just to tell those of you who are having problems posting and are using internet explorer version 8 and 9 that we think we've sorted it. Please do let us know if you're still having issues via or post on here (if you can).

ninilegsintheair Thu 12-Sep-13 14:02:36

Still not working for me. On windows 7, internet explorer 9.

AmberLeaf Thu 12-Sep-13 14:05:55

Im on Mozilla firefox and have an issue on my post button, it doesnt show as 'posting' it stays dark purple. can make multiple posts happen.

I did let you know on another thread yesterday.

Good work.

I'm on chrome and was having problems but it seems ok now smile

flowery Thu 12-Sep-13 16:40:21

Still not working. IE 10 as I said on the other thread.

JulieMumsnet (MNHQ) Thu 12-Sep-13 16:41:24

For those who are still having problems, are you using Javascript? If so, is it the current version?

flowery Thu 12-Sep-13 16:49:39

Um. Dunno. How do I check?

inneedofrain Thu 12-Sep-13 18:50:42

Ok, Julie now I´m confused!

Do you mean which edition of Java or Javascript becuase as I understand it JavaScript is a scripting language used on your machine. Java is a full language used on the web for server interaction.

It is possible for you to update Java on your, not JavaScript! But I could be wrong, could Tech Support clarify?

I´m still not able to post using Internet explorer 9.

inneedofrain Thu 12-Sep-13 18:52:22

Ok I have Version 6 Update 24 of Java which I am about to update to Version 7 Update 40. If it works I´ll let everyone know how to do it!

ninilegsintheair Thu 12-Sep-13 19:03:17

No idea but if it requires downloading something then I'm stuffed as I can't download anything on my work computer. FFS HQ, why mess with something that was working perfectly a few days ago!!

inneedofrain Thu 12-Sep-13 19:14:19

Ok, MNHQ i´ve updated Java to the latest version 7 update 40 and its not made a tiny bit of difference.

Tech are going to have to tell us what to do, as I HATE firefox with a passion and LOVE MN!

commuterbelt Thu 12-Sep-13 19:15:40

me! seems ok on firefox but nowt happening on ie latest java already installed

Havea0 Thu 12-Sep-13 20:11:54

I am on windows xp and internet explorer 8. I still have a large left margin. Not sure if the spaces thing has been resolved, dont think it has. Havent had a problem this afternoon with the post message button.

5Foot5 Thu 12-Sep-13 20:56:31

My work computer is also windows xp and IE 8 and I still couldn't post last time I tried. JavaScript is not disabled.

FFS HQ, why mess with something that was working perfectly a few days ago!!

BlackeyedSusan Thu 12-Sep-13 22:04:34

the triple post thing seems to have stopped now.

usualsuspect Thu 12-Sep-13 22:08:50

I've seen loads of multiple posts today.

I just keep getting 'please wait' on the post message button and then nothing happens.

I'm on a kindle.

Tech (MNHQ) Thu 12-Sep-13 22:23:29

Hi, inneedofrain, the version of java you are using doesn't make any difference. Sorry for the confusion.

If you can't post, what happens? Does nothing happen? When the pages come up are you getting a little warning triangle in the bottom left of your browser window by any chance - either when the page first displays or when you click post message. If you do, could you click it and it should show you an error message. It would be useful to us to know what that says.

Sorry this is a pain for people. Unfortunately when we try it out in the office on IE 8 9 and 10 it's fine. So we need to find out if possible what the error that's happening on your machine is.

Thanks a lot.

Tech (MNHQ) Thu 12-Sep-13 22:32:25

we just made a minor change to something. Can someone who's been having problems check if it's made any difference? Thanks everso...

ShamTech (MNHQ) Thu 12-Sep-13 22:32:56

Just to clarify you don't need Java installed at all for Mumsnet. You just need Javascript enabled on your browser. To check if yours is enabled you can visit

If you are still having problems please do let us know via contactus@ and help us out with as much detail as possible about your exact problem and we will do our utmost to resolve it.

It's all our fault (Tech) I know but sometimes we have to make changes in preparation for new goodies that are coming.

inneedofrain Thu 12-Sep-13 22:45:16

Text I'm sorry I can't check at the moment as I'm on a tablet

I'll check in the morning and see if its working

Thanks for all your work

Slight issue on chrome - not on posting though so started a new thread as it a different and non urgent issue. smile

It works on my home computer which is Windows Vista javascript enabled on Firefox but still not on Windows explorer 9 which is what I prefer to use as my husband uses Firefox and if I use explorer we can keep 2 passwords for stuff like facebook set.
Post button does nothing on explorer.

commuterbelt Fri 13-Sep-13 07:57:15

have javascipt enabled still no joy on ie

commuterbelt Fri 13-Sep-13 07:59:56

when i post 'post message' nothing at all happens, no warning signs, nothing. the only thing that happens is that the 'post message box' has a dotted border then nothing :S

inneedofrain Fri 13-Sep-13 08:26:51

I´m the same as Commuterbelt when i post 'post message' nothing at all happens, no warning signs, nothing. the only thing that happens is that the 'post message box' has a dotted border then nothing :S

Two other observations, don´t know if they make a difference. On internet Explore the message box, preview message and post message buttons are all rectangular with sharp 90degree corners, On Firefox they are all rounded corners.

