Do you fancy representing Mumsnet at the G8 Summit in June?

RowanMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 20-May-13 16:24:39

Hello,

We have an opportunity to send an MNer to the G8 Summit in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland. The G8 meeting forms part of the UK's current Presidency of the G8, and is an opportunity for leading heads of government to get together to discuss major international issues.

The trip would be part of a project associated with the IF Campaign, and they're looking particularly for someone with an interest in world hunger. You'd be asked to report back as events unfold via a thread on Active Conversations, and also possibly speak to the press while you're there.

You would need to be available between June 16 and June 18, and willing to travel and stay overnight (unless you're very local); travel and accommodation expenses will be covered.

So if you're interested in international issues, and particularly the objectives of the IF campaign, do please post here to indicate your interest. We need to have a name by lunchtime on Tuesday May 21, so time is of the essence!

Thanks,
MNHQ

Sounds like a great opportunity. I would love to except the IF campaign and world hunger issues are not something I am that informed on.
Good luck to whoever gets to go.

YoniMatopoeia Mon 20-May-13 16:34:49

What a fantastic opportunity. I would love to do it, but I am sure there are others who know more than me.

CherylTrole Mon 20-May-13 16:49:30

Wow thats a fabulous gig for someone on here. Im not clued up enough either but I am certain there is a MNwho is perfect for the job! Enniskillen is a lovely place BTW. I will be following this with interest!

CherylTrole Mon 20-May-13 16:50:10

*MNer!

loopylou6 Mon 20-May-13 16:52:36

would you be able to take your partner with you?

RowanMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 20-May-13 16:53:06

It is indeed a fabulous gig: I represented MN at the G20 in London in April 2009 and it was tremendously good fun, and hugely interesting (and I got a job out of it wink)

You don't have to be an acknowledged expert on anything; the people organising the event are very helpful and can usually point you at someone who can answer any questions you might have. It does help to have a basic grounding and understanding of the issues, though.

RowanMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 20-May-13 16:53:51

loopylou6

would you be able to take your partner with you?

I'm afraid not - well you'd be welcome to bring them along I suppose, but they'd have to pay for themselves and wouldn't have access to the Summit events.

Tee2072 Mon 20-May-13 16:57:50

I would love to do it and it's right down the street but I just don't feel like I know enough about IF and world hunger.

Dammit.

mcmooncup Mon 20-May-13 16:58:21

I would LOVE to do this.
Work with people everyday who are starving. In this country sad but have a keen interest in global issues too.
I would pee my pants with excitement but also be vair serious when required.
<on knees begging>

GetOrfMoiLand Mon 20-May-13 17:05:24

Rowan that is great that you got a job out of it - I had no idea. Well done.

I would love to do it but I am completely unknowledgable about such things and am sure there are plently of others on here more informed and therefore more deserving of the opportunity.

morethanpotatoprints Mon 20-May-13 17:09:34

mcmooncup

Good luck, hope they pick you. You obviously are passionate about this stuff.
Please pick her M.Net

PromQueenWithin Mon 20-May-13 17:10:57

I have a small amount of relevant knowledge, I suppose; and it's an area I'm interested in. I was going to volunteer, but it sounds like mcmooncup is significantly better qualified smile

YoniMatopoeia Mon 20-May-13 17:17:12

<<peers at Rowan>>

You were an 'ordinary' poster before then. One with <<ahem>> a particular interest in policy politics?

If you were who I think you were that is.

sitzonhandz Mon 20-May-13 17:27:35

I don't think she is yoni... But now I do wonder. Bwahaha! I do remember thoughtful posts about her hair-do from star-struck posters in the pics from the gaff... <goes off to gig up old threads>

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger Mon 20-May-13 17:30:06

am very interested (along with many!) - am hiking a long way for Action Against Hunger in June (not the same weekend) and sponsored a child in Zambia for many years, not that this qualifies me (mcmooncup sounds infinitely more qualified) but putting my name into the hat

Fillybuster Mon 20-May-13 17:50:16

And once again MN demonstrates that is is about so much more than quiche and biscuits....wink

Ye gods, I love this den of poisonous vipers. Couldn't think of anywhere nicer to hang out.

