I can't post on threads

AbsDuCroissant Mon 04-Nov-13 16:24:19

I'm using Microsoft Internet explorer, and I can see the box and type in it, but when I try to preview or post, nothing happens.

How can this be fixed?

MikeLitoris Mon 04-Nov-13 16:27:14

Are you sure you havent been banned? grin

AbsDuCroissant Mon 04-Nov-13 16:31:43

I was worried about that. But then mnhq wouldn't ban me, I'm so nice! And lovely! And can obviously still post from my phone.

And they'd tell me if I was banned right? confused

AbsDuCroissant Mon 04-Nov-13 16:50:28

Please don't tell me I'm banned and I didn't even get the email. And for no reason, I mean, I know I whined a lot on the film thread but that's no reason

MikeLitoris Mon 04-Nov-13 16:52:22

How are posting this?

Is this an elaborate ruse to get someone to talk to you?

attention seeker

AbsDuCroissant Mon 04-Nov-13 16:54:43

I'm posting from my phone. Normally I post from a PC

RebeccaMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 04-Nov-13 17:01:44

You most certainly haven't - Tech are aware of this and are looking into it at the moment.

Apologies all

AbsDuCroissant Mon 04-Nov-13 17:11:16

Thanks Rebecca. I was about to cry, and maybe cave and send over a bottle of gin as a peace offering bribe

RebeccaMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 04-Nov-13 17:14:12

Well in that case lies through my teeth Yy, you have been banned wink grin

2rebecca Mon 04-Nov-13 20:20:41

I had to switch to firefox boohiss

Viviennemary Mon 04-Nov-13 21:24:01

I tried to post to say I couldn't post but of course it didn't work. I've gone on Firefox for this to see if it works.

RebeccaMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 05-Nov-13 08:46:53

Hi all,

Were you using Internet Explorer when it wasn't working?

Viviennemary Tue 05-Nov-13 10:48:46

I'm on Internet Explorer but it's an older version. I think we'll have to upgrade our computer soon. I still couldn't post this morning so went on Firefox to do this post.

AbsDuCroissant Tue 05-Nov-13 12:58:39

I still can't post using ie, so having to use my phone. It's doing my head in.

I'm on firefox now, chrome also ok but IE not working. Jolly annoying! (and yes I briefly though I'd been banned but not told)

Yiska Tue 05-Nov-13 16:36:07

IE8 seems to be working for me <helpful>

CanadianJohn Tue 05-Nov-13 17:19:41

I received an email from MNHQ, apparently they no longer support Windoze 7, so you have to either upgrade or change browser.

Apparently MNHQ don't realise that no new is good new (as Microsoft remind us with every "upgrade".

2rebecca Tue 05-Nov-13 22:04:54

I still can't post in internet explorer 9

2rebecca Tue 05-Nov-13 22:05:19

am windows vista

Mellowandfruitful Tue 05-Nov-13 22:07:18

Me too! Am having to post on another device <mysterious> So it's a Windows update that's needed? Or a broader tech issue?

I also thought I'd been banned to start with, till I tried posting via phone and saw that still worked.

CanadianJohn Wed 06-Nov-13 04:38:51

If I understand it correctly, MN does not support Windoze 7 with Internet Explorer. So, If you don't want to switch to Windoze 8, you have to switch browser (I've switched to Firefox).

I gather that Windoze 8 with IE is okay, but Windoze 7 with IE is not. I presume earlier versions of Windoze are also not supported.

Clear as mud?

KateSMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 06-Nov-13 10:53:40

Hullo all,

Thanks for all your patience. We realise that this must be vair annoying. Tech haven't been able to replicate the problem yet, so as an interim solution, we'd suggest using an alternative browser, such as Chrome or Firefox.

We have a special mission from Tech, should you chose to accept it, that could help us figure out what's happening in IE.

When you open IE, in the bar below the address bar, there's a Tools tab. Click this, and then go down to F12 developer tools (or you could hit F12, as I've just figured out)

This will bring up a box at the bottom of your screen. Choose the "Console" tab. Then, when you next try to post on Mumsnet and it's not letting you, could you take a screen shot of what's happen in the console box at the bottom of the screen, and send it to contactus@mumsnet.com? The have a brew

Have attached some pics to hopefully make this a bit clearer. Do keep us updated on what's happening, and we'll try to get this sorted asap flowers

KateSMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 06-Nov-13 14:11:06

Aha! Thanks to your diligent screenshottage (new verb), Tech think they've cracked it.

If you go into the Developer box, as explained above, in the tool bar there'll be a box that says "Browser mode" - this need to be set to IE9.

