Ski and snowboarding

4 months pregnant - cross country or snowshoe?

We're going skiing in 3 weeks (on holiday booked way before I was pregnant). I'll be four and a half months. I've ruled out downhill skiing - have done red runs before but even idea of sticking to nursery slopes makes me worry about people crashing into me.

I don't want to spend the week sitting in a cafe drinking hot chocolate, and am really looking forward to the fresh air and exercise. I've never done cross country skiing before, but am pretty fit - did a marathon last year - so would this be ok? Or do I stick to snowshoeing? Advice please! Thanks

I wouldnt risk it.

A woman here was out cross country skiing when she had a run in, she was also 4 months pregnant at the time. She spent the rest of her pregnancy in hospital. But the baby was fine. There are hills, and possibility to fall, crash with other skier, or a tree, also when cross country skiing.

Most resorts have prepared & mapped winter walking paths.

I'd stick to snow shoeing or walking. I'd be worrying about other people crashing into me.

Thanks everyone - I think I'll try snowshoeing or walking. Will ask at the resort if they can do a beginners langlaufing session.

I don't see why you couldn't try langlauf! Its not like you or any of the other langlaufers are going that fast, and a collision at those sorts of speeds isn't going to be nearly as bad as downhill. You probably don't want to learn to snowboard though!

I rode my scooter through central london until i was 8mths pregnant so I'm not adverse to low risks.

We'd all be walking around in those inflatable sumo wrestler suits if some people had their way...

Ok, that's good to know! I would really like to do it if I could. Thanks

Langlauf can be quite hard work, and actually sometimes people do go fast - we did some in Norway where we got up a fair old speed, some of the trails were downhill as well.

When I was PG I found that I just couldn't do as much exercise as normal, (lower aerobic capacity) and this was worse at altitude. I'd stick to the walking if I were you.

cross country does have some slopes and the possibility of some speed/snowplough activity. my S-i-L can't ski and found cross-country was too difficult because of this. so still be careful!
whatever you do, do the easy/beginner/gentle route. and what's wrong with hot chocolate and sitting around? that's what being pregnant is for!!

I skied at 5 1/2 months pregnant with my first. Was OK but I do admit I took it slowly and had lots of rests.

Have fun whatever you do