Will be watching this thread (and the actual reporting) with interest. Way to go MN smile

RowanMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 20-May-13 17:52:01

<is mysterious> <but not very>

meglet Mon 20-May-13 18:01:56

That might explain where a certain poster went then!

I can't go as I'm not totally clued up on these things don't have childcare and would have to be polite to Cameron if I met him.

Good luck to whoever gets it!

mcmooncup Mon 20-May-13 18:13:47

I remember you going Rowan.....it was fun.
<ingratiating emoticon>

mousebacon Mon 20-May-13 18:21:45

Ooh I'd love to do this but I'm another who's not really knowledgeable enough sad

I did attend a UN summit on international womens day many moons ago though so have experience in the field

grin

IamtheZombie Mon 20-May-13 18:47:17

Zombie isn't really qualified enough either. Best of luck to those who are.

She would appreciate if someone could make a note that she'd like to be considered as the MN rep to any Zombie conferences that may come around.

grin

AnyFucker Mon 20-May-13 18:58:11

I vote for McMoon !

AnyFucker Mon 20-May-13 18:59:06

I am putting my name down for Fucker conferences.

I suspect there are plenty going on all the time though < eyes telly >

YoniMatopoeia Mon 20-May-13 19:23:49

I put my name down for any criminal justice / rehabilitation conference.

I am so tempted to beg muchly for this. So tempted. But in the spirit of wanting MN to have a more serious, knowledgeable presence , I will grudgingly defer.

Bicnod Mon 20-May-13 19:29:46

Just got a fb post from MNer friend about this thread. On holiday on phone with crap reception so can't post much but this is something I could be very interested in doing.

Have worked for a well known international development org as well as a couple of smaller development charities. Know a bit about the IF campaign.

Would love love love to be considered.

smile

Bogeyface Mon 20-May-13 20:06:06

I would like to throw my name in too. My main interest is in Aid and not only how it is used but how the countries giving Aid are sure that it is going to the places it is needed and not to corrupt governments or officials. Also, I have been part of the Nestle boycott for years, I feel that what Nestle do is just the tip of the iceberg of large companies exploiting the developing nations for profit.

AnyFucker Mon 20-May-13 20:07:24

Ooh, some more worthy peeps.

Competition, McMoon ! smile

mcmooncup Mon 20-May-13 20:25:18

I'd wear Boden.
I'd bring a biscuit tin to ask all the vair importants about their biscuit choice.
I boycott Greggs sausage rolls that's not true
I'm sure there are lots of worthies. grrrrr

I am amazing at hustling though. I don't care if that is awful. I'd get us some good stories grin possibly not the ones Rowan necessarily wants

Pleaseandthankyou Mon 20-May-13 20:41:38

This sounds like a very worthwhile way to spend a few days. I have been very interested in the debate over biofuels and have been following Action Aid's campaign. I was also shocked at the tax avoidance of multi national companies in third world countries. They are all part of the same big picture. I would love to be considered. I have been following a low carb thread on mumsnet and I'm just think sitting here thinking how ironic that is. Life is a lottery and where you are born determines how tough it is. While I have too much to eat and am struggling to reduce my intake someone else is starving and wondering how to feed their children

MiniTheMinx Mon 20-May-13 20:47:42

Excellent post Bogeyface although I agree with Parenti on this, the Western Governments have historically not worried if the money found it's way into the back pockets of corrupt officials and puppet dictators. In fact a certain Western country has waged political, violent and economic war upon any nation that fails to open up their economy to foreign investment. Advanced capitalism with it's unequal development across the globe, the debt slavery of poorer countries and the insistence that neo-liberal free market reforms be embraced have caused the crisis. Where subsistence farming and pre-capitalist forms of exchange have existed the corporations have called upon government interventions to open these countries up to capitalist exploitation of cheap labour and new markets.

The third world is not underdeveloped (not in the way we are led to believe) but over exploited. Those countries richest in natural resources of often those in debt peonage to the world bank and IMF.

I would love the opportunity to represent MN at the G8.

We have been sponsoring a child in Bolivia for some time. I am passionate about ordinary working people being given the educational opportunities, access to direct funding, access to capital/tools and believe that where pre-capitalist means of exchange have in the past fed families, what is needed is something other than free market reform.

The neo-liberal free market model is failing to feed the world. It isn't the best way of ensuring a fair distribution.

