The new Navigation Bar (at t'top): the "official" thread

(324 Posts)
HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 05-Jun-13 10:21:49

Hello. There are ruddy millions quite a few threads in Site Stuff at the mo about changes/glitches/weirdy stuff related to the release of our new Navigation Bar (the big blue bar at the top of the page that helps you find all the various bits of Mumsnet).

So, for clarity's (and sanity's) sake, we're starting this thread to keep everything in one place - and have just one thread where you tell us what's not working for you and where we update you on what we've fixed/are fixing etc etc.

Right then...

A couple of quick answers/updates for you right now:

* The PM Inbox flag/blog/"you've got a PM" icon is now back. Apols for having inadvertently made it disappear.

* The jumpiness/flickiness of the Nav Bar in general: we're working on sorting this now - and hope to have a fix released by tomorrow.

* MyMumsnet: this will reappear on the Nav Bar at some point in the next three days or so. In the meantime, you can find MyMumsnet here.

* Keep me logged in. We're looking into this - and will update you soon.

Any more Qs/probs/moans/peans of praise (hopeful), do please post them here.

That sounds like a post of desperation!

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 05-Jun-13 10:29:38

Does it? Oh dear blush

(Actually not feeling desperate at all; just come back from my hols, so really quite chilled and jolly).

AitchTwoOhOneTwo Wed 05-Jun-13 10:30:54

aaaw, welcome home.

Those new pictures are a bit bizarre. Especially Spaghetti dog. sad

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

Yes Kansas, the Work one, and the Pregnancy one, and the one of the woman shaving her face? The pregnancy one jumps out at you if you venture too far from the Chat one.

get rid of the stupid gurning pictures, they're annoying and horrible.

Aw, we're sorry you don't like them. We're going to let them "bed in" for a bit because we think that, once folks stop clicking on them by accident (because of the jumpiness glitch - see our OP), they'll be significantly less annoying.

But they're not set in stone. We can change 'em, and may well regularly update them as time goes on.

Maryz Wed 05-Jun-13 10:48:51

I genuinely feel the ticked "keep me logged in" button is the most serious issue. I feel this has probably security implications for vulnerable posters and should be an urgent matter.

In fact I'm considering starting an AIBU about it, to get the opinions of all those who don't use site stuff.

I hope you had a good holiday, btw smile

FruOla Wed 05-Jun-13 10:55:12

Thank you for bringing the envelope back - although, currently, it's disappointingly grey grin

We hear you, Maryz, we promise. We're just trying to get to the bottom of various related stuff first. We'll update you as soon as we can.

FruOla Wed 05-Jun-13 11:04:50

Aw Helen, thanks for the PM - all lovely and yellow and red blobby!

spiderlight Wed 05-Jun-13 11:08:17

I like Spaghetti Dog - I want him to stay!

LaRegina Wed 05-Jun-13 11:09:30

Please can you get rid of the spaghetti dog? It's putting me off my food sad.

Everybody was in agreement about it on my huge 'AIBU re spaghetti dog' thread recently...

<slight exaggeration possibly>

Maryz Wed 05-Jun-13 11:09:35

Oh, I've only just seen spaghetti dog - much better than cupcake.

goodness me, I like something new, it must be a cold day in hell

LaRegina Wed 05-Jun-13 11:09:55

Ok everybody apart from spiderlight grin

Jux Wed 05-Jun-13 11:10:06

Spaghetti Dog is the only one I like!

Perhaps if all the rest were cats ......?

Maryz Wed 05-Jun-13 11:10:18

I missed that thread Regina grin. I like him <stamps feet>

LaRegina Wed 05-Jun-13 11:10:19

And Maryz

angry

LaRegina Wed 05-Jun-13 11:10:42

Ok I give up

Maryz Wed 05-Jun-13 11:12:16

Oh, good idea. You could have a very stylish Siamese for S&B. And luffly kittens and puppies for baby and child.

<sacks marketing department and takes over the world>

LaRegina Wed 05-Jun-13 11:13:54

Um - why can't we use humans for human food and human clothes?

LaRegina Wed 05-Jun-13 11:14:47

Or maybe a man rolling around in alphabetti spaghetti for the pets section?

I have really bad PMT and they are annoying me so much that I want to slap the pregnant woman pulling a stupid face angry
I wouldn't slap her obviously as that would be very wrong

It must be raspberry leaf tea in her cup. Hideous stuff. Just the sight of it was enough to send me into spontaneous labour...

LaRegina Wed 05-Jun-13 11:21:01

It is currently my PMT-free week but I still also want to slap her smile

Indith Wed 05-Jun-13 11:34:47

I don't like that I can't click straight onto threads I'm on from the homepage. You could before (I hope, either that or I'm going mad). Now you have to click on talk and then click through. Why does talk not get a little hover of its own with threads I'm on, I've started etc.

WHAT are you talking about "spaghetti dog"??? I can't see any pictures anywhere, neither of canines nor pasta nor either combined!

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 05-Jun-13 11:40:20

Do you mean the actual homepage, Indith? Or the Talk homepage?

Don't think we've ever had links from the actual homepage to Threads I'm On. But there is a link on the Talk homepage - and every single other Talk page - to Threads I'm On: if you look below the Nav Bar, underneath the big black Mumsnet Talk, there are two lines of blue links and Threads I'm On is in the second line, second in from the left, next to Active.

Tee2072 Wed 05-Jun-13 11:43:12

Local link asks me to pick my local rather than remembering what it is.

shock And duly considered.

Indith Wed 05-Jun-13 11:52:46

The actual homepage Helen. I could have sworn on the old style you could hover over talk and it get onto threads or active or whatever from there.

There is of course the serious possibility that I have lost my marbles.

Oh, now you're making me doubt myself!

If it helps, you can get to Active from the homepage by clicking on the Active link in the middle of the line of links at the bottom of the Discussions of the Day box.

