ski jackets!

OK perhaps this should really be in products but I never look there and I wanted to catch the people who look in skiing...

Tell me about ski jackets.

• What features do you love and what's a waste of time?
  
• What brand / style / colour do you love or wish you'd gone for?
  
• Do you really get much more for your money buying e.g. Spyder over Trespass, or is the value all just in the label and the spidey web picture?

Jacket - waterproof , breathable , drawcords at waist/hip and/or snowskirt, adjustable cuffs, underarm zip vents. High neck which you can close fully. Long enough to cover hips and room to move arms freely without it riding up. Bulk does not equate to warmth.

To an extent you get what you pay for in terms of technical fabrics and cut but we have found the likes of Trespass and Dare2Be as good as more expensive brands for recreational use, even in poor weather.

Thanks Lizs, very handy. I've been looking at a Dare2Be one which seems to tick all the boxes but it's such good value compared to some of the fancy brands I was wondering what was missing.

Where does softshell come in, I can't quite work out if they're as well as or instead of the other type?

And out of interest, do you go for bright and snazzy or more sober?! Not sure which I'd get bored of more quickly...

I tend to go muted tones! Dont think I've never seen anyone ski in softshell, really it is more like a fleece but windproof and may be more suited to spring snow conditions.

Good advice from Lizs. Think layers rather than a big thick jacket. The temperatures can vary enormously, particularly if you're going in March or April.
