Do you want to run a Mumsnet Local site?

EmmaMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 04-Sep-13 11:19:56

Do you need a new packet of biscuits project to perk up Autumn and beyond?

Mumsnet Local is expanding all the time and we are looking for new Local Editors. Our current team of brilliant and dedicated Local Editors make sure their site is full of relevant listings, encouraging local Mumsnetters and businesses to post listings and reviews on the site and filling the gaps, so it's a useful community hub for local parents.

They also oversee Local Ambassadors, who are busy organising meet-ups all over the country, as well as encouraging community links locally. What Local Editors can't do is see anyone's private Mumsnet membership details or posting history (sorry, only the Community team are allowed in there).

We don't expect Local Editors to do all this for free; Local Editors get revenue from Local advertising and offers.

We know we're not quite there with Local yet, but we're moving along, and we're on the brink of launching some whizzy new stuff that Tech's been putting together in a bunker all summer.

We've pasted a list of the sites needing Local Editors below so if you're interested in finding out more please email local@mumsnet.com with 'interested in becoming a Local Editor' in the subject field.

Some of the sites are still a bit empty, so take a look around Kent to see what a site looks like when it's populated with meet-ups, listings, Local Talk, Offers, etc:

Ideally you would have had some experience in a media, advertising sales or organisational role and be able to spell, but bags of enthusiasm and strong community links can go a long way to making a local site a success.

I should have also said, please state which area you're interested in when you send the email!

janx Wed 04-Sep-13 12:35:45

I would be interested but can't see Stoke Newington so guess you are sorted for there

AnneEyhtMeyer Wed 04-Sep-13 12:49:15

Hmmm... this thread has just prompted me to check out my local site.

Despite supposedly being "active" there is hardly anything there. According to MN local, despite living in a largish city there are no children's centres, no private schools, only one soft play and one park and no local attractions. hmm

Not exactly inspiring is it? I think MN is flogging a dead horse with this one.

Hi Janx, Stoke Newington comes within the Hackney site and yes, we've got someone there at the moment.

I'd love to do something like this, I think I'll email and try my luck. smile

Erm, there is no flogging of any sort AnneEyhtMeyer wink grin - Local is in its infancy but growing all of the time.

It may be that your area doesn't have an Editor as yet or that folks haven't uploaded the listings for those specifics, please do feel free to add any, it's a huge team effort and it would be great if you'd add local-to-you info in.

AnneEyhtMeyer Wed 04-Sep-13 13:43:50

There is an editor, if that is the person whose posts are coloured in the local threads.

Maybe flogging would make it more popular? grin

Hi, I would love to do Herefordshire or Gloucestershire as I live between the two and find that there is never anything going on in Herefordshire and very little my side of Gloucestershire.

Who do I need to get in touch with ?

poppy1973 Wed 04-Sep-13 14:10:02

Found the email link, thanks

mignonette Wed 04-Sep-13 14:18:22

Ooh, yes, maybe. For Cardiff. Hang on, will email in a bit.

Part of me would love to do this but part of me knows I don't really have the time or energy! Anyone interested in 'sharing' Brighton?

KoalaFace Wed 04-Sep-13 16:43:12

I'm in Chorley, are you sorted for there or does it come under another site?

PedantMarina Wed 04-Sep-13 16:47:50

Well, just sent in my email for Sarfend-on-Sea.

Ahem, innit.

I'm very excited! West Sussex local here I come, thank you Emma smile

Tee2072 Wed 04-Sep-13 17:02:47

While we're talking about local, tonight is our #MNLocal twitter chat if anyone wants to come meet some of the LEs? It's from 8-9p.

mignonette Wed 04-Sep-13 17:18:40

Have requested Suffolk. Fingers crossed as am looking for a new challenge.

Tinlegs Wed 04-Sep-13 17:28:37

Might do Highland but lumping in "and islands" gives a geographical area bigger than Wales and no chance at all! Might be more interested if you broke it up a bit.

ChocsAwayInMyGob Wed 04-Sep-13 18:17:08

AnneEyhtMeyer- give Local a chance. It's a work in progress. Mumsnet was started in 2000 and took years to get going, but look at it now!

The site you mention might not have many listings yet, but there's probably some brand new editor trying to figure it all out and take it all on single handedly.

mignonette Wed 04-Sep-13 18:42:05

Thanks Emma for the Email. Will hopefully soon meet other LE's at training.

Portofino Thu 05-Sep-13 06:40:48

I do! If you can bring our Brussels site back!