This should allow you to post again - could you have a bash at this and let us know how you get on? Shout if you get stuck.

CanadianJohn Wed 06-Nov-13 14:17:50

Using Win 7, I went to developer tools, discovered I was in IE 10 compatibility mode, switched to IE 9, and... and... does that work?

It does!

KateSMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 06-Nov-13 15:48:23

Callooh Callay! Thanks for the update CanadianJohn!

Ok I checked mine and it was to IE9 compat view but IE9 was also available so I changed it to that and.......

it works!

Clever tech grin

ModreB Wed 06-Nov-13 18:14:14

Can I post?

Yes I Can grin

Cant post using firefox, but have managed to change over to chrome, and its ok on there.

Viviennemary Wed 06-Nov-13 19:02:36

Tried on Internet Explorer and it didn't work. Trying on Firefox now to see if this works.

changed to IE9 too.

'Tis magic!

Viviennemary Wed 06-Nov-13 20:23:45

I don't seem to have a tools on my Internet Explorer. So it's Firefox for the time being.

2rebecca Wed 06-Nov-13 21:39:57

2rebecca Wed 06-Nov-13 21:40:48

Interesting as my browser mode said it was in IE9 so I didn't think clicking on that would change anything but it did, thanks

wetaugust Wed 06-Nov-13 22:10:33

SlightlyDampWellies Wed 06-Nov-13 22:12:25

we can hear you wetaugust

Although I lost it again and had to reset.

CanadianJohn Thu 07-Nov-13 00:07:25

Hmmm.. browser reverted to IE10, just had to change it back to IE9. Velly strange.

wetaugust Thu 07-Nov-13 00:40:59

I just clicked on the 'compatibility view' icon on the right hand side of the address bar. (Looks like jagged torn paper or saw teeth).

That seems to have done the job (on IE9).

SlightlyDampWellies Thu 07-Nov-13 09:03:32

Yes I have to keep changing it back too.

trish5000 Thu 07-Nov-13 09:08:06

I am still using Firefox. I did get someone to try the test above for me, but it didnt seem to work.

AbsDuCroissant Thu 07-Nov-13 09:22:30

AbsDuCroissant Thu 07-Nov-13 09:22:42

Have I told you lately that I love you???

I have been exchanging emails with MN for days about this - no joy.

It would have been nice if they'd have pointed me in the direction of this thread yesterday!!

Still - happy happy happy happy to be back grin

I had to change IE9 compatability to plain IE9, thanks CanadianJohn xxx

Oh nice. I was worried my computer had a mn specific virus.

5Foot5 Thu 07-Nov-13 12:28:09

5Foot5 Thu 07-Nov-13 12:29:37

Oh now that is really strange. At first I thought I would have no luck because I am still on XP and my 'compatibility view' doesn't even have IE9 in it. It has IE7, IE8 and IE8 Compatibility.

IE8 Compatibility was selected so I changed it to IE8 and...

... ta dah!!

AbsDuCroissant Thu 07-Nov-13 14:43:05

Oh Chipping, if I could have posted I would have told you.

I thought it was work or something, being all "get off MN and do stuff" in a subtle way.

Mellowandfruitful Thu 07-Nov-13 16:35:35

Mellowandfruitful Thu 07-Nov-13 16:36:27

Yes! I have inexpertly clicked on the compatibility thingy and it's done the trick! Marvellous.

NewNameforNewTerm Thu 07-Nov-13 20:25:39

NewNameforNewTerm Thu 07-Nov-13 20:25:56

Yeah! Problem solved.

StrictlySazz Thu 07-Nov-13 21:01:26

Works for me too smile

ChippingInBatshitArse Thu 07-Nov-13 23:26:32

ABS starting this thread was brilliant - I just assumed as I couldn't post, I wouldn't be able to start a thread either!

The only problem is I have to keep doing the F12 thing hmm

MrsCocoa Thu 07-Nov-13 23:32:33

testing testing 123 testing

5Foot5 Fri 08-Nov-13 13:50:41

The only problem is I have to keep doing the F12 thing
Me too. Preferably before trying to post 'cos if you forget and try to post and then do the F12 thing you find you have lost all your words of wisdom!

CanadianJohn Fri 08-Nov-13 14:52:20

I have to keep doing the F12 thing... I can tell as soon as the main talk topics page loads... if the page doesn't load correctly, I have to F12-it.