I have no idea about anything but I'll go. Is there free grog?

nononsensemumof2 Mon 20-May-13 20:52:42

I would love to represent mumsnet, and speak up for all women hungry for food and equality, world wide. I have a vast experience of public speaking, community politics and womens issues in particular. Please dont hesitate to get in touch for more details.

AnyFucker Mon 20-May-13 20:52:49

arf

hahahahaha

Just don't ask you about DNA though, eh, Nononsense?

AnyFucker Mon 20-May-13 20:53:33

that was to Eleanor, not you, nono

you are very serious'n'stuff smile

MiniTheMinx Mon 20-May-13 20:58:41

What's this about DNA?

nononsensemumof2 Mon 20-May-13 21:00:08

On the contrary , Elenorhandbasket, its one of my favourite subjects, as I'm sure you are alluding to. If we dont all wish to go to Hell in a hand basket, that is.!

nononsensemumof2 Mon 20-May-13 21:01:28

AF Thanks. You are so right!

SacreBlue Mon 20-May-13 21:03:36

I'd be interested too. I have experience of lobbying at local, national and European levels and am very familiar with working with the media. I am not totally local to Enniskillen but Belfast so close enough if follow up interviews by local media were required.

Do we need to send CV/details of our experience or is it a 'lucky dip' type affair?

MrsGeologist Mon 20-May-13 21:45:30

Or TSC, because she probably would swear and I think the G8 summit needs a bit of swearing.

Conina Mon 20-May-13 21:46:51

I would love to do this - I'm in NI, and would love to swot up on this cos I do have a brain rattling around in here somewhere!

Pick me!

reelingintheyears Mon 20-May-13 21:49:44

Does the lucky winner get a job at HQ? grin

GetOrfMoiLand Mon 20-May-13 21:50:38

I vote for TSC, that's very impressive organising that funding for the catering over the holidays.

mcmooncup Mon 20-May-13 21:57:41

That is great TSC you have got funding,
I have ONE soup kitchen to refer people to in a very large city. It is struggling for funds at the moment big time. It makes me so angry.

I had someone who had not eaten for EIGHT days the other week. Should. Not. Be. Happening.
If we can't feed our people with all our resources......there is a massive denial problem. People can't believe it is going on.....

I vote Tsc too.

Even though she's too young to be a proper grown up.

CherylTrole Mon 20-May-13 22:05:00

I vote for Xenia, Usualsuspect, Anyfucker and scottishmummy to all go, that should cover most aspects confused All armed with a think gin tank!

But not ... uh... Table dancing as such though...

MrsGeologist Mon 20-May-13 22:08:56

Heyzeus TSC, that's a lot of stuff to do. Have I mentioned recently that you're aces?

MrsDeVere- because she is wise, calm, and understands adversity

HotheadPaisan (as she is now) - because she'd cover SN and feminism, and she's great at chatting to anyone

and Tee, I like tea tee.

I don't think we should send cod, as it's probably best not to tell them to "think fish" <cough>

JoyMachine Mon 20-May-13 23:16:50

ssd she's really good looking! envy

liger Mon 20-May-13 23:50:25

I'm very much a lurker so I almost wonder if that disqualifies me automatically? I would be very interested in going to the G8 and to feedback to Mumsnetters on this issue.

I would be particularly interested in how mothers in the poorest communities around the world can be supported in bringing about an end to the ongoing chronic hunger, that limits the lives and chances of individuals before they are even born, especially as numerous studies
show that mothers within the household often do the most to protect the nutritional status of their children during a hunger crisis. As mothers we can all relate to this, but I wonder if the G8 leaders consider this very often as they discuss the Economic constructs of
men in suits?

I'm a little bit nervous about this coming across as one of those opening monologues that the contestants do on The Apptentice which always make me feel uncomfortable in my own skin just watching! I do have relevant experience and I think I could do a good job but would rather not spell it all out here - please, thank you.

YoniBottsBumgina Tue 21-May-13 00:12:51

I just love that mumsnet are going to send a poster to this. Good luck to everyone who wants to go smile if we're doing votes I vote for someone who has at least lurked if not posted for a long time so that they can be a true representation of mumsnet.

