax at the best of times....

...no, FrayedKnot, no sleeping bag for as long as the temp remains above 25C in her room...she'd frie. Have decided it's ok if she's a bit hot in her car seat but that she'll cool down when we do put her in her bed and she's deeply unconscious.

....hoping for improvements now it's a bit cooler though!

I know it probably doesn't help when you are in the middle of it, but sleep disturbances around the time of big developmental milestones (like standing) are really common, but often short lived. It's sometimes as if they are practising the new skill in their sleep and wake themselves up to find they are standing, which frightens them.

A very light sleeping bag and a fan in her room could help - or could lead to accidents as she still tries to stand? Might be worth a try for one night. Meanwhile I would not do anything drastically different but just persevere and hope that it is a temporary phase which will soon pass.