All the above boxes on Internet Explorer are also Larger, and the font in Preview and Post boxes is smaller.

On internet explorer I am also missing the Mumsnet Insight Box, Mumsnet Latest Box, and Blog of the day from the left hand coloum!

Havea0 Fri 13-Sep-13 08:38:26

The only problem I seem ot be left with is the large left hand margin. Thanks

ninilegsintheair Fri 13-Sep-13 08:47:35

Like commuterbelt nothing happens for me when I click post message. Although ive noticed the post and preview buttons have a weird white border underneath and to the left (within the button) that wasnt there before. IYSWIM.

Otherwise the site looks normal - can see the blog, latest and insight sections no problem.

flowery Fri 13-Sep-13 08:55:09

Still not working for me either. V annoying.

RowanMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 13-Sep-13 09:30:14

Thanks folks - we'll keep on trying to find the problem

Do please let us know (if you can, either here or via as much detail as you can about what is and isn't happening

TheSmallPrint Fri 13-Sep-13 09:39:57

Still not working I'm on IE no idea what version but PC is 3 years old.

TheSmallPrint Fri 13-Sep-13 09:40:55

The font is different too.

ShamTech (MNHQ) Fri 13-Sep-13 10:07:10

Hi all. Thank you for all the feedback. The majority of users are posting without any issues, but for those of you who are still having problems and have IE9 or later and are willing to assist us, please:

1. hit F12 which displays the Developer tools in IE (or select Developer Tools from the menu)
2. Click on the Console tab
3. Make an attempt to post on Mumsnet
4. Send us a screenshot or copy/paste whatever appears in the Console tab. Email it to

Thanks for delving into Tech world temporarily to help us out.

ShamTech (MNHQ) Fri 13-Sep-13 13:10:15

Thanks so much for getting down and geeky with us for this.

ninilegsintheair Fri 13-Sep-13 13:19:40

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

ninilegsintheair Fri 13-Sep-13 13:20:12

Hooray! grin

ninilegsintheair Fri 13-Sep-13 13:22:04

Thanks ShamTech, did you find out what was causing it? Now no more messing around with the site <waggles finger>.

If it helps, the weird white border at the bottom of the post and preview buttons has now gone. Odd indeed.

itsonlysubterfuge Fri 13-Sep-13 13:27:33

Test to see if I'm having problems!

TheSmallPrint Fri 13-Sep-13 13:28:59

TheSmallPrint Fri 13-Sep-13 13:30:04

Woohooo!!!! grin

Obviously I take all the credit for the fix what with me being the one to start a thread and all. grin

ShamTech (MNHQ) Fri 13-Sep-13 13:33:12

Thanks ninilegsintheair. Yes we did find a couple of unrelated problems on the page that were causing IE to have a seizure, thereby preventing you from posting. We applied CPR and all should be better now.

TheSmallPrint yes without the valiant OP'r we would be nowhere. Thank you.

TheSmallPrint Fri 13-Sep-13 13:53:19

grin I suppose some small credit should go to Tech too.

inneedofrain Fri 13-Sep-13 14:53:59

Three cheers for tech (if this works)
have a well earned brew or wine and a piece of cake

inneedofrain Fri 13-Sep-13 14:57:21

Yeah, I love tech support!!!!! No more firefox.

Tech you must have seen this??

True story, All my tech guys had this one the wall!

"Ridge Hall computer assistance; may I help you?"

"Yes, well, I'm having trouble with WordPerfect."

"What sort of trouble?"

"Well, I was just typing along, and all of a sudden the words went away."

"Went away?"

"They disappeared."

"Hmm. So what does your screen look like now?"

"It's blank; it won't accept anything when I type."

"Are you still in WordPerfect, or did you get out?"

"How do I tell?"

"Can you see the C: prompt on the screen?"

"What's a sea-prompt?"

"Never mind, can you move your cursor around the screen?"

"There isn't any cursor: I told you, it won't accept anything"

"Does your monitor have a power indicator?"

"What's a monitor?"

"It's the thing with the screen on it that looks like a TV. Does it have a little light that tells you when it's on?"

"I don't know."

