Can't find it anywhere? Can't add anyone

Nerfmother Tue 25-Jun-13 21:00:08

Have they gone?

BIWI Tue 25-Jun-13 21:00:44

Does anyone actually use this? I had no idea!

Nerfmother Wed 26-Jun-13 06:48:13

Yes I had people to show photos to rather than just generally to everyone. Can't find it now has it gone?

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 26-Jun-13 10:02:41

Hello. Yes, we took the link away because it was broken - and therefore unhelpful.

You could make folks your Mumsnet Mates but the facility to restrict your profile photos so they're only visible to your Mumsnet Mates was disabled aeons ago (after a little bit of an outcry on the boards).

So, as making someone your Mumsnet Mate is now something that has no practical application at all any more, we took the link down.

Hope that makes sense!

wigglesrock Wed 26-Jun-13 10:14:20

Can I ask - I used Mumsnet mates to show members of my postnatal group photos. I used it quite a lot. Are the photos that I had on my profile which previously only my named Mumsnet mates could see now visible to all?

Nerfmother Wed 26-Jun-13 12:36:09

Oh good question- I used it to show my fellow grey ladies the progress with my hair!
Thanks for the explanation, shame though.

Unless I'm mistaken <quite possible> the facility to restrict pics on your profile to Mumsnet Mates hasn't worked for quite a while.

But you've got me worried now, so I will double-check for you.

wigglesrock Wed 26-Jun-13 13:11:48

I probably haven't put up pics for ages but I'm just curious as to what has happened to the pics already there.

Obviously my profile was public so that my Mumsnet mates could see them, but until I read this thread my profile was still public as I've no other info on it at all.

My query is that could everyone see my photos when Mumsnet Mates was done away with?

Nerfmother Wed 26-Jun-13 13:22:12

Argh I hope not!

Oh no Helen!

I really don't want my pictures visible to all. I'd made them mn mates only. So now I think I'll have to delete them...

wigglesrock Wed 26-Jun-13 13:44:19

Sorry Helen, another question - did I miss the sticky, pm, e-mail that told posters this was happening?

Well I know. That's why we took the link away: we didn't want folk thinking they were restricting viewing of them when they weren't.

Saying all that, we do need to be SURE we're right about Mumsnet Mates not working.

I can see your profile pics, MrsCosmopilite. Did you think they were only visible to your Mumsnet Mates?

There wasn't one, wigglesrock. We thought (obviously wrongly) that as it didn't work, no one would be using it.

I am also very upset (if it is the case) that on my profile pics it says to me that I have some only visible to mumsnet mates when anyone can see them! Another privacy issue that MN has fallen down on, I have already had a problem with private messaging reverting to a nn I had changed from angry. How are you supposed to know a marker such as "visible to mumsnet mates only" isn't working if no one tells you angry? Any why would you take it away anyway! It's very useful?

wigglesrock Wed 26-Jun-13 13:59:33

Yes but the photos were already there when MN decided to get rid of Mates. If I had have went recently to put photos up I would have realised. It simply didn't occur to me that I had to check my profile page, I'm never on it.

The reason you can see posters photos is because the profile was set to public as we thought the photos were private.

Exactly wiggles, MN has made photos public that were, as far as posters were aware, private!

We're very sorry. We honestly didn't know the link was still there until recently.

The Mumsnet Mates thing was conceived - and I believe mothballed - a long time ago (before my time, certainly).

We only saw the link - and realised it was linking to a facility that doesn't exist - a little while ago.

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 26-Jun-13 14:10:15

I'll also try to find out what exactly happened to Mumsnet Mates - and if it's possible to reinstate it (working properly), should folks want it.

So basically it is only worth having a profile, and/or photos if you want them to be completely public....I think you need to make this very clear immediately as I for one thought that photos I put up only about three months ago were only available to certain people, I would prefer they were completely private! Really shocking that this has happened. angry

Nerfmother Wed 26-Jun-13 14:16:12

Are my photos visible to everyone? I have a sensitive job and don't want to be identified!

Yes they will be nerfmother, not only did MN take away the function of making them visible only to mates (without telling anyone), they made them revert to fully public rather than private angry

Nerfmother Wed 26-Jun-13 14:20:10

Can you check? And let me know? I'll have to work out how to remove them on my phone. Eek.