Have been looking for a change of direction and toying w/ the idea of quitting my job. Not that I think this will provide a 'living' per se but definitely looking for a new challenge that will allow me to have more time to write too.

And have a life.

Hi IsotopeMe,

I'll PM you now...

I would like to see one for Somerset/ North Somerset and would volunteer for this. I can't see it in the list but haven't been able to find one either...

I found Somerset in the end - it doesn't show up in search...
I'd like to be an Ambassador for Nailsea if possible?

I'll share Brighton with you mrshelsbels

Scrap that - I am probably too busy to offer full commitment! Uni course, 2 jobs & 3 kids! Sorry - wouldn't want to take it on and not be able to offer what's needed x

Have a look at www.saveoursanity.org a local site for huntingdon. This is what a local site should look like but it's a lot of work and it needs to be run at this very local level to be of any use.

iWillDoItInAMinute Thu 05-Sep-13 19:20:53

Made enquiries re Bath, haven't heard anything. Does that mean its taken?

KoalaFace Thu 05-Sep-13 19:29:21

Oi mignonette, I wanted Suffolk! How near Ipswich are you?

I think that Highlands and Islands would be ok as one area - you don't have to physically tootle around the whole country. If you have a Local Ambassador in the more remote areas willing to organise meet ups and help add listings, you could do the rest via email/FB and Twitter.

We had Dundee and Angus separate, and it didn't work because people tend to search for the whole area, not just the town.

Anyone who'd like to do this, but doesn't want to take on the responsibility, think about signing up as a Local Ambassador instead.

The LEs are working to organise discounts and freebies for our ambassadors with our advertisers and other local businesses and you would also get a shiny MN card which you could use to negotiate your own special treats (ie free coffees for you at the venue you use for your meet up or free entry to a local attraction in return for a kind review on the site).

We need LAs for following areas in Dundee Angus and Fife

Brechin
Forfar
Kirriemuir
Monifieth
Montrose

Cupar
Dunfermline
East Neuk
Fife wide
Glenrothes
Kinross
St Andrews
Leven
Taymouth

EmmaMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 06-Sep-13 12:24:58

MrsBucketxx Fri 06-Sep-13 15:05:15

Just a quick suggestion, that on your links like active etc you should have a local active, you post on local and it gets lost as many dont look on there.

Or link it to the main site somehow.

Also I would love to run mine but its already taken, and it can be a bit stagnant as the mum who runs it isnt pushing it as much as it should.

Maybe asking more than one person or a group would ensure that new businesses are added, this way if one is busy another could help and this is not blocked for any others who would like to join in but cant as its one per area etc

Tee2072 Fri 06-Sep-13 15:25:34

::bats eyelashes innocently at Sacre::

I don't bite. Much.

grin

Tee2072 Fri 06-Sep-13 15:26:58

That's why we need Local Ambassadors MrsB. It's too big of a job for one person.

Perhaps you could be an Ambassador for your area?

Also, soon, any time anyone posts in your local, it is going to show up in your regular Active Convos. Or so we have been told.

MrsBucketxx Fri 06-Sep-13 15:29:25

I cant someone already is sad

MrsBucketxx Fri 06-Sep-13 15:30:13

Or can more than one do this im confused?

MrsBucketxx Fri 06-Sep-13 15:47:55

How do I nominate myself to be an ambassador then?

Tee2072 Fri 06-Sep-13 16:03:53

Contact the Local Editor or Local@mumsnet.com

Hi, just wondering if you got my email? Initials are JT.

LittleMissGerardButlerfan Fri 06-Sep-13 17:44:50

I have sent a message grin

AnyoneButLulu Fri 06-Sep-13 17:46:40

Oh Tee, that Active Convos thing will make such a difference. I honestly think it will revolutionise Local - my area is packed with MNers I know, but the Local chat is really slow.

Tee2072 Fri 06-Sep-13 17:50:04

That's how it used to be Lulu but we lost it with the site upgrade.

I know it's on what we call Listzilla, but how far down it is? That I don't know!

trouble is that you volunteer, you put up a few posts, you get no interest from posters and mumsnet ignores you once you've signed up and that's that. then they advertise that they need someone for your area rather than get in touch with you.

it's all a bit bizarre. like yes i'll do it, great go for your life, no demand, err let's pretend that person doesn't exist and advertise for someone else.

