EmmaMumsnet (MNHQ) Thu 06-Feb-14 16:11:30

January is over so it might be time to poke your nose out and try something new.

Mumsnet Local was revamped last year and we have 180+ local sites across the UK. We aim to have up-to-date info on what's happening where you are, like lots of great ideas for activities to amuse the kids in Half Term. Please do have a look and sign-up to your local site. Where we already have Local Editors, we are now sending out monthly newsletters full of great suggestions of things to do, exclusive local offers for Mumsnetters and lots else besides.

We need your help to make this as good as it can be thanks cake

Please pop over and upload a listing, review a local service or have a chat to folks in your local area. Or, if you have more time and are looking to make a little money, you could take on a local site as a Mumsnet Local Editor?

Mumsnet Local Editors manage their Mumsnet Local site, keeping it clean, tidy and up-to-date. They write newsletters and work with local ambassadors (voluntary) to hold meet-ups locally.

Local Editors can make money by contacting businesses local to them and asking them to advertise on their local sites. If you become a Local Editor, you will keep the revenue from the local advertising and offers that you book.

If this sounds of interest to you, then please do send us an email on local@mumsnet.com with 'interested in becoming a Local Editor' in the subject field. It helps if you tell us a bit about yourself in the email.

Local is still in its infancy but it's growing all of the time: In the last year we have seen some local editors who have been working hard to build local contacts and communities really starting to see dividends, with several seeing monthly earnings topping £1,000. It is slow and steady but the potential is great for the right people.

We very much look forward to hearing from you if you are interested or have any questions.

Happy New Year

MNHQ

PS, we are still processing emails from the last recruitment thread, as we've been spring cleaning our set-up process, so don't worry, you will hear from us in the next few days. grin

What about Nottingham/Ashfield?

What about Nottingham/Ashfield?

Nottingham already has a Local Editor who's just started recently, but Nottinghamshire is still free… Do send us an email if you're interested.

What sort of time commitment does it require?

I could do with some extra £ and something to put on my CV confused but only have a few hours where dd is at playgroup.

To make a real go of it, we have found that two days per week works well, particularly to start with, when LEs are setting everything up. Of course, hours are completely flexible across the week and up to the individual editor.

Arion Fri 07-Feb-14 17:07:31

When you say that the editors keep the local site tidy, do you need to know how to write HTML? Contacting local businesses is one thing, I've never written any web pages so not sure how much technical knowledge I'd need?

MrsShrek3 Fri 07-Feb-14 18:35:00

I would really love to see a full list of areas - some seem quite specific and others downright bizarre. and fwiw the town I live in is not on any list I've ever seen, despite there being a good number of mners here. Hence I would like to see how areas are divided and where boundaries are.
TIA

Hi Mrs B
We have someone potentially interested in Herefordshire, but if you email us, we'll be in touch if they decide against.

They all fall in Surrey, which is already managed by a Local Editor

I am beginning to think you hate me and don't want me! grin sad

Have you thought about having any Local Editors for Ireland? There are rather a lot of us over here and a Dublin editor at least would be very useful (and I would be interested...;) )

LEKent Sat 08-Feb-14 13:30:46

Hi Arion

I'm the Kent Local Ed, and you don't need to know any programming language to look after the sites - so it's really straightforward!

We are planning to get some up for the Republic of Ireland including Dublin, so we're working on it!

hootloop Mon 10-Feb-14 13:36:09

I could potentially be interested but but have several reservations.
This is a voluntary position with the possibility of keeping revenue, I am unsure what the tax implications of this are for a SAHM on tax credits.
Would it be selling advertising space? is there a fee structure provided? approaching local businesses is fine but how much leeway to make deals do local eds have?
Would it involve moderating local talk or is that still done by HQ?

DiscoBiscuits Mon 10-Feb-14 15:38:12

Do you have someone for Wrexham?

LESuffolk Mon 10-Feb-14 15:38:53

We have complete leeway to sell or give away local advertising.

You are self employed so would need to take advice regarding whether that makes financial sense for you and your family.

I would say that two days a week would make it quite hard to manage.

The thing is, a lot of what we do is social media based and Twitter is an exceptionally good vehicle for this. If you are not able to respond to tweets and emails on a bi daily basis you are going to be severely disadvantaged. Another thing to consider is that Twitter gets busy in the evenings and a lot of my networking is done after 8:30 pm. If you don't want to be monitoring Twitter at night, again you may lose out.

You do get press access to review seats at theatres/entertainment venues if you ask and other freebies like that. I have just been offered a short break at a new Glamping site in return for some PR.

You have to be prepared to wear your fingerprints off listing hundreds of local events/businesses as nobody will take your site seriously if it is half empty. Even if the viewing figures are quite low, an impression of busy-ness goes far. I spent the first couple of months building relationships by publicising for free and entering listings. I now have taken on Norfolk too but if you compare Mumsnet Suffolk with my newer site Mumsnet Norfolk you can see the effects of a few months work!

You'll also have to do Facebook - here are my sites - Suffolk and Norfolk and whilst you don't have to add more than a few posts per week, I have driven up traffic by posting on Suffolk a lot more.

I enjoy it- I have learned so much about my local region, have had some press interviews and have been approached by BBC Look East as a commentator (which I don't want to do shock) should they need a local parenting and local family events commentator so you can gain valuable experience. I've also gained work writing editorial and copy for other businesses. So if you want to springboard into PR, Editing, Copywriting, social media management then it is an ideal thing to have on your CV.

Try it out- it can't hurt!

lisanic77 Mon 10-Feb-14 15:49:21

mylamouse Mon 10-Feb-14 17:26:11

Would love to help if you can add cornwall on there

Bicnod Mon 10-Feb-14 18:38:23

Was just about to say the same thing...