LackaDAISYcal Wed 05-Jun-13 11:59:21

The menus drop down when moving the cursor over them, however briefly (ie passing over them from navigation bar to further down the page) This I find extremely irritating. The drop down menus are also too big and in your face and the "gurning" pictures cringey. Apart from spaghetti dog; he is cool grin

I'm with Indith though; if you hovered over talk from the homepage, there was a sub menu appeared previously and you could go straight to Threads I'm On. This doesn't happen now.

Don't like it much. Can we have an option to keep it the same as before, like having your settings to MN Classic?

Indith Wed 05-Jun-13 12:05:51

Oh good, I thought I was going mad.

I like the mini drop down menus of old, they didn't take up half your screen.

But as you say these new ones are a bit glitchy so we'll see what they are like in a bit but I may be following LackaDAISY there with demands for a classic option.

LackaDAISYcal Wed 05-Jun-13 12:17:35

and another thing...I've just been scrolling through Threads I'm On, clicked on the one I wanted, but the position on my screen co-incided with the navigation bar position on the refreshed screen (iyswim) and I'm looking at the drop down menu for education which is all over the actual thread and in my face and annoying. and as it is so big and the navigation bar itself is big and I am on a little laptop, I keep hitting other menus when trying to get my cursor off the fecking drop down menu and I don't have time for this when I want to quickly check threads.

No like <stamps>

MrsBertMacklin Wed 05-Jun-13 12:19:42

My favourite of the stock photos is the doleful baby. Spaghetti dog is kind of repulsive, considering he's 'advertising' food. Can I suggest THIS instead.

Thanks for the update.

The baby looks like Jim Kerr from Simple Minds.

LackaDAISYcal Wed 05-Jun-13 12:21:54

The lifestyle one takes up about 80% of my screen, so I have to move the cursor all the way over to the sides to get rid of it, or go up and round to avoid activating the others.

My MN repetitive strain injury is bad enough; I can see a legal suit coming your way if it gets worse from all the additional scrolling wink

mistlethrush Wed 05-Jun-13 12:30:47

I could swear that I'm getting the drop downs flashing up even when my mouse hasn't been (that) near. Particularly common is the 'offers' one that doesn't seem to have a home so hovers underneath 'pregnancy' and around 'talk' of 'Mumsnet talk' - why is this one here and how are you meant to find it if you don't know that it is there (apart from when you hit 'threads I am on and it decides to pop up anyway). At least the pop downs are going away again quickly now - but having clickable ones would be preferable.

AnneEyhtMeyer Wed 05-Jun-13 12:33:52

I hate the pictures, especially the scary bunches girl, gurning pregnancy lady and stereotypical brainy child.

I hate that I keep seeing the pictures and drop-down boxes taking up over half my screen every time I move my cursor in the near vicinity of the bar.

If anyone looked at my internet history they would assume I was pregnant. I am not, it just seems every time I try and click on threads I'm on, the way I do it activates the pregnancy drop down box and then when I click what I think is "Threads I'm On" it is actually the antenatal groups. It gives me the rage.

MrsDeVere Wed 05-Jun-13 12:36:23

OMG doh!
I have just spent ages trying to get out of PMs and on to Threads I am on.

That bloody pregnant woman kept getting in the way.

You know what you have done, don't you?

You have made MN more like Netmums.

It'll be primary colours and tickers yes please you mark my words

i think you should change to the picture on "baby" to my DD.
she's much cuter.

actually, maybe you could have a competition for us to submit a better picture that sums up the topics?

i could provide a small (book...) prize to the winners (the real prize would be their picture on the flicky bit)

MrsBertMacklin Wed 05-Jun-13 12:42:46

Surely no-one can beat the dog photo I've suggested for Food? It's a dog in a beret, how do you top that?

Betcha glad to be back, eh, Helen?

I'll bet there's a dent in your desk.

<<passes Helen cool pack for forehred>>

BOF Wed 05-Jun-13 12:54:16

I haven't noticed any difference- mine looks pretty much the same as it's always done confused.

TheFallenNinja Wed 05-Jun-13 13:03:42

Do you have an army of beta testers? If not I'm happy to volunteer.

Yes, we're very very very very very aware that the drop-downs are very easy to activate by accident. That's one of the things we're working on sorting right now. Please bear with us.

Does the cool pack have gin in it?

Tee2072 Wed 05-Jun-13 13:14:56

What else would a MN cool pack have in it?!?!

mistlethrush Wed 05-Jun-13 13:23:33

Ice and a lemon?

Maat Wed 05-Jun-13 13:24:33

The baby looks like he is on an interview panel.

Blatherskite Wed 05-Jun-13 13:25:30

Ah so that's where the jumpy out pregnant woman has appeared from.

T'is annoying me tbh. Every time I go near 'threads I'm on' she jumps out at me!

itsonlysubterfuge Wed 05-Jun-13 13:30:25

The "talk" use to drop down and you could click on threads I'm on from the homepage, this is something I miss from the old site. I also don't like that for the very last drop down menu, I had to work out remember how to scroll left and right so I could actually click on the topic.

I do not like the spaghetti dog either. At least use a dog that doesn't look like a Mexican Hairless with fur. I like the idea of people submitting photos, we could all vote on which ones we liked best.

ICBINEG Wed 05-Jun-13 13:31:42

sorry - its a thumbs down from me....I liked that MN was so text based...

although I might change my mind if you used my cake photo for something <massively proud of recent gruffalo cake project>

ICBINEG Wed 05-Jun-13 13:33:13

hmmm in an attempt to be more constructive, the drop downs are just too BIG. You have to mouse too far to get rid of them....

moonbells Wed 05-Jun-13 13:42:58

Afternoon Ladies

I don't normally comment on site stuff (I just have Talk bookmarked so don't normally see things - just go straight there) but I went looking for the 'gurning pictures' and they nearly put me off my lunch.