Small price to pay for Mumsnet.

lookout Fri 08-Nov-13 16:00:57

Is mine working now?

lookout Fri 08-Nov-13 16:01:40

Yay! At last! I have spent all week trying to post on messages and so much of my wisdom has been lost due to not being able to send my messages and having to give up grin

Viviennemary Fri 08-Nov-13 17:48:21

I've had to go back to Firefox. And still having lots of problems. It's very very slow. I have to keep changing backwards and forwards.

lotsofcheese Fri 08-Nov-13 17:52:35

Bizarrely, I can't post on my local site (Edinburgh) but can on all other parts of the site shock

Guitargirl Fri 08-Nov-13 17:53:36

Guitargirl Fri 08-Nov-13 17:55:23

Woo hoo! Have changed from IE8 compatability to IE8 and it works again! <such a relief, I also thought work had decided to unofficially ban me!>

ChippingInLovesAutumn Sat 09-Nov-13 10:40:39

I'm still having to F12 frequently. I have changed to IE8 this time, I'll see how that goes.

5ft5 - I have been 'copying' any long posts before I try to send them!

lost - I know! I don't know how MN has coped without us??

NewNameforNewTerm Sat 09-Nov-13 12:14:44

Chipping I'm doing exactly the same. I have to reset F12 everytime I post and I, too, copy my posts before I hit post message, just in case I lose it all!

lisbapalea Mon 11-Nov-13 16:58:35

I am also still having this problem and have to F12 and switch to IE9 (not IE9 Compatability Mode) every time I want to post.

Is this a permanent thing?

ChippingInLovesAutumn Mon 11-Nov-13 23:10:43

I don't know - it would be nice if Tech wold come back and let us know!! I'm report this post smile

MrsCocoa Mon 11-Nov-13 23:17:26

I keep on having to redo the F12 thing too.

MistAllChuckingFrighty Mon 11-Nov-13 23:19:35

< pops head into thread >

<runs away screaming >

Viviennemary Tue 12-Nov-13 00:10:30

I've had to go on Firefox to post. It's a bit of a hassle so I just read mostly now.

KateSMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 12-Nov-13 12:38:18

Hurrah, glad it's all working(ish)!

Chipping - could've sworn we mailed you about this, but clearly we must not have - v sorry about that!

Not sure about that whole "resetting" thing, will see if Tech have any pearls of wisdom.

KateSMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 12-Nov-13 13:00:56

Right, have consulted with the mighty Tech and apparently you can get around it by disabling compatibility mode.

This handy article explains it far better than I could, so have a bash and shout if you're still stuck.

ChippingInLovesAutumn Tue 12-Nov-13 22:11:42

Hi Kate

No - no email (well, not until the one I got telling me you had updated here!), never mind smile

I'll go and have a go now and see how I get on smile

ChippingInLovesAutumn Tue 12-Nov-13 22:41:48

Right - well, I've done that - I'll report back tomorrow smile

Mine isn't working still. Lost yet another helpful post as I had to switch on tools to IP9. I don't have time or truthfully inclination to repost or read lengthy techie documents.

AbbyLou Thu 14-Nov-13 22:00:16

I pressed the compatibility icon and it has worked. Hurray!

ChippingInLovesAutumn Sat 16-Nov-13 07:39:24

veryconfused - it's not lengthy or techy smile It was easy to do and appears to have worked smile

Thanks Kate & Mighty Tech flowers

CrispyHedgehogFucker Sat 16-Nov-13 07:54:38

I've been having the same issue.. in Firefox though

CrispyHedgehogFucker Sat 16-Nov-13 07:54:50

oh, it works now grin

CanadianJohn Sat 16-Nov-13 18:28:50

Just to let MN know, IE is working fine for me now. Thanks.

SconeRhymesWithGone Sun 17-Nov-13 00:19:22

I have not been able to post in IE8 for days. I could until about a week ago. I had to switch to Firefox, but I much prefer IE. When I try to post, it says error on page.

MrsOsbourne Tue 19-Nov-13 16:42:49

Hopefully this will work !

MrsOsbourne Tue 19-Nov-13 16:43:13

I thought I had been banned blush

KateSycoraxMumsnet (MNHQ) Thu 21-Nov-13 10:36:00

So everyone sorted-ish?

DorisShutt Tue 03-Dec-13 08:13:38

I'm using this thread as I can't start a new thread at all.

I've emailed you at the contactus address, but wasn't sure which was quicker.

Anytime I click on start a new thread, it won't let me - it just redirects me to the infamous biscuit page.

I'm running Chrome (latest version) on a windows 7 PC, and I've also tested it on Mozilla Firefox and IE10.

I've also tried it on the mobile site on an iphone using Chrome and Safari.

Please help!

AmyMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 03-Dec-13 10:43:09

Hi everyone,

Sorry that it seemed to have gone wonky again. Tech think they've fixed it now - is anyone still having problems?