Tee2072 Fri 06-Sep-13 19:50:51

Swallowed what on earth are you talking about?!?! Is this recently? Because the LEs, I assure you, are not ignored by HQ in any way shape or form.

LEDundeeAngusFife Fri 06-Sep-13 21:25:21

Swallowed
Maybe get back in touch with MNHQ then, cause perhaps they lost your mail volunteering. There has been a lot of contact since we officially signed up as LEs. Weekly updates, and lots of mails inbetween. Or do you mean as Local Ambassador?

The LAs are assigned to the LEs, so you need to chat to your LE if there is nothing doing.

JiltedJohnsJulie Fri 06-Sep-13 22:20:18

?!?!?!

grin

i'm talking about what i said.

yes it was a long time ago.

Tee2072 Sat 07-Sep-13 07:46:36

So what you are taking about is being a Tsarina, not a Local Editor.

Just so we're clear.

iWillDoItInAMinute Sat 07-Sep-13 09:35:34

Tee I'm in need of Local Ed advice please.

I sent a brief email to MN stating that I'm interested in an area

I thought they would mail back, with a more detailed outline and a form or something to fill in and return

I haven't heard anything. Shoukd I email again with more details of experience etc? confused

Thanks

joeymaynard Sat 07-Sep-13 09:44:16

I'm hesitating slightly before taking the plunge with this....can Tee, or any other local editors give an idea of how much work they put into this per week - and, if it's not too sensitive a question - how much you can actually make in advertising revenue? I'd love to go ahead and do this, but have other job possibilities as well....

LEDundeeAngusFife Sat 07-Sep-13 11:28:06

Joey
if you are looking for a job, then I would say it is the same as any other freelance job. You get more out of it, the more you put in.

I'd say a minimum of a couple of hours a week, but you won't make much money. That will just keep it ticking over. It is quite time intensive at first, but once it is up and running, it doesn't take lots of work.

You do have to get out there and approach businesses to sell ads, and that takes a bit of time and networking.

ThedementedPenguin Sat 07-Sep-13 14:01:57

Just to let you know you spelt Co. Armagh wrong.

Tinlegs Sat 07-Sep-13 14:04:35

Disagree about Highlands and Islands....totally. This seems to be an area including Orkney, Shetland, Skye, Inner and Outer Hebrides, the Highlands (Caithness, Sutherland, Inverness, Cairngorms, Spey side, Lochaber etc. Huge. I am in Lochaber and would have something in common with many of the mainland places, even Skye, but Shetland is a different world, as are Lewis, Harris, Uists etc. I just don't like the way we are all lumped together like also rans.

Rant over. LadyBeagleEyes is from around these parts....what does she think?

LEDundeeAngusFife Sat 07-Sep-13 16:37:01

Tinlegs
I think the issue is that there is limited potential for advertising in more remote areas, and it is the advertising revenue that makes people want to be an LE. I see your point, but I don't know how else it could be done, from a practical POV.

I also don't think that the MN Local thing works so well in more rural and insular communities. The whole point is to connect local mums, and local businesses. If you go up to eg Badachro, everyone knows everyone anyway!

Don't worry though - we Scottish LEs have been whingeing about the London-centric stuff, such as the fuss made of half-term, and the differences in school holidays. We will be able to change that in the future, so we are not advertising school hols when our schools are almost going back!

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

UnhappyHammy Tue 10-Sep-13 09:39:15

So how much money do Local Ambassadors realistically make? And how many hours do you need to put in. All the info seems very vague!

Tinlegs Tue 10-Sep-13 12:17:49

Thanks LEDundeeAngusFife (my husband grew up in Wormit and went to St A). I agree about the London centric thing. I am really fed up of threads questioning people saying their child is at school when they can't possibly be at school, it is still late August etc etc. I am too busy to run one of these sites anyway but would welcome being involved if there is a Scotland section on the site or any developments.

SamInSouthWales Tue 10-Sep-13 12:25:28

UnhappyHammy- that's a fair question and this is my answer:

I think the info is vague because it varies from Editor to Editor. It's really hard to quantify. I have been doing this since May and made nothing at all. (So far at least). One Editor has made a thousand pounds.

However, I am really enjoying it, and I've definitely got every faith that this is the start of a big snowball. It depends on area too. I'm out in the sticks a bit so have to do a bit more on brand recognition and really get the name out there on Twitter and FB.

This is no get rich quick scheme, but it's great to have the experience on your CV, it's genuinely satisfying and a very good way of networking in your area. It's also flexible. You can do your stuff around jobs and kids.