Sorry. Twee. Ghastly. Yuk. <shiver>

Wish I hadn't gone looking now - can't unsee them!

Another vote for "Ugh! please remove!"

Blatherskite Wed 05-Jun-13 13:51:49

OK, I've just had my first 'pop up without me clicking on anything Persil baby massage advert'

That sort of stuff will have me leaving MN. I cannot stand those sorts of ads!

coppertop Wed 05-Jun-13 13:57:25

I'm not keen on the gurning photos but otherwise I like the changes.

As someone who still has the site set to MN Classic, this has surprised even me. shock

Blatherskite Wed 05-Jun-13 14:09:06

I'd clicked on a thread from the 'most popular' tab. 3 or 4 seconds after the page opened, the video appeared and started playing itself. I had to click to close it down to see the thread.

Blatherskite Wed 05-Jun-13 14:10:24

It was the "How did you get through transition?" thread and it did have the ad on that page at the time but I definitely did not click on it.

LackaDAISYcal Wed 05-Jun-13 14:15:25

Wow ICBINEG; fantastic cake!

OMG, you MADE that? <gobsmacked>

MonsterBookOfTyRexs Wed 05-Jun-13 14:23:05

ICBINEG Cake is marvellous, no wonder you are proud!

Just looked at the pics, sorry but the pregnant 'woman' looks like a 14 year old shock

Also I find them dropping down just really annoying, why change something perfect. sad

Hmm. That should def not be happening. Can you click on the thread again and let me know if the same thing happens?

okay, so my DD for the baby, ICBINEG's Gruffalo cake for the food section smile

Maat Wed 05-Jun-13 14:39:30

You can have a picture of me at work rather than that 10 year old.

<old gimmer grumble>

Blatherskite Wed 05-Jun-13 14:45:36

I did Helen. It didn't but the advert wasn't on the page this time either.

I did Helen. It didn't but the advert wasn't on the page this time either.

OK. Let's hope it was a temporary glitch. If it happens to you again, please let us know pronto!

tribpot Wed 05-Jun-13 15:12:46

My previous post on a different thread: No visual indicator that you have new messages, until you hover (painfully) over the icon? I am staggered that MN could find a way to make the PM system worse than it already was, but - congratulations, you have.

I'm doing some user-centred design at work at the moment so this is really riling me, but can MN please (a) reverse this change and (b) consider putting a user group together in order to validate changes before they are shoved into live?

For MNers who do a lot of PMing in support of shared initiatives like Woolly Hugs (clue: a different persona from regular users) this change adds a significant overhead to managing the projects.

Rather than just try and address the individual concerns of the new look, could MN look at the way it engages with its users?

Tee2072 Wed 05-Jun-13 15:18:07

Tribpot the envelope is back...

nenevomito Wed 05-Jun-13 15:22:01

I said this one one of the other threads, but a sticky to let folk know changes were coming / what was coming and some FAQs about what was new and where to find things that had been moved around would have been fab - and saved a lot of your time.

New stuff is great. Moving things around so no one can find things, not so great.

I'm also curious - there are a heck of a load of glitches for something moving from test into Live. Did they all work in test?

p.s. Yes you could get into TIO from the main home page in the last incarnation smile

nenevomito Wed 05-Jun-13 15:24:45

Not to be totally negative. I really like the fact that you can now log in with any of your usernames regardless of which one you are currently using. Very handy for the next time I am on a MN piss meet up and forget what I'd changed my username to when half cut on Gin as I was on the train down.

Especially since someone wouldn't let me know what I'd changed it to when I asked very nicely. grin

nenevomito Wed 05-Jun-13 15:25:50

<marvels at own utterly appalling sentence contruction>

LurcioLovesFrankie Wed 05-Jun-13 15:39:00

I hate the floaty over bar at the top. Please make them clicky links instead. Ta!

Blondeshavemorefun Wed 05-Jun-13 15:43:31

Also from other thread and have shuffled myself to here as requested by mnhq grin

I too missed the red box - I hope all is back to working order - thought my box isn't red or flashing - does that mean no one loves me anymore and not sending me messages sad or is mine broken sad

Waits patiently for a message to be sent smile

stickyj Wed 05-Jun-13 16:35:35

I always go straight on to TALK then "active". Why do they all come up so close together, don't like it. Also they start from the last post so every time I want to read it, I have to press"flip" to start at the beginning. Anyone having this problem or just me?

exexpat Wed 05-Jun-13 16:54:51

After all the work you've put in on MN Local, did you really mean to make it impossible to go straight to your local site? The only way I can find it from the new layout is to search for my local site every time - is this really how it is meant to work? I'm sure there used to be an MN Local tab/button before. The local site is full of tumbleweed rather quiet as it is, so I can't imagine this will help.

tribpot Wed 05-Jun-13 17:01:06

Tee - yep, spotted that but was requested to repost here, so I did! Not to mention I wanted to make the point that the PM system is dreadful - who on earth was consulted on 'imaginative ways to make it worse'?

I second UniqueAndAmazing's DD for the baby picture. She would be perfect.

ICBINEG Wed 05-Jun-13 17:28:05

See this is why I LOVE MN....there is ABSOLUTELY no way I could post boasty smug pictures of my cake triumph in RL....and get away with it grin

It was my first outing with the 'make grass' icing nozzle....but it definitely won't be my last!

<basks in warm cake achievement glow>

hmm pregnant 'woman' doesn't look under age to me...but certainly doesn't look like average mnetter age either...

that's one cute cute baby unique

Tee2072 Wed 05-Jun-13 17:41:27

Ah, I see Tribpot!

exexpat, that has been pointed out, quite loudly, by the Local Editors. Like we're not having enough trouble getting people to local...

babyheave, they never seem to test anything. Remember when the 'new' local went live?

