Is this really the sort of advertising that you want?

I've screen captured a strap advert that keeps following me around the site..
It's at the top of my profile.

Is this really the sort of thing you want on your site?

Tee2072 Fri 17-May-13 09:12:32

That's really bizarre Ruby!

I think they are google ads aren't they? So they will be specific to you.

not that someone really is spying on you grin

coppertop Fri 17-May-13 09:44:12

All I've got is an ad for "auto-enrolment middleware". I have no idea what that even is.

<mutters>

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 17-May-13 09:44:54

Morning, RubyGates. We'll take a look into this.

Adblock, people.
It's changed my life, I tell you.

RubyGates Fri 17-May-13 19:55:18

<paranoia>

AvrilPoisson Fri 17-May-13 23:10:12

I have one on the side column for www. happybirthday. com
Which features a "funny poledance" card, with a rather large-chested woman leering at me hmm

Not impressed!

OliviaMMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 17-May-13 23:13:46

Hi Avril
Thanks for that - we'll get onto it forthwith.

RubyGates Sat 18-May-13 08:36:06

The link for the "spied" ad is
{ http://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/aclk?sa=l&ai=C_V8_8S6XUeS9MtTm8APoy4HYB7mjjLAD2aPlh0igyZSYQxABIKyi3BxQsNTJWWC7vq6D0AqgAY_kgdcDyAEC4AIAqAMByAOdBKoE-gFP0KSvp5yXj7zQe7_vQew4cRbqDn9FQPxwSER_LdpIMkIxaZN3rZhKOJ96f2QeY0Fnjg8A3QYABuE3GcfTlOV3ayABpIvTJkqSYDe5s2VWu9Dtui14zwtIyh2ee0OZre2GAcjtkcH0CMJm9OfR9B00JDJbU-gTtJnEIZMYONb6i1OSyty6KNf1wQ7sgJKRYt-azKdypNCTkxM5W7KHZLEdWjSBH2B7gvAY8FjEWVAZFtD_-HorMBXYrjp9qpw95KoIhVSKQOI5kMSOXGjhzc-x1zba558_MVRuHYuQqB_4ITmdqOHbuMyQhSiO_tF4bIns-U4Rf3kXe9eg4AQBoAYCgAfZm_4o&num=1&sig=AOD64_2ftWS49YHGI5GRnUKZNTVlttVxuw&client=ca-pub-1533521060959988&adurl=http://m.spyguardapp.com/r/%3Fts%3DTS3135%26utm_source%3DAdwords%26utm_medium%3DDisplay%26utm_content%3Dvarious%26utm_campaign%3DCPN8942&nm=2&nx=74&ny=54&mb=34 }

aufaniae Sun 19-May-13 08:33:22

I came here to mention the same ad. It looks really dodgy if you ask me, and not at all what you'd expect from mumsnet.

If I was a newbie it'd put me off the site, or at least give me a bad impression of it.

I haven't clicked the link - who's it from?

aufaniae Sun 19-May-13 08:34:34

Sorry, I meant the "2 people spied ... " ad

NicholasTeakozy Sun 19-May-13 09:03:18

To stop Google ads switch search engines. Get Startpage which uses the same search method as Google but doesn't place cookies nor does it track your IP address. Also, install and configure Ghostery, a brilliant widget that detects and blocks tracking cookies.

No more targeted ads.

RubyGates Sun 19-May-13 09:45:55

It's for an app callled "spyguard" Ironically.

RubyGates Sun 19-May-13 09:46:17

Thanks Nicholas!

NicholasTeakozy Sun 19-May-13 15:03:02

I've had a look at the Spyguard link Ruby and it looks like spyware/malware. If you c&p the link it offers you a download that somehow seems dodgy. I did a search and it appears to be 'Scareware', ie it offers a free 'scan' and offers to clean up non-existent viruses.

RubyGates Sun 19-May-13 15:31:29

Hmmmmm. It sounds "well dodgy".

I'd never click on a link like that (or indeed anything from a random site) My OH being an expert in digital security, but others might. It's a bit crap really.

Thanks again Nicholas.

RebeccaMumsnet (MNHQ) Sun 19-May-13 18:43:15

Can you still see that ad Ruby?

RubyGates Sun 19-May-13 18:48:31

No! It hasn't been seen since yesterday smile

I saw it this morning when I logged on.