There's no single definite answer about time and money, which is why it comes across as vague. It's very early stages. Remember though- Mumsnet took years to take off, but it's in a great place now. Local is still very young by comparison.

SamInSouthWales Tue 10-Sep-13 12:27:06

Oh sorry unhappyHammy- Ambassadors don't make anything, but Editors can. My answer was directed as though you'd asked about editors, not Ambassadors.

Ambassadors can hopefully get perks and discounts arranged by their Local Ed as a reward for helping to arrange Meet Ups.

JiltedJohnsJulie Tue 10-Sep-13 14:41:19

Know this is off topic but does anyone know how to change your local username? Thought I might as well ask where all the local Eds seem to be hanging out smile

While I was looking, I came across this webpage. MNHQ does it need updating? smile

i was confused over names. volunteered to do one thing a while back and did it for a while but not much response or activity then saw this and hadn't realised that in the interim they'd created new 'roles' with potential revenue streams.

i guess my point was that it would be nice to be kept informed. if there are local editors making money surely us ambassadors and tsarinas aren't needed anymore?

UnhappyHammy Wed 11-Sep-13 09:39:13

Sorry, yes I'm meant Local Editors!

I'm doing Suffollk if that's what you were referring to Give. Will be an interesting challenge and have suggested a few ideas to MN re linking into the 'This Is My Child' on a local level.

I've emails about a few things after being appointed West Susse editor but no reply for a week, I'm keen to get started! smile

mignonette Fri 13-Sep-13 16:48:45

I heard back from Emma saying she'd move my suggestion upwards but I guess now they're well absorbed w/ the details of getting everything set up.

I imagine it is actually a fairly major job as they indicated setting up training days and it makes no sense to do that until as many are in post as possible.

gazzalw Fri 13-Sep-13 17:00:21

So has anyone been offered an editorship since this thread started?

mignonette Fri 13-Sep-13 17:00:45

I have. Suffolk.

NumTumDeDum Fri 13-Sep-13 19:34:18

Me too, Portsmouth.

Mumlar Fri 13-Sep-13 21:29:07

If you have been offered an editorship did you have to give further details etc after initial email? When did you hear? Has anyone been given Shropshire to look after? Thanks.

NumTumDeDum Sat 14-Sep-13 08:23:22

You are sent a role description amd an agreement. If you're happy you send it back and MN send you a handbook, media pack etc to get started.

KatoPotato Sat 14-Sep-13 08:30:56

I think I've been denied? Does that mean my area will get an editor or not?

Wowserz129 Sat 14-Sep-13 16:19:33

I didn't even get an email back with more info! I hope my area gets a good editor as we are lacking in my area with that kind of local info!

KatoPotato Sat 14-Sep-13 17:36:43

I got zero reply too!

Kinect Sat 14-Sep-13 17:43:19

I sent a brief email requesting information, and have heard nothing back toosad

confuddledDOTcom Sat 14-Sep-13 19:42:03

Glad I'm not the only one waiting for a response.

I've signed up for Peterborough,
received my agreement and handbook etc.

I'm guessing they are pretty busy with the response so I would say hang on for a bit, all info has been from Emma so if it's just her doing it she may be a bit swamped!

I've been given West Sussex. I have the handbook and the Twitter details and the webmail login.

I don't have the Facebook stuff or the ability to see the editor chat topic on here.

What I want to do is to fill up the listings for days out/clubs etc but I'm not sure if I need any extra details to get me actually into the West Sussex site as an editor to add things and edit things, I'm not sure if I add stuff as a regular user of Mn local or not? There was no explanation in the handbook.

Ivan imagine they're busy with all the new editors and stuff.

NumTumDeDum Mon 16-Sep-13 11:48:59

Looks like I'm just along the coast from you Titsallinabumsquash. Haven't got my handbook yet, but have made a start compiling listings and events.

mignonette Mon 16-Sep-13 12:11:28

Might it not be best to wait for the training day?

I have my own 'action plan' and have several advertisers lined up subject to T&C but assume also that they have to be 'approved' by MNHQ as suitable for the company on the whole.

I have also arranged to meet up w/ some local organisations about 1) what they do and 2) what they would like the site to 'do' and am arranging ways of using print media to publicise Local Suffolk but again, think it advisable to wait for training.