Sorry, Tech, but it's true. I can't recall a single improvement to the site that hasn't been a total disaster. Do you beta test? I'd be happy to be a beta tester as well as whomever said that up thread.

ItsYonliMe Wed 05-Jun-13 17:42:53

The little girl giving the thumbs up in the photo looks like a very precocious and annoying child in that photo (I'm sure she's not in real life, ahem)

Shea also appears to have her ears pierced Yonli. shock

BalloonSlayer Wed 05-Jun-13 18:42:37

I could put up with the annoying drop down bar constantly dropping down uninvited were it not for the cheap, cliched, abysmal, unimaginitive, frankly ugly photos on it.

It looks like you sent your YTS trainee (or whatever they are called these days) to the photo library for half an hour with a list of cliches to find a photo for.

BIWI Wed 05-Jun-13 18:54:53

Welcome back Helen! (Bet you wish you'd timed your holiday to be back in about two more week's time ... grin)

tribpot Wed 05-Jun-13 19:13:14

I said on one of the other threads, I hope MN haven't parted with any cash for this site 'redesign'. If so they have been ripped off.

nenevomito Wed 05-Jun-13 19:17:25

I don't have a problem with the pictures - I think they're just fine.

What isn't so good is where the links end up over the pictures so in some cases you can't read what they say or it looks like bad design. That happens on Reviews, Life and Style and Pregnancy.

Pictures, yay! Links over pictures, bad juju.

THIS TOO SHALL PASS

At least it isn't as bad as when you changed to New Mumsnet

nenevomito Wed 05-Jun-13 19:50:23

I'm using IE9

Mme thats a bit unfair - I'm not complaining about the changes. Big links, pictures, new log in - all good.

The way My Mumsnet has disappeared and overlapping links on pictures are things that need to be fixed, not random complaints. Changing where things are and not telling people so they have to ask does generate needless threads.

From experience HQ know that any changes result in a load of crying and pant hoiking - so why not give warning so people know in advance what the changes are and where things have moved to?

Indith Wed 05-Jun-13 20:13:11

I certainly took me some of us a long bit of time to come to terms with new mumsnet! But I think most of us have embraced a lot of the changes. Bookmarks, colouring posts, pages etc are great.

I think this just needs some tweaking. I for one tend to ignore a lot of what there is on MN, information bits were kind of hidden away and lost but the drop downs line up the talk and the information links side by side. That's good and I am more likely to click on links other than talk ones with them presented in that way. I think it gives a quicker and more easily accessible overview of the content available on MN.

But the menus are too big. Even on my quite large screened laptop unless the blue bar is right at the top of the page then the bottom bits of the drop downs are lost as they don't fit on the screen and of course it being a drop down you can't scroll down to see it as it vanishes. Annoying. The threads I'm on complaint I made earlier is I feel more than just a personal annoyance. I come onto the homepage because I like to see the homepage and the inofrmation that is on there. I know that jsut bookmarking talk would solve the problem but then I wouldn't see the homepage. And if everyone goes straight to talk rather than the homepage to overcome annoyances caused by the new layout then there will be a whole load of people who don't ever see the stuff you put on there, the campaign links, the information etc.

MmeLindor Wed 05-Jun-13 20:27:41

oh, the constructive criticism is great, Babyheave. It is the why-do-you-have-to-change-things whinging that I find a bit much.

Of course they want to know when something doesn't work

MmeLindor Wed 05-Jun-13 20:29:12

And I have switched to laptop without mouse, and now see what you all mean - it is easier to set off the drop down box

Maryz Wed 05-Jun-13 20:30:15

When did they change to new Mumnset, MmeLindor [innocent]. I don't know anything about new Mumsnet.

Who remembers the uproar when they began to have set page widths, and we all had to put up with headache-inducing white patches down the sides? I nearly left then.

HarumScarum Wed 05-Jun-13 21:19:45

Those nav bar menus are really really annoying. They are FAR too big (lots of what drops down is white space, only required because of the frankly silly pictures) and they drop down when you move your mouse up to the top of the screen and drive me crazy. It's not a site-leaving issue, but it is really really irritating. Could you make them smaller so they don't obscure half the screen and take most of the white space and all the pictures away?

It's annoying swivelly shit and I'd be happier without it.

Blondeshavemorefun Wed 05-Jun-13 21:24:45

I miss the message box being middle top - it was obvious when had a message and now I have to move sidewards to see the icon - tho that may be an iPhone thing

mistlethrush Wed 05-Jun-13 21:25:27

I still have my threads reading from the bottom upwards - seemed wrong otherwise. The good thing about the change to 'new' was that you got a thread out very quickly telling us dinosaurs how to make it look 'old' if that's what we wanted.

What's happened with the log in - I seem to be on automatic on both machines I use rather than one needing a log in (which is what I want).

tribpot Wed 05-Jun-13 21:26:10

What browsers do you use for testing?

JoyMachine Wed 05-Jun-13 21:56:46

Argh... it just keeps crashing my phone browser constantly! (dolphin)

HarumScarum Wed 05-Jun-13 22:18:02

OK, this is the issue for me (Chrome). When I click on threads I'm watching at the top, the nav bar then loads in the exact same space where my mouse pointer is sitting, triggering a vast white space with a few words and some stupid pictures on it. Yes, it goes away quickly but it is v annoying.

LadyBeagleEyes Wed 05-Jun-13 22:39:26

Can i just say I love spaghetti dog.grin
As for the changes, well a change is as good as a rest for a blind bat.
Or something.

superlambanana Wed 05-Jun-13 23:52:09

I like the fact that it's clear, but I agree about the drop down boxes being too big - very a bit annoying that you can't see the whole thing.