YoniBottsBumgina Tue 21-May-13 00:15:50

As in, I don't think lack of posting should disqualify anyone but it would be a shame if the person picked had signed up just because of this and hadn't used Tue boards at all (can we devise a real/fake lurker quiz? grin)

TSC is the project you have organised taking place in London? If you are in need of volunteers, don't hesistate to give me a pm.

Paddlinglikehell Tue 21-May-13 00:38:13

Sounds a fantastic and worthwhile opportunity, however I know I would be next to useless! If it was about dogs then I'm your woman.

In the meantime good luck all.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered Tue 21-May-13 01:01:50

Ah, so Rowan was Mitmoo? Coowell!

I'd like to nominate Mme Lindor, who is conspicuous by her absence.

And can I budge in on the nice(ish) but useless bench please smile

So thats why Mitmoo is a forbidden topic, I have always wandered!

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered Tue 21-May-13 01:57:51

wink grin

ohforfoxsake Tue 21-May-13 07:19:07

I only came on here to see if TSC had put herself forward.

MNHQ - seriously she gets stuck in to this kind of stuff and is dead clever like.

letsgoflyakite Tue 21-May-13 08:53:43

I may as well put myself out there! I travelled to Liberia with Save The Children in December prior to the launch of Enough Food IF campaign. I am a health campaigner and a children's nurse, and am hoping to embark on a Tropical Disease course in September. The G8 summit is an amazing opportunity to advocate for the millions of people who go hungry every day. I feel with what I saw in Liberia, this would make it very easy for me to speak openly about it. There is enough food for everyone, but not everyone has enough food. I have also been followed up by various media outlets since my return and am confident and comfortable in front of a camera. Ohh and I have an IF bracelet that I can wear!!

RowanMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 21-May-13 09:06:37

Hello

Thanks very much for all of these. We've got another couple of hours to make a decision so do please keep nominating/indicating who you'd like to see do it.

Bicnod Tue 21-May-13 09:13:36

RowanMumsnet, how are you deciding who gets picked? Is it on the basis of what we've written here or will you be getting in touch to find out more about peeps?

JustineMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 21-May-13 09:17:47

We'll put all the names of those who've indicated an interest and contacted us direct into a hat and pick one out, plus a couple of back-ups.
It's the fairest way I think. Any last entrants please indicate your interest before 11 am today.
Cheers for the interest all.

Bicnod Tue 21-May-13 09:19:23

Thanks Justine, won't bother doing my elevator pitch then grin

Salbertina Tue 21-May-13 09:26:53

Well, I'm also interested having been involved in several projects with various NGOs over the years in S African townships including:

a school & creche malnutrition project;

involving local schools in making regular lunches for other underprivileged kids nearby

Public health work inc healthy eating

School literacy work

Thanks.

Salbertina Tue 21-May-13 09:29:57

<whoops, did i just do elevator pitch?!>

milk Tue 21-May-13 09:30:51

Just read about the IF campaign.

enoughfoodif.org/g8/london

I'll definitely be going to London on 8th June!

reelingintheyears Tue 21-May-13 09:40:24

Seriously,as world hunger is the main issue,TSC must be a contender, she is committed and has insight and energy.

She has my vote.

Another (proper, in case you thought I was joking before) vote here for TSC, she'll be perfect for this.

If you wont pick me, that is.

TunipTheVegedude Tue 21-May-13 10:01:26

I can think of several people who would be fabulous (Mme Lindor for one) but TSC's practical experience would be really useful I think. Hope you pick her!

MiniTheMinx Tue 21-May-13 10:07:25

JustineMumsnet

Noooooo, please don't just pick some one at random in a lottery. Pick the person who has the democratic support of the community here.

Whilst I would love to go, would be happy to represent the community at the G8, my perspective on life and all is not representative of MN.

We need to see the most popular candidate go.

BOF Tue 21-May-13 10:13:10

I vote for thesecondcoming too- I know she's been brilliant at running community campaigns in her area, and she definitely isn't backwards in coming forwards wink.

nenevomito Tue 21-May-13 10:41:24

Bloody hell TSC. You're not the complete cunt that everyone thinks you are, are you?

grin

I'd love to do this, but lack the knowledge to do as good a job as some of the others on here.

mirai Tue 21-May-13 10:45:53

I think it should be a lottery, else it just comes down to how many friends you have on here...

