Is my 11 week old sleeping too much?

Hello, My DD#1 is 11 weeks old and I am worried that she is sleeping too much.

My DD#1 seems to spend a lot of the day asleep. She always has done - I had to wake her up to feed her when she was newborn - but I figured she'd be awake a bit more by now and I'm worried something isn't right.

Her normal rhythm is to nap between 8.30-10am, then to nap from 11am until 1.30pm. In the afternoon she might take another 45 min nap around 3.30pm, then she sleeps from 6-8pm when we wake her up for a bath, cuddle with Dad and final feed, then she sleeps 9pm-3.30/4am, and 4.30-7am. I haven't tried to put her on a routine or schedule, this is what she wants to do.

When she is awake she is generally smiley and alert, although she does seem to tire of activities like play gym / toys / stimulation quite quickly and if she's been awake for more than two hours she is definitely overtired and gets cranky. I'm not sure that she's asleep for the whole time of her naps - a few times i have popped into the bedroom to get something and she's been lying in the Moses Basket awake looking around or sucking her thumb - but because she's quite content and not made a noise or cried I haven't heard her on the monitor. So I think she does stir and wake up sometimes, and then goes back to sleep.

Does this sound ok or might there be an underlying issue that is making her sleepy? She seems to sleep a lot more than my friends's babies - is she just a sleepy baby? I am going to see the HV on Tuesday so will mention it but I'm guessing she will laugh at me...

Sounds fine to me. As long as she is continuing to eat well and gain weight etc, I wouldn't worry. I have a 'sleepy' baby too. My 7 month old sleeps 13 hours straight at night, and needs 3-4 hours during the day!!

She sounds absolutely fineSmile

My DD was like yours. She didn't gain weight for over 6 weeks as she slept so much!

I just went with the flow and enjoyed the good night's sleep's I got!

13 years on she is fit and healthy and has never had any problems with sleeping or eatingSmile

Sounds fine to me too and v similar to what my LO does (or did before 4 month growth spurt/sleep regression but that's a whole other thread).

Enjoy :)

I'm currently 39 weeks with my second and I'm hoping, praying and wishing for this pattern rather than mr awake baby that was ds1! If gaining weight, wet and dirty nappies she sounds fine, like I was as a baby according to my Mum. Then my incredibly non sleeping sister arrived...Wink

My DD was similar, she formed her own daytime routine which was wake at 730, nap between 830-11, wake between 11-1 & sleep from 1-4, bed at 7. Then she slept all night. I was so worried i kept a sleep diary to check if she was sleeping too much. HV assured me i was just lucky!