What really bugs me, though, is that the smileys on the latest iPhone app are different to the ones on the site, and therefore if you put one in on the app it often doesn't make sense on the full site, and vice versa. Oh, and the fact that £ signs come out as £ which is REALLY irritating!! Please do something about these, MNHQ! (I miss the green smiley - comes out as a heart on the app, which is kind of the opposite...)

superlambanana Wed 05-Jun-13 23:55:13

Oh but I like spaghetti dog smile

Thumbwitch Thu 06-Jun-13 00:38:26

maryz, I remember that! The massive whitespace bits - eek!

I am GLAD that the envelope+redblob is back. It made me feel comforted again.

However. I don't like the flipping drop downs and I hope that when the desensitisation has occurred, they won't keep happening when I scroll down a page (I use keyboard arrows for speed and ease and if the cursor is in the wrong place then BANG! out comes some hideous picture).

Now having whinged about the drop downs themselves, I'm going to whinge about the content - surely you could have managed to get Living Overseas into one of them, hmm? I know we're only a small proportion of your reader/postership but we don't really like being marginalised, and you were kind enough to make sure that it re-appeared in the top few lists of Homes and Gardens, so what about putting it in the Life and Style section above? Please?

MardyBra Thu 06-Jun-13 08:27:44

Still lobbying for "Keep me logged in" to be unchecked as a default.

I knw this won't affect the many of you who stay logged in as you only have to check it once and the process is over.

For those of us who like to log out, it's a massive PITA. My reason is teenagers but like Maryz says there are a lot of vulnerable posters on here, who could be accidentally outed if they forget to uncheck the box EVERY SINGLE TIME THEY LOG IN.

mistlethrush Thu 06-Jun-13 08:31:28

Ah, Mardy - thank you for pointing this out - I've been wondering about why I was always logged in.

Triumphoveradversity Thu 06-Jun-13 09:04:40

Someone could get in to trouble at work because of the keep me logged in button but I am really worried about women who come on for advice about DV and MH issues.

I have no idea where spaghetti dog and the pictures causing hate are, where are the? Or has my mind just zoned out so much they are invisible to me.

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Thu 06-Jun-13 09:22:24

Morning all.

Quick update for you on what we've been able to release as a fix this morning (in addition to the stuff we fixed yesterday).

* The Nav Bar should, now, in general, be less "flicky"

* The Find Your Local Mumsnet link should now automatically take you to "your" MN Local, if you've already chosen one.

We know there's still a bit more to fix. We'll keep updating you as soon as we have any more news on that front.

Tee2072 Thu 06-Jun-13 09:54:58

Helen, I just noticed that there is something blocking the 't' in Mumsnet and the 'T' in Talk on the talk home page. There appears to be a hidden link on top of it for offers? The two 'Ts' look bitten!

MrsBertMacklin Thu 06-Jun-13 09:56:22

What tribpot said about the namechanging taking longer.

I use different names for special topics or RL interface, and can end up switching several times a day, often just for one reply or because I change and then think better of opening my gob.

Used to be able to go into My Mumsnet from menu bar on any page; now have to go to Talk front page, then through several layers. I think it's only a few clicks worse than it used to be - but actually I think this is a feature you should be making easier to use, not harder.

Yes, we know about this - and it wasn't deliberate. It is a glitch (see our OP).

We're hoping to have the MyMumsnet link back up soon.

Thanks Helen, that'll teach me to RTOP!

But can I take advantage to ask for a streamlined namechange?

Same number of security features, of course, but perhaps appearing as an option immediately after the password page (under Private Profile)?

And with a clickable list of one's user names? This info is currently available by a further click and then C&P, so the change would have no effect on security but big effect on convenience.

Pretty please...

Tee2072 Thu 06-Jun-13 10:51:17

Helen It's sort of like a problem I had previously with the layout of the top menu. It's fine in Firefox, though. So maybe Chrome just hates me? grin

Tee2072 Thu 06-Jun-13 11:14:17

Thanks for that suggestion, Tianc. It's a good one. We'll def have a think about it.

Tee2072 Thu 06-Jun-13 12:46:24

Tianc you seem to have me confused with someone who gives a fuck if you name change or not. I couldn't care less and I certainly don't sputter about it.

SoupDragon Thu 06-Jun-13 12:54:09

Personally, I think "streamlining" the namechanging facility is not a good idea. It makes it even easier for smooth sockpuppetry and trolling.

Tianc Thu 06-Jun-13 13:06:19

I'm not sure a couple of extra clicks, as at present, is enough to stop someone trolling or sock-puppeting. (But then I don't get why people go to the effort of behaving like that full-stop, so am not the best person to ask.)

But it's certainly a nuisance for legit daily longterm users.

Tee, I'm sorry if I've mistaken you for someone else. I post occasionally about cyberstalking and online security, and there's someone who seems to post indignantly on almost every thread about it saying, "Meh, none of this matters people. Everyone knows who I am and about my DC."

Apologies that I've confused you with that person.

Tee2072 Thu 06-Jun-13 13:15:30

That is certainly something I might have said Tianc because I do think name changing is a waste of time and I am very open about who I really am and who my son is. There is no privacy or anonymity these days and I wished more people realized it.

However, I certainly couldn't give less of a fuck about what others do and, TBH, I don't even recognize your name so if I did say it to you? It meant nothing to me. Sorry.

Soup Yes. That. Name changing = trolling. It's the one thing MN could change to make trolling less prevalent but won't due to the false sense of anonymity around here.

Frankly I think it's the one truly scary thing about MN. How many people think it's some sort of private board and post who the hell knows what on here.

Just an update on IE9 -

1. The drop down menus for Pregnancy, Life & Style and Reviews are still hard to read because some of the words words go across the photos.