I'd be interested in being a local editor for Winchester.

Any plans to add it to the list?

LESuffolk Mon 10-Feb-14 19:02:45

If a town / county isn't on the list, it'll be because its been taken.

I hope somebody takes Norwich and Ipswich - it'll be nice to have another Suffolk or Norfolk Editor to work with.

Charliefarlie32 Tue 11-Feb-14 08:36:08

Hello there,
I am based on the Isle of Wight, and only the other day commented to family how disappointed I was in the lack of discussion on the mumsnet site for my local area.
I had recently registered and was looking for ideas and groups I could join. Local activities to keep a toddler entertained! But couldn't find any local activities listed.

I would love to take the opportunity to update this site, as i noticed that others felt the same about the lack of use. I already manage a website, and am undertaking further study and training in the area of social media marketing.
I have sent an email to the local mumsnet address.

RebeccaMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 11-Feb-14 08:52:11

Hi all,

Many thanks for the response.
We are wading through the mails and will get back to you asap.

If your local area is not on the list then it is probably taken, do feel free to send us a mail about it is you are interested, there are Local Ambassador voluntary roles available in many areas too.

We have had masses of emails, which is brilliant – keep them coming, and thanks all. It might mean we take a few days to get back to you, but we're on it and going through them in order.

Will we be told when the norwich local page is set up?

We are following the norfolk one and lesuffolk who is running it is lovley, we aremaking sure to tweet and share the page amd send send relevant links smile

LESuffolk Thu 13-Feb-14 11:43:54

Why thank you 5madthings

I have press review tickets for Noriwch dwellers. Do you want to go see 'Happy Days' and review it for me?

I hope the new Norwich LE will be cool with my doing that but I set it up before she/he was in post.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt Thu 13-Feb-14 12:21:20

LESuffolk is there a local site for Bury St Edmunds? There never used to be which I thought was always a missed opportunity.

PurplePidjin Thu 13-Feb-14 12:50:14

Please may we have something covering the vast expanse between Bournemouth and Southampton? I'm technically Southampton according to you but it's 20+ miles away!If so, i'd be happy to have a go at being editor for eg Mumsnet New Forest grin

Jofemum Thu 13-Feb-14 13:00:48

Hi - I am in Somerset and don't see us listed. As a writer/editor am very interested. Please let me know if you would like more from us Somerset/Exmoor/N.Devon mums!!

LESuffolk Thu 13-Feb-14 13:02:23

No there isn't but I am based there and it is very well represented on Suffolk. To be honest the towns / county sites being separate means the lines get blurred. I have Ipswich listings for example on Suffolk because people expect them to be there and the same for Norwich/Norfolk. I also work with Ipswich theatres re press and reviewing so will have to work something out with the new Ipswich LE so she can benefit from that too.

Bury isn't big enough to sustain revenue for one Editor in my opinion and advertisers will likely choose to be on the Suffolk site rather than a smaller Bury one. It is a smallish town really although rich in history and a lovely place to visit.

MumaLeary Thu 13-Feb-14 13:05:33

Would you include Wirral in Cheshire? I'd like more info if possible

HugAndRoll Thu 13-Feb-14 13:07:28

Hi, does anyone look after Cardiff? I was last on there a few weeks ago and it was looking very bare. I'd be interested in finding out more information if there are any positions available.

I've had to give up work due to having two children with special needs but something flexible like this would be a possibility.

deekay Thu 13-Feb-14 13:11:31

hello, is Milton Keynes available please? If take,n can you have more than one editor for the area?

Also are Luton and Northampton still available?

thanks

Hi, are there any areas in North or West Yorkshire that need a local Editor?

Thanks :-)

Charliefarlie32 Thu 13-Feb-14 13:47:26

I also wanted to be considered for the Isle of Wight, but realised via facebook that some one else had already applied. It would be useful to know how people are selected. Is it a case of selection on the basis of the first person that applies? It would be nice to know that all applicants who have shown interest for a particular area have been considered for the role!

LocalEditorWestSussex Thu 13-Feb-14 13:53:18

I'm waving a flag for Local Ambassadors in Merton too - there are some seriously good places for meet-ups locally - one with a cinema in the basement (showing children-friendly films during daylight hours and at the weekends) to lose entertain the DCs--!!!

Please email me: merton@mumsnetlocal.com.

Hi - I emailed about 5 days ago and haven't heard back. You had asked me to email when I first responded on here.

Hi Sunbeam,

Apologies, we are getting through the mails as quickly as we can, we have had tonnes to get through but you should hear back in the next couple of days.

Hi, I've just spotted that there is a dearth of happenings in East Renfrewshire.

I'm not 100% on what I'd have to do and I don't have massive amounts of spare time, but I figure if I tell Dp in actually doing something for MN it'll justify me spending as much time here wink

Can you give me the skinny on what's required and I'll have a bash at it?

Hi, are you looking for an editor in the Selby area? I have emailed regarding arranging meetups and being an LA.

DP76 Mon 24-Feb-14 20:15:31

Hi - do you need anyone for Herts, or any extra help for that area, I'm West Herts! Thanks.

feathermucker Tue 04-Mar-14 21:42:02

South Devon? grin

MrsHowl Tue 11-Mar-14 10:43:37

Hi Emma,
I would be really interested in becoming local editor for Warrington. There is so much going on around here that isn't on your site. I sent you a PM a few weeks ago. Are you still looking for someone in my area? Thanks Kerry

CakeyCakeyCakey Wed 30-Apr-14 14:51:20

I'd be interested in rotherham, my only concern would be that I am a Carer for my mil and am claiming carers allowance so I can only officially work a few hours a week. Would it be likely to affect that at all? I have spare time and ds starts nursery soon.