NicholasTeakozy Sun 19-May-13 20:42:12

You're welcome Ruby. I got caught out by a similar thing when I was new to the internet. Now I have a traditional antivirus, Threatfire, two Flashblockers, AdBlock Plus, NoScript and Ghostery.

And Kitten Block to stop me going to the Daily Heil website. smile

RubyGates Sun 19-May-13 20:47:37

Lovely, lovely, soothing kittenblock smile

MuseumOfHam Sun 19-May-13 20:57:15

I'm a relative newbie and it quite spooked me. I'd just worked out that you can look at some people's profiles, presumably their choice to make them public, and had randomly clickeded on two people's, then there it was: 2 people have spied on you. Took me a min to realise it was just an ad.

RebeccaMumsnet (MNHQ) Sun 19-May-13 21:35:14

BeerTricksPotter

I saw it this morning when I logged on.

Any idea where BTP?

As a 'banner' ad across the top of the page above list of TIO (where the Aviva Railway Children ad usually is) iirc, Rebecca. About 9am yesterday.
It's gone now - I have freestanding baths for sale now.

RubyGates Mon 20-May-13 07:06:05

It's also popped up as a square ad on the right of the screen . Persistant little bugger.

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 20-May-13 08:27:43

Thanks. We're doing our best to isolate and nix it.

It was there before Log In just now and again at top of Talk Homepage once logged in, if that helps. smile

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 20-May-13 09:16:17

Thanks. Have just spotted it. We're on the case.

Just wanted to say that I just saw the 'Spied' ad.
I took a screen shot fwiw

TippiShagpile Tue 21-May-13 08:54:34

I had the spied advert this morning too.

Bloody annoying and it has the look of a virus type thing about it.

BigStickBIWI Tue 21-May-13 08:57:01

It's Ad Choices, isn't it? I hate the bloody things and I really wish Mumsnet weren't allowing them. I think it cheapens the site, as well as some of them looking really dodgy.

I have had that one on the top of my page several times today/yesterday as well, by the way.

WorraLiberty Wed 22-May-13 08:45:03

I had the '2 friends spied on you' ad again this morning at the top of the page.

Interestingly, it disappeared as soon as I logged in?

WorraLiberty Wed 22-May-13 08:45:48

Oh, it's on the right hand side of the page now.

BigStickBIWI Wed 22-May-13 08:47:36

Well I'm logged in, and it's at the top of my screen now, ironically at the top of this thread!

Pascha Wed 22-May-13 08:49:04

It was there for me a minute ago too, at the top of active convos.

derektheladyhamster Wed 22-May-13 08:50:41

It's there for me too now.

CherylTrole Wed 22-May-13 09:00:06

And me.

SaskiaRembrandtVampireHunter Wed 22-May-13 09:06:34

Me too.

coppertop Wed 22-May-13 09:29:53

It's on the right side of the page for me too now.

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 22-May-13 09:29:58

Oh no! Not sure how that's happened as we definitely blocked it last week.

We'll investigate.

RubyGates Wed 22-May-13 09:33:01

sad

UnChartered Wed 22-May-13 09:37:44

it's back, but i was able to block it

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 22-May-13 17:20:23

Where?

UnChartered Wed 22-May-13 17:53:20

it was on the top ad bar

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 22-May-13 17:54:55

OK, just so you know what's happening and don't think we're a lot of incompetent losers, it appears that, as fast as we block this ad, it appears again with a different "booking" name - until we block that one. <sigh>

We are on the case, though. Honest.

UnChartered Wed 22-May-13 18:04:38

the google ads are there as well, but they are real ads iygwim - the 'remove malware' ad is loud and proud again

cumfy Fri 24-May-13 02:01:10

<Helpfully hands Ruby some new waterproof (gasp) elastoplast to block the offending area of the screen> wink

RubyGates Fri 24-May-13 07:23:48

Thank you cumfy....smile
I took Nicholas' advice and I haven't seen it since grin
Although I feel that's cheating a bit.

NicholasTeakozy Fri 24-May-13 13:30:30

Hurrah!

CherylTrole Wed 05-Jun-13 09:05:21

Grrrr its back again.

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 05-Jun-13 15:09:33

CherylTrole

Grrrr its back again.

Oh no! The spying one?

BIWI Thu 06-Jun-13 08:25:56

Helen - I have the spying one again, at the top of my page

WorraLiberty Thu 06-Jun-13 08:53:07

Yes it's back for me too

At the top of the page on AIBU

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Thu 06-Jun-13 14:45:50

Right <puts BIG nixing gloves on> We'll sort ASAP.