Nerfmother Wed 26-Jun-13 14:20:32

And if I do work with or for you can you keep it quiet grin

No I don't think that's true, Sleepwhenidie.

We rectified a problem that was making it look as though photos were only displaying to Mumsnet Mates when they're weren't.

Basically, from what I understand, the function of making them visible only to mates hasn't worked for ages. We are checking on that, though.

wigglesrock Wed 26-Jun-13 14:23:48

Sorry my comments were to Helen about why she can see MrsComposlite s photos. Not an easy sentence to type smile

I can't see any photos on your profile if that makes you feel any better OP.

It just says you haven't made them public.

wigglesrock Wed 26-Jun-13 14:26:49

Yes, but I still don't understand why no one at MN HQ thought it was important that posters who don't visit their profile page often were aware of this.

No-ones saying it was deliberate but the lack of thought is cavalier to say the least angry

Er, so why when I checked my profile pics a few days ago had some of my photos changed to visible to any mumsnetter? I certainly didn't set them to that. Even ten minutes ago some of them were still showing as visible only to mumsnet mates. I have now changed them to private but will be taking them down because a) there's no point having pictures on there that only I can see, without making them available to all and b) I don't trust your IT settings wrt privacy in the slightest any more.

Nerfmother Wed 26-Jun-13 14:28:00

Thanks ABF - was a bit worried!

MarshaBrady Wed 26-Jun-13 14:30:47

On the photos page visible to mumsnet mates only is still a drop down option.

Are they public now?

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 26-Jun-13 14:32:10

Hold your horses, folks! We're just checking this out.

It may be that there's been some crossed wires at our end.

We'll post again when we're sure we know what's what.

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 26-Jun-13 14:47:30

OK. We definitely DID have crossed wires here at MNHQ.

Turns out that Mumsnet Mates is working and setting your pics to Private or Visible to Mumsnet Mates is working and secure, too.

Huge apols for scaring some of you unnecessarily.

We'll reinstate the link to make folks your Mumsnet Mates as soon as poss.

But, basically, you can rest easy. Your pics are not visible to all unless you have actively set them to be.

wigglesrock Wed 26-Jun-13 14:54:10

Helen, thanks for getting back but after I read this thread this morning, I opened my profile and the layout was different and it looked like my photos were public.

I sent you a report this morning saying that the whole thing looked different and I couldn't see how to delete the photos?

I don't think I'll be bothering with photos anymore.

To delete a photo, you just press the Delete button next to the Save button under each photo.

Nerfmother Wed 26-Jun-13 15:03:50

Thanks Helen. Would be nice to have the facility back.

Yep. Have requested it's done as a priority - since we messed up in the first place.

Will let you all know when it's done.

wigglesrock Wed 26-Jun-13 15:16:22

Helen, there was no delete/ save button - it was just the photos, that's what I noticed. I had quite a few photos up, the baby is now 2.4shock . There was no box that said visible to Mumsnet mates etc.

I'm well versed in the My Photos bit - precious third born blush . But the whole page looked wiggy.

Well that's very odd indeed. It's not looking wiggy at all from here. Can you bear to send us a screenshot? And tell us how you're viewing MN (ie phone/app/laptop and with which browser)?

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 26-Jun-13 15:27:14

Mumsnet Mates is now back, folks.

Apols again for all the hoohah.

Helen - how can you tell? My profile page isn't public smile

I was using my laptop with Explorer. It's just that if you have a gander over any pms I've sent, of which I think there's been one, you'll see that I had an issue with name changing recently. I just feel a bit uncomfortable with the registration/profile page now.

It's no big thing, never worry.

Are you talking about PMs you sent us? I'm not aware that you have - although I can check.

Or am I misunderstanding you? Entirely possible, given my track record today grin

wigglesrock Wed 26-Jun-13 16:04:50

No, I don't know smile . I had an issue with name changing a while back but it was all sorted. This morning I reported my first post on this thread asking how to get rid of my photos as there was no delete button.

I will try and fire up the exceptionally old laptop later and have another look at my page.

My phone doesn't let me do anything that fancy and my only other option is my Kindle Fire and I don't think we will open that particular can of worms.

You've had a hard enough day smile

No, don't do a Kindle on me shock

<wipes brow>

Thanks Helen for confirming! I'll make sure the pics are set to the right 'security setting'.
