Sleep

8 weeks old - how many naps a day?

My little girl sleeps well at night and asks for 2-3 feeds after midnight.
My worry is that she does not have proper naps and tends to be really tired by 4pm, although I can put her in her bed and she might sleep for 20 minutes.
I've tried to give her 4 naps a day and doing the EASY routine (with flexible hours) from Tracey Hogg but the fact I go out and about during the day Gemma does not have a routine. alhtough I do keep the easy routine and it works well.

  1. how many naps a day a baby of 8-9 weeks old should have
  2. how long should she be awake? is 1h30mins sounds ok? or does it depend on the baby

1hr 30 sounds fine Cjay, shes doing great if you have her content at night. naps in the day will decrease as they get bigger,{to about 3hrs max with 12/13 hrs at night,} some sooner than others, the EASY pattern will be a big help in sussing if shes tired or not.
i didnt really try to set the day naps sorted til about 12wks with both mine.
2/3 feeds after midnight is fine too.
getting her use to the bed/cot is good from the start IMO, longterm that will make napping easier for you.

When my DD was 8 weeks old she couldn't stay awake for longer than 1.5 hours at a time ...
That sounds fine to me ...
I don't think that at that age you can say how many naps they need ... although Gina Ford would disagree. DS was pretty much in a 3 naps a day routine at that age but DD would have maybe 4 or 5 at that age (many in the buggy or car due to going out often for Kindergarten drop offs/pick ups/DS' swimming lessons/soccer practice etc)