2. The "Local to You" boxes within the drop-downs in Pregnancy, Baby and Child almost completely block the pictures.

I don't really mind the photos themselves. The one of the woman at work - that's exactly what I look like at the office grin

SoupDragon Thu 06-Jun-13 14:36:09

I'm not sure a couple of extra clicks, as at present, is enough to stop someone trolling or sock-puppeting

The point is: why make it easier? I don't think the current system inconveniences any more than a handful of posters. Most people do not feel the need to name change 57 times a day.

There is a vociferous minority who want to ban name changing completely. Making it easier is not a good idea.

We think we've worked out what's causing all that and have found a fix. We should be able to release it fairly soon.

The issue of the 'T' on the 'mumsnet talk' which comes up with a hidden 'offers' drop down is one that I've been mithering about since yesterday. I agree, on chrome it is still there - the Ts are slightly affected by it being there, but the worst thing about it is that it is too low down so is activated when you move between 'Talk' and 'Threads I'm on'. Its still there. And if you did want the 'offers' drop down there is nothing to show that you should hover there to access them...

I do like the less-flickiness of the dropdowns though - quite a relief that. Thank you!

Indith Thu 06-Jun-13 16:17:43

Oh yeah I hadn't noticed the offers dropdown over the T before. I use Chrome too.

No it doesn't resolve itself if I zoom out. I just zoomed to titchy tiny writing and all that happened was that it went over the top of the "Mumsnet" instead of over the "Talk".

Ok. We've managed to replicate this on one of our screens now, so we do see what you're talking about. We'll try to work out what's causing it - and get cracking on a fix.

I'm sure its already been mentioned but too lazy to read whole thread
I don't like that I cant get straight to active convo's from the home screen. Why doesn't it have active, threads I'm on, threads I'm watching etc on a drop down box like the others?

I'm trying to save on mouse clicks to help the environment (all that friction) so don't like having to click twice

Maryz

I genuinely feel the ticked "keep me logged in" button is the most serious issue. I feel this has probably security implications for vulnerable posters and should be an urgent matter.

In fact I'm considering starting an AIBU about it, to get the opinions of all those who don't use site stuff.

I hope you had a good holiday, btw smile

We hear you, Maryz, we promise. We're just trying to get to the bottom of various related stuff first. We'll update you as soon as we can.

Update re "keep me logged in".

We're going to fix it so that if you uncheck the "keep me logged in" tickbox, we will "remember" you've done that and, next time you log in, it will automatically know not to keep you logged in.

Maryz Thu 06-Jun-13 18:13:11

That's great, thank you Helen.

It's just such a silly thing that might lead to a lot of trouble. Whatever about being able to see someone's posts, being able to see pm's when people are offering rl help to someone in a dv situation could get very nasty.

I love your teeny-tiny quotes btw.

Indith Thu 06-Jun-13 18:13:27

You'vecattobekidding you can get onto Active from the homepage. Look to the right of your screen, you have the little MN talk box and there is a link to Active there. What you can't do is get to threads I'm on <<sulks>> which I have gone on and on about further down the thread so poor Helen is probably sick of me. I was a tad confused by the lack of a dropdown for talk too though I suppose most of the topics are in the other menus.

oldsilver Thu 06-Jun-13 21:20:09

I'm on Firefox on the craptop and have the bitten "T" with the secret Offers drop down box.

I also used to go straight to TIO clicking one button from the homepage. Could the purple "Talk" button on the homepage have a simple drop down reading:

Threads: Active | I'm on | I'm watching | I started | Last 15 minutes | Last hour | Last Day / Customise | Unanswered messages | Getting started | Acronyms | FAQs

Without any naff pictures or any related info - just a straight list?

I'm with Indith, I'm missing the easy access to Threads I'm on.

Before, I used to go to mumsnet, several times a day hover over "talk" and then click "threads I'm on".

Now I have to actually click on talk, wait for the next page to load, and then click again on TIO.

I know it only takes a few mili-seconds longer, but the extra click does feel like an irritating barrier, and especially as I do it so many time a day, waiting for all those extra page loads most be taking - oooh - weeks out of my life if you add them all up together, considering the amount of time I spend here!

aufaniae Fri 07-Jun-13 13:11:40

Hi Helen smile

Yes, I meant the home page. On a previous upgrade, you introduced a menu that appeared when you hovered over "talk" (At least that's where I think it was - using it has become so automatic I forget exactly!)

When you hovered over it, a "threads I'm on" link appeared (along with others - no idea what they were as I never used them!).

This meant you could get straight to TIO.

Now, you have to click, then click again, instead of hover-click.

HTH smile

aufaniae Fri 07-Jun-13 13:12:32

But actually it doesn't have to be the home page, it was from the menu so presumably accessible from every page.

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans Fri 07-Jun-13 13:19:05

I've decided I like the navigation bar, now the drop-downs are a bit less jumpy.

I like the way it brings up relevant talk boards and content links next to each other. Instead of going straight for Talk, I'm actually exploring the rest of the site & finding out just how much useful stuff there is out there!

I do think ICBINEG's amazing Gruffalo cake should be the food pic instead of spaghetti dog, though.

OK, well there's a TIO link on every single Talk page (under the big black Mumsnet Talk header, there are two lines of blue links - it's in the second line, two in from the left, next to Active).

And we're working on putting a TIO link on the Homepage too. Will update you when that's sorted.

I've still got the 'offers' tab coming up from 'Talk' though - and that one does come up when you're not wanting it to due to its location... I've hit it several times today.

Yes. Sorry: we haven't released the fix for that one yet. We're hoping it's going to be today. Will update you on this thread when it's done.

Well actually, we've just released the fix for IE9, IE8 and Chrome, so he's looking quite pleased with himself!

Let us know how it's looking now for you.

aufaniae Fri 07-Jun-13 15:00:04

I know where the TIO link is, it's now the first thing I press - well, after talk now ... several times a day grin

The point is that previously I didn't have to go via the talk topics page at all.

