Read the book, baby!

Can someone please explain to my dd that the baby book I have says that by 8 weeks (today) she should be sleeping for 5 hour stretches at night? I don't think she got the memo.
Last night the longest stretch of sleep was 2hrs. And she only woke up hungry once (at 2, as she always does). The other times were because she was gassy/constipated/had farted herself awake.

I feel like I'm going round in circles. When first born, she was really gassy so didn't sleep. Then she got reflux. We put her on reflux milk, which helped both problems, but now she's constipated, which again keeps her awake. Am giving her water but this just makes the reflux bad again.

I feel like if we found the magic solution to all these problems then she would sleep beautifully, because she naps well during the day, self settles when content at night and only really needs one night feed.

Just feeling a bit fed up with it all today.

Life would be so much easier if these babies
read the books!! Have you tried aptamill colic
and constipation milk? Or getting some
gaviscon or ranitidine for her reflux? Worth
a go maybe. Also massaging DS's tummy
In a clockwise motion worked really well for
his gas at that age.
DS grew out of the colic/ gas at 11/12weeks
( which is standard) so hang in there!

I'm going to give the colic/constipation milk a go today. Fingers crossed for a miracle cure, as always. Hopefully it will be ok for the reflux too, as it's thickened and her reflux wasn't too severe.
In the meantime, we've had a chat about how last night wasn't her best work. She just lies there looking like butter wouldn't melt. I don't think she's taking on board what I'm saying at all.

That's hilarious. DS never listens to my strict
talking toos either! It's almost like they don't
know what we mean....;)
Seriously tho, good luck. I'm still waiting for the STTN, my
niece did it at 11 weeks dammit! Was really
thinking by 6m I would be having nice long
nights of uninterrupted sleep....! Come on,
babies!!!

Has she been checked for tongue tie? Honestly this could explain the gas and the reflux and the crap sleep.

SummerSevern Fri 13-Sep-13 15:10:16

I don't know, minipie. The mw looked into her mouth when she was born and said everything was was normal. I've looked myself and I can't see anything. Is it something that I'd be able to spot?

minipie Fri 13-Sep-13 15:27:57

Hmm not really something you can see yourself, but good that the MW had a look at least. Any other signs of TT such as shallow latch (nipple only), clicking while feeding, having to be relatched often and getting frustrated, white or flat nipples after feeds, "clamping" feeling when feeding? If not then I'm probably just chucking red herrings into the mix smile

SummerSevern Fri 13-Sep-13 15:47:15

She's ff. She feeds fine on the thicker reflux reflux milk and she's gaining weight fine. She also latched quite well from the start. So on reflection I don't think that's it. But thanks for the suggestion and I'll ask my hv to check on Monday.
I'm coming to the conclusion that there isn't a quick fix solution to all this. Im sure there are people out there who have it much worse than me. It's just that she's my pfb so I don't know how much is problems that we need to fix and how much is normal baby baby problems, IYSWIM?

minipie Fri 13-Sep-13 16:10:11

sorry duh missed that she was ff. totally know the pfb not a clue feeling, dd is 10 months and I am still there!

Shatteredmamma1 Sun 15-Sep-13 18:45:58

How's it all going now SummerSevern?

SummerSevern Sun 15-Sep-13 20:36:53

Mmm... Comfort milk sorted out the constipation (in spectacular style), but we're still waking up at 11 and 5 for a good old fart. So no closer to sttn, I'm afraid. She's got 3 days left of being 8 weeks so it could still happen!
How's your lo sleeping?

Shatteredmamma1 Mon 16-Sep-13 06:32:00

Bless her. He does the occasional eight
hour stretch just to tease me but otherwise
is up 1-2x a night . Now on 3 meals which
I think has helped a little bit. But seriously
He's 6 months old - where is the STTN??!

Fazerina Mon 16-Sep-13 09:30:15

Don't mean to be a partypooper here, but DS is 2.4yo and has never slept through grin..

SummerSevern Mon 16-Sep-13 09:39:43

You guys must be racking up some serious karma. At some point in the future, your DS's are going to win the lottery and buy you a speedboat.
Now, personally, I'd take the sleep. smile

DD is 7 weeks and won't go longer than 3 hours. I'm getting quite stabby about various 'oh dcx went 10 hours last night' posts. I am surviving and 'happy' to know she's secure and loved but FML what I'd do for even a 5 hour stretch!
I'm AP all the way but I'm wavering and thinking of reading the Baby Whisperer confused

SummerSevern Mon 16-Sep-13 20:37:50

I'll join you with the stabby feelings, Pudding!
Someone bought us The No Cry Sleep Solution, but it basically says you can't do anything before 4 months. All the things you can do, we're already doing: no eye contact, darkened room, etc.
I'll just keep deluding myself. Tonight is the night!

PuddingAndHotMilk Mon 16-Sep-13 22:46:59

Fx Summer thanks

SummerSevern Tue 17-Sep-13 02:27:57

Ok, so tonight is definitely NOT the night.

Shatteredmamma1 Tue 17-Sep-13 07:59:10

Fazerina that is definitely party pooper
Territory!!
It'll happen (I keep telling myself...) if you
Are ff try the hungry baby formula maybe?
DS was better last night but he is over 6m
- I was totally (naively ) expecting lots more
Sleep earlier than this!!