"Well, then look on the back of the monitor and find where the power cord goes into it. Can you see that?"

"Yes, I think so."

"Great. Follow the cord to the plug, and tell me if it's plugged into the wall."

"Yes, it is."

"When you were behind the monitor, did you notice that there were two cables plugged into the back of it, not just one?"

"Well, there are. I need you to look back there again and find the other cable."

"Okay, here it is."

"Follow it for me, and tell me if it's plugged securely into the back of your computer."

"I can't reach."

"Uh huh. Well, can you see if it is?"

"Even if you maybe put your knee on something and lean way over?"

"Oh, it's not because I don't have the right angle-it's because it's dark."

"Yes, -the office light is off, and the only light I have is coming in from the window."

"Well, turn on the office light then."

"I can't."

"No? Why not?"

"Because there's a power failure."

"A power... A power failure? Aha, Okay, we've got it licked now. Do you still have the boxes and manuals and packing stuff your computer came in?"

"Well, yes, I keep them in the closet."

"Good. Go get them, and unplug your system and pack it up just like it was when you got it. Then take it back to the store you bought it from."

"Really. Is it that bad?"

"Yes, I'm afraid it is."

"Well, all right then, I suppose. What do I tell them?"

"Tell them you're too fucking stupid to own a computer."

Tee2072 Sun 15-Sep-13 16:30:30

Hate to be the bearer of bad news...but I keep not being able to post from Chrome. Win 7. I get a never ending wait symbol and so I try refreshing and the site goes no where and the post and preview buttons grey out.

TheSmallPrint Mon 16-Sep-13 10:24:00

Tee that's odd as Chrome was the only place I could post from! confused

RowanMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 18-Sep-13 09:16:37

Hello - are you still having problems Tee?

HawthornLantern Wed 18-Sep-13 16:25:36

Not sure if this is part of the same issue, or something different, but today and yesterday I am getting a lot of pop up messages "Please type a message first" when I open a thread. All I have to do is click "ok" and it is happy. It doesn't seem to be stopping me doing anything and I've successfully posted a message. But it's odd!

I'm on Firefox (version 23) - currently also having problems with Java in case that is relevant.

Tech (MNHQ) Wed 18-Sep-13 19:36:43

Hi HL, That's weird. Does it happen as soon as you open the thread to read it, or only after you do something else? Does is happen consistently on any particular thread, or does it appear to be random? If there is a thread / set of threads it happens on consistently, can you tell us which one(s)?

Sorry for all the questions but the answers should help us track down what's causing it. Thanks very much.

anchovies Wed 18-Sep-13 19:38:26

Also getting the occassional please type a message first pop up too. I'm using chrome.

EduCated Wed 18-Sep-13 22:47:56

I've been getting the infinite wait circle too. Using Safari on iPad. If I refresh, the post has gone through, but the page isn't refreshing by itself.

HawthornLantern Thu 19-Sep-13 14:29:07

Sorry for delay in replying, Tech. It seems to occur completely randomly. It's been various threads (but not consistently the same thread), various topics.... I can't see a pattern.

It usually pops up when I open a thread, but I first saw it when trying to hide a thread (I first thought MN had changed so you were now being required to comment on a thread you wanted to hide). Also it came up after I posted my message on this thread yesterday. So really - no rhyme or reason that I can identify.

But - at home (ahem, not at home when this happens) - I'm on Mac using Safari and haven't had the pop-up.

AGnu Fri 20-Sep-13 02:21:49

I'm having problems too! Just this evening it seems to be posting when I try to preview & again when I press 'post' so I'm double-posting all over the place. It's annoying! <sulk>

Also, my last post (which posted when I previewed but I got wise to it so didn't press 'post') is showing up on the Hello Louise thread but the thread isn't in my TIO! confused

AGnu Fri 20-Sep-13 02:23:21

See? See?! It did it again! & proved that I really do need my 'preview' button!

HawthornLantern Fri 20-Sep-13 05:41:50

New development - now getting the message at home with the Mac/Safari combination (in this case when opening a thread in AIBU and opening this thread here too)

ChinaCupsandSaucers Fri 20-Sep-13 08:25:43

AGnu I'm double posting too - from IPhone 4 iOS 6.1.3

Tech (MNHQ) Fri 20-Sep-13 15:31:03

Hi AGnu, sorry about that. There was a problem where preview could in some circumstances post. It shouldn't happen again. Do you want to try again to double check?

ChinaCupsandSaucers Fri 20-Sep-13 15:41:56

Testing, testing - Am I double posting?

Tech (MNHQ) Fri 20-Sep-13 16:04:30

Nay nay nay.

AGnu Fri 20-Sep-13 16:08:18

Seems to have resolved now. Thanks! flowers