My way into mumsnet has changed from "hover-click" to "click-click", and that extra click means an extra page load to wait for, which noticeably slows by "user journey" down, which is a tad annoying.

What this is really about is loosing the "talk" menu which used to appear when you hovered over talk IIRC. However Indith and I only use it to access TIO it seems. For people like us, I expect a TIO button on the home page would cover it nicely! smile

If everyone used the old menu in the same way, no problem. However, if there was another popular link on that menu, then the people who used it will also be experiencing the same kind of delay on their regular journey into the site- are you adding any other talk menu links to the home page I wonder?

I appreciate it only makes a difference of miliseconds, and no one new will know it's missing - actually it's only regular users with this specific well-worn path into the site who'll notice the difference. But I'm one of them and it's annoying, and most especially I want to know you understand my pain grin

I'll probably have forgotten all about it as soon as I've got used to clicking twice

Lomaamina Fri 07-Jun-13 15:04:30

I'm using Chrome on a Windows Vista system. There is an improvement on the sensitivity of the pull-down menus, but they're still popping up (or is it down) when I go near them inadvertently - presumably lingering just that too long.

Was I right in thinking this is just an interim measure till you switch them to a click to select functionality?

mistlethrush Fri 07-Jun-13 15:39:59

'Offers' still steadfastly hiding over 'Talk' I'm sorry to say Helen... Still on chrome.

Indith Fri 07-Jun-13 19:36:13

All fixed here.

I do think the drop downs are a good navigation tool. They are just a bit big!

MissStrawberry Fri 07-Jun-13 21:09:30

I do not understand why there is a picture of a woman pretending to shave off a beard under life and style. It is ridiculous.

Valpollicella Fri 07-Jun-13 21:32:24

Just fyi MNHQ, I'm not sure if you've already tried to fix it....but the log in thing still stays checked, even though earlier I unchecked it.

I logged out and then just logged in again and it was still ticked

zipzap Fri 07-Jun-13 23:02:19

The thing I've found is that before, although the top nav bars were chunky, they were there, I could see them at a glance and I used them a fair bit, particularly the secondary nav bar.

Now, when I want to find something, I can't just glance and see it to find what I want - I have to stop and read and look and hunt before finding it eventually down in the footer at the bottom of the page.

Is there any way that you could bring back the secondary nav bar when you are in sections - and have the drop down available too?

Whispers - given that you have Workfest coming up - you have a great opportunity to do a bit of guerilla usability testing - and see people using MN. OK so it won't quite be the same as them being in their own home, but you'll have a whole load of MN users there in person whilst you can watch both the person and what they are doing online. Even if you just have a laptop set up in a corner with MN on, get people to have a quick look at it and say what they think while you record it, you'd get a load of useful info. You could also ask people if you can record them using MN on their own phone or tablet whilst looking at MN just for a few moments whilst asking them to talk aloud about what they are doing, you'd be able to get even more great feedback that would be a lot more expensive to get if you had to bring people in to test it normally. And especially at this moment in time, given that you've just introduced a relatively big change to the site navigation...

OK - have discovered something else about the Offers bit - I was in my messages, and went to click on Threads I'm On from there, moved the cursor a little too far to the left of that button and BING! Offers dropped down. Had to stay on the right hand half of the Threads I'm On button to click through - you can sort of see Offers obliterating bits of the buttons at the top (Unanswered threads is the other one affected, iirc).

Anyway. Just thought you might like to know that bit.

Thumbwitch Sat 08-Jun-13 14:00:58

Just had another look - it affects Customise and Active threads too. I guess it's because there isn't that secondary Mumsnet Talk heading on the messages page.

OliviaMMumsnet (MNHQ) Sat 08-Jun-13 19:02:39

Am I doing something wrong?

MissStrawberry Sat 08-Jun-13 21:22:38

I still want to know why you have woman pretending to shave a beard off. I just don't get it.

TheReverseStitch Sat 08-Jun-13 22:07:21

I'm using Chrome Version 27.0.1453.110 m and when I am on the Active Conversations screen the black 'Mumsnet Talk' immediately above the 'Talk: Customise | Unanswered messages |' bit has the top bit of the 'T' partially missing.
Hope that makes sense to someone at MNHQ!

I don't know if this has already been said, or if I am missing the point spectacularly (wouldn't be the first time) but with the old bar I could hover over the word TALK and the options for Active, I'm On, I'm Watching etc would appear.
With this bar I cannot do that. I have to press TALK, wait for it to load and THEN select Active, I'm On etc

So for me this is NOT an improvement.

SoupDragon Sun 09-Jun-13 09:08:43

Don't the links for Active etc appear on the screen anyway? At the top under "mumsnet talk"

Not when you first log into mn and arrive at the homepage. I don't have mine permanently open. Unless it has always been like that and I have not noticed, in which case ignore me blush

There is a link to Active on the main homepage. If you look at the Mumsnet Talk (discussions of the day) box on the right: at the bottom of it, there are three links - and the middle one is to Active.

HelenMumsnet is all out of personal responses for the day.
However, your post is important to us, please do try again later.

I CBA to read the latest replies (sorry blush ) but noticed earlier today that there was a random word (might have been Offers) in white over the bit that says "threads I'm on" in TIO.
It's a proper hoverer - comes up bold when you hover, but it was right on top of the link I wanted to click....
confused

has this been noted/fixed? or do I have to tell you about it now?

oh yes, you've seen and sorted.
sorry.

I'm with BehindLockNumberNine
I don't like hunting around to find the links for active, threads I'm on etc. Why can't they be in a drop down?
It makes it...well messy and unorganised and I like neatness and perfection

Today my talk button has jumped up to sit on top of the blue bar with the other topics on. Is it supposed to be there or is it just being unreasonable? that's messy too as the words don't line up now and it looks odd

RedKites Mon 10-Jun-13 16:48:20

UniqueAndAmazing - You can change what comes after the "Hello" on the drop-down box by going to "My Account" and changing what's in the "About You" section.