Me please. Before I had the girls I ran an agency doing the advertising/fundraising for War on Want, Greenpeace, Amnesty etc. I now write a bog about surviving life with twins (likepeasinapod.com). I support a centre in Peru for disabled children, financially, and also with visits. I am a card carrying Labour activist and school trustee.

I would LOVE to represent my fellow Mumsnetters

FuckThisShit Tue 21-May-13 11:02:13

Another vote for TSC from me. She has done some fantastic work in recent months and is full of the most wonderful passion. She would be absolutely brilliant.

GetOrfMoiLand Tue 21-May-13 11:05:15

Good luck all those who have their hat in the ring.

I must say picking someone from a hat is probably not what I would do, there are a couple of really worthy candidates on here who are regular MNers, I would much prefer it went to someone who was part of this community and not someone who has just appeared out of lurkerdom for this reason, tbh.

But anyway, I hope it goes well for the person who gets it.

GetOrfMoiLand Tue 21-May-13 11:06:32

Sinking you are someone else on this thread to make me feel ashamed grin

RowanMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 21-May-13 11:07:28

Hello hello

Thanks so much for all of these - what a fearsome bunch you are (in a good way)

We'll be back soon with a shiny envelope

AnyFucker Tue 21-May-13 11:09:43

The suspense !

< faints >

My suspenders!

<swoons>

liger Tue 21-May-13 11:16:09

Oh I hope that being a lurker doesn't exclude someone from beige a part of this community? Mumsnet has played an important part of my
mothering experience over the last eight years, it's just that my character is not one for the cut and thrust of the boards on a regular basis. Perhaps if I don't get to the G8 I'll start advocating on behalf lurkers?

LadyBeagleEyes Tue 21-May-13 11:17:02

I also don't think picking the name out of a hat is a great idea, unless you check that it is someone who has been a member of Mn for a while.

liger Tue 21-May-13 11:18:40

Being not beige! I previewed that post too. Gah!

Good luck everyone.

GetOrfMoiLand Tue 21-May-13 11:19:05

I meant no offence liger. It's just that I think having someone who is a regular poster would be more valuable to others in that they would post about their experience, if you are a natural lurker you probably wouldn't post very much about it anyway and pass details on to educate others.

GetOrfMoiLand Tue 21-May-13 11:20:33

Lol at beige. grin

I hope though now that you have posted you will continue smile if you got this gig you would HAVE to start a thread about it as well

MmeLindor Tue 21-May-13 11:24:19

Thanks, Bewitched, for nominating me, and those who have suggested that I nominate myself.

I was lucky enough to be sent to Kenya last year to blog for Mumsnet, but that was about family planning and reproductive rights, not about food hunger, and I don't feel qualified to really do this justice.

Added to that, I flew to Nairobi on DH's birthday last year, and this is over the same weekend, so you would likely be responsible for him LTB. smile

Can't you send two people? There are some great people who have the international experience, but I also think that someone like TSC who is highlighting the issue here in UK would be fantastic.

It upsets me greatly to hear that people are going without food for EIGHT DAYS cause they can't afford to eat. That is appalling.

Badvoc Tue 21-May-13 11:24:25

God, is love to do this!
Don't know anywhere near enough about it sadly sad

TheSecondComing Tue 21-May-13 11:24:47

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

liger Tue 21-May-13 11:27:28

No offence taken GetOrf. I was assuming MNHQ would check our history of posting as part of the vetting process and the lurking might exclude me. The thing is this is a subject I am passionate about so I would be quite happy to post about it - I think. Usually on the boards someone has already responded with much more eloquence and wit and I have no urge to add my echo to the chorus!

GetOrfMoiLand Tue 21-May-13 11:28:22

Shame it can't be a couple of people isn't it.

MmeLindor Tue 21-May-13 11:29:18

TSC
I agree. If I were to decide based on persons I like, I would choose you cause you are luffly.

GetOrfMoiLand Tue 21-May-13 11:30:38

No, I doubt that MNHQ would exclude, I have read loads of times that they want to encourage lurkers to post and this would be an opportunity.

The fact that someone else has posted something articulate already shouldn't stop you! Bloody hell if I thought that I would never have posted my pointless witherings at all! Get stuck in is the best way. grin