LocalEditorWalsall Mon 16-Sep-13 21:55:23

I've just got myself all signed up, although I'm finding the Mumsnet email account rather confusing - is it normal that I can see everyone's emails? Can I not filter this in some way so I can only see my own?

parabelle Mon 16-Sep-13 21:57:40

I've not heard anything either, should I apply again?

mignonette Mon 16-Sep-13 21:58:09

I'm a tad baffled by some of it and fairly aghast that I have to sign up to Facebook- yuck. I'll tackle it tomorrow.

LocalEditorWalsall Mon 16-Sep-13 22:09:18

Oh dear, I think I'm confused, all of these 231 emails are MINE blush

mignonette Mon 16-Sep-13 22:19:17

Am thinking this is going to be a steep learning curve LeWalsall for us grin....

LocalEditorWalsall Mon 16-Sep-13 22:33:52

Well I DID say I wanted a challenge mignonette, certainly got that confused

mignonette Mon 16-Sep-13 22:48:44

It'll be okay. you can always Pm/email me and maybe we can muddle through together.

LocalEditorWalsall Mon 16-Sep-13 22:56:36

Thanks I may just do that. I just managed to import my email to run through Windows Live Mail so I no longer had to use that horrific interface, it hurt my eyes. So alas, there is progress. We can do this!

mignonette Mon 16-Sep-13 23:01:17

That's more than I can do. Will make a start tomorrow and see what havoc and destruction I can rain down on poor old Suffolk!

PlumSykes Thu 19-Sep-13 10:41:30

Has anyone been given Cardiff?

NumTumDeDum Thu 19-Sep-13 13:19:06

Bloody Royal Mail. Sent my agreement over a week ago and it hasn't arrived. Plan b involves storming dh's workplace and using their scanner. <strides off in determined fashion>

mignonette Thu 19-Sep-13 13:21:56

I sent mine by recorded Num because so many of my letters go missing.

Loupee Fri 20-Sep-13 16:59:46

I received my offer to be an editor today will get the agreement in the most on Monday. Quite excited!

Kinect Fri 20-Sep-13 22:55:59

Those of you that have received an offer, did you send a CV / more formal application?

I just sent a very brief email asking for more information and was going to send a more comprehensive, detailed submission based on the information Mumsnet sent confused

mignonette Fri 20-Sep-13 23:57:13

I kept it pretty brief Kinect. No need for anything formal.

evanscrittenmum Mon 23-Sep-13 12:27:28

I've just e-mailed regarding the Pembrokeshire site. We have lots to do in Pembrokeshire but only two theme parks listed on our local site. I would love to get it up and running. :-) Fingers crossed1

NumTumDeDum Mon 23-Sep-13 19:51:05

Yay! Have handbook and to do list. Now to get my insomniac ds to go to sleep so I can read it!

evanscrittenmum Tue 24-Sep-13 12:13:54

Exciting! Is there a date for the training day?

LocalEditorPortsmouth Tue 24-Sep-13 12:22:41

Just popped in to test the new registration worked not twirl about and show off and not after having to ask Emma stupid questions oh no.
Well would you look at that, it worked.

LocalEditorBournemouth Tue 24-Sep-13 12:32:17

If anyone is in Bournemouth & Poole and would like to volunteer as a Local Ambassador then please send me a message or email me: bournemouth@mumsnetlocal.com.

Good luck everyone who has applied. I'm really enjoying it so far.

New registration! How do we do that?! I've been editor for weeks now and have the handbook and stuff but no replies to emails about logins and Facebook logins etc. sad

NumTumDeDum Tue 24-Sep-13 14:57:42

Ah now Titsallin, that I can help with! You've been given am email address and password with the twitter details. Use that email address to join mn as a new member and your name is LocalEditor[insert area here]. You then verify the account by logging into your email account (page 19 hamdbook) using the password given with the email address. Hope that's clear. I had to ask too!

Ahh, that's incredibly simple, I'm very blush that I didn't think of that! Thank you very much. smile

NumTumDeDum Tue 24-Sep-13 15:40:24

S'ok. T'was a wee bit embarassing having to ask Emma, especially after I'd just emailed her my CV... As Homer would say, D'oh!

BinarySolo Wed 25-Sep-13 12:33:17

I emailed ages ago and have still heard nothing. Does that mean Kirklees is taken?

confuddledDOTcom Wed 25-Sep-13 19:15:13

I've just heard this week, my papers will be off as soon as oh gets them printed!

scrummummy Tue 01-Oct-13 22:32:04

oh has anyone applied for Waltham forest yet? I'll send a proper email in the morning smile