I did get confused because on my drop-down box it said "Hello Boss" - which is an extremely accurate description, but I wondered how on earth Mumsnet knew that. But then I remembered that that's what I had put as my name.

Lomaamina Wed 12-Jun-13 14:32:54

We are duly and humbly grateful oh wonderous one!

Thumbwitch Wed 12-Jun-13 14:33:55

thanks Helen - and wine. Why not - sun's well over the yard-arm here. grin

"You can change it. Just go into MyMumsnet/My account and find the First Name box.

You can either blank it out (in which case we won't address you as anything) or you can type in what you want."

but that's not he point.
I want my real name to be in my account details, i just don't want a button that says Hello Andrea.

it can't be that hard to erase it, can it?

or, maybe you could have a box that says "real name" and then one that says "preferred salutation/MN name"
because then i can still be Andrea, but be greeted as nickel

SoupDragon Wed 12-Jun-13 15:51:00

I've been Supreme Commander since the "hello..." first appeared - I have no wish whatsoever for my actual first name to be here at all. It seems unecessary.

BIWI Wed 12-Jun-13 17:20:11

Blimey, this place is all organ grinders and no monkeys wink

OliviaMMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 12-Jun-13 18:02:50

You're not wrong BIWI

What have you done with the search button?

I don;t like the other one, tis tautologous.

Bring It Back.

[moloko]

OliviaMMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 12-Jun-13 22:01:10

Sing it back.

BlackeyedSusan Wed 12-Jun-13 22:16:39

ooo have you fiddled about a bit with "fish face" (as someone named her) up there? ^^ she seems to be paying me less annoying visits as I haphzadly move my mouse around... and when did the envelope come back? [blind as well as uncoordinated emotion]

it is much better now.

nenevomito Wed 12-Jun-13 22:37:32

<sigh>

Look, I've been singing for 15 mins now Olivia and it's still not appeared. Is my laptop faulty?

ooh sorry I was ignoring you back out for a bit

I'm running Firefox on an iMac.

thumbwitch it does go back to the side if I zoom out but then I can't read the text grin
I will buy a large magnifying screen overlay

Hi Helen - TIO has gone over Search. Where can I search for posts now? The search function at the top doesn't have the same functionality.

Thanks smile

There's a big purple button called Advanced Search above the Mumsnet Talk/Discussion of the Day box and above the Moon - on every Talk page.

surely if there's an Advanced Search, you need a Simple Search?

I shall request one.

And expect one.

Yep, Simple Search is in the big blank box with a magnifying glass and a big blue blob with Search on it, right up at the top, to the left of MyMumsnet.

<bright customer-services smile>

nenevomito Wed 12-Jun-13 22:58:57

<cries>

<goes back to singing at her laptop>

Fanks.

nenevomito Wed 12-Jun-13 23:00:25

I've never used the purple button before. I'd never even noticed the purple button before. I've always clicked on the thingy under the doowhacky.

Oh god I am turning into a computer user.

That's more complex, you gurt tweedle.

It searches the WholeUniverse.

Advanced search only searches within the walls of MN.

So you've got it topsy-turvy.

You need to kick Tech.

<<adds doowhacky to fabulous verandah>>

What do you want Simple Search to search then? <huffs slightly at being a tweedle>

Or do you mean like my DH's searches? As in, "I can't find the car key. I've looked everywhere within 5cm and not even that properly because it's in my jeans pocket in actual fact "

nenevomito Wed 12-Jun-13 23:08:54

DH's searches are thorough, so long as they don't involve looking under anything or more than 2 paces from the original search zone.

Actually Chaos, is gurt tweedle a term of endearment as I'd hate to use it out of context grin.

Tweedle is a massive trem of endearment.

It has to be earned.

That's ManSearching, Helen.

It's a joy to behold.

<<is threadspired>>

nenevomito Wed 12-Jun-13 23:15:52

In which case I shall not be yelling it at pigeon man. The only thing he's earning is my utter loathing.

You need Buppy for those sort of things.

I'm far too PollyAnna.

oh you dirty dirty rip off merchants....that 'simple' search is powered by google...and it doesn't say so....isn't that like illegal or something?

tbh the whole search thing is bad news. It doesn't return hits in chronological order or anything, so you get this random mess back....

Sorry I think my language skills are collapsing...writing 'dirty dirty' made me think of Mal 'you dirty dirty whore' Reynolds and I have become strangely distracted...

Ill be in my bunk.

mistlethrush Thu 13-Jun-13 08:37:00

The Talk button moves into the correct location when you've got the zoom at 50% or 90%+. I normally have MN at 75% on this screen - plenty big enough. 50% is too small though, and 90% is too large. It doesn't particularly worry me - it might be worse on phones or something?

Try using the Advanced Search, ICBINEG. It's a little less random.

Will check about signposting the Google Search better.

nenevomito Thu 13-Jun-13 15:31:04

It says powered by Google if you click on search and it says powered by Google when it returns results if you use the search field. That's all it needs to do and its not illegal at all.

nenevomito Thu 13-Jun-13 15:33:32

If you're using the enterprise search - which I'm guessing a big business like MN is - then you don't have to use any google branding at all.

Oh ICBINEG, curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal! Sorry I haven't anything helpful to say about the Google issue - but I swear by my pretty floral bonnet we will get you an answer.

I love the thumbs up girl .... Shes a dude!

ICBINEG Mon 17-Jun-13 19:19:31

ICBINEG Mon 17-Jun-13 19:20:18

ermm actually thats going to make a closed loop...oh well...an infinite loop of firefly is actually not such an awful thing....
