Equip me with a big red button. I am awake when you are not. Someone needs to woman these boards.

purrpurr Sun 03-Mar-13 01:47:10

I was just thinking, I hope they're all in bed. It's Mumsnet, not... I don't know, NHS Direct. Perhaps if members could voluntarily donate towards running costs if they so wished, Mumsnet would be able to put a chap on during the night. Or have an auto monitor in place so that if activity/new thread count exceeded X during x-y hours, they would be alerted and could come take a look.

lubeybooby Sun 03-Mar-13 01:47:13

I want a big red button too please

lubeybooby Sun 03-Mar-13 01:47:40

purrpurr, they are meant to have night cover apparently.

purrpurr Sun 03-Mar-13 01:49:19

Oh. That's a bit crap then :/

HazeltheMcWitch Sun 03-Mar-13 01:50:31

Me, I want a button too please!
I am practicing for who wants to be a millionaire, fastest finger first rounds.

Not really. But I am FAST.

(and bfing. And bored)

LoopDeLoops Sun 03-Mar-13 01:53:02

I don't think costs of a 'chap' need to be funded by members, purrpurr. I could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure there should be money set aside for the night shift.

lubeybooby Sun 03-Mar-13 01:54:16

especially when we seem to be such a target at the moment

HazeltheMcWitch Sun 03-Mar-13 01:55:08

a chap? hmm

purrpurr Sun 03-Mar-13 01:58:37

By chap I meant person. Would you rather I said chapette? I wouldn't.

purrpurr Sun 03-Mar-13 01:59:49

Clearly I'll retract the 'chap' remark before the entire website falls down under a sea of seething rage. It's just something I've learned from family, we've always called each other chaps, regardless of sex. Clearly we're all wrong and evil and must be burned, repeatedly.

lubeybooby Sun 03-Mar-13 02:01:00

I call everyone chaps too. Even my cats and daughter.

HazeltheMcWitch Sun 03-Mar-13 02:01:33

OOh. Bad Hazel.

DoubleLifeIsALifeHalved Sun 03-Mar-13 02:02:00

I suspect mumsnet earns enough to be able to provide some cover 24/7, perhaps OT didn't used to have the need to, but now... I think it's necessary.

DeepRedBetty Sun 03-Mar-13 02:02:44

grin don't worry purrpurr. I call everyone chaps. And I've only got dds.

Fancy a bit more reporting Hazel? I'm not even bothering with writing a post most of the time, just go straight to Report, then Hide, then do the next one when I get back to Active Convos.

DoubleLifeIsALifeHalved Sun 03-Mar-13 02:03:42

(I call people 'guys' which I catch myself doing when a woman frowns at me and have to apologise profusely... Whats a Gender neutral informal 'people here in this space' name?)

lubeybooby Sun 03-Mar-13 02:03:47

I'm just reporting and hiding too

HazeltheMcWitch Sun 03-Mar-13 02:09:36

Ooh, my logic* re posting and reporting is that it lets MNers know that it's been done, so they can do others.

*But it's 2.10am. I have not had much sleep. My logic has long gone!

HazeltheMcWitch Sun 03-Mar-13 02:10:27

Sorry re chaps. Seems it's jsut me then. I use 'guys' as gender-neutral, but to me, chaps seemed fairly male.

purrpurr Sun 03-Mar-13 02:12:20

Double, my 3-year old niece calls everyone in the room that she wants to play with her 'guys', so 'come on, guys! Let's dance!' means 'come on you lot, let's dance!' I don't feel that she's trying to imply anything by calling us guys. For her it's just a term for a collection of people.

God it's way too late in the day for this. Hazel, sorry for flying off the handle. I seem to have been coughing and coughing and coughing for DAYS and I am absolutely up the wall, trying to cough around a 7-month bump is practically impossible as it is. Whine. Apologies.

I use the term 'chaps' gender-neutrally too. In a WWII RAF fighter-pilot voice, usually. (Think Armstrong and Miller sketches. Isn't it.)

HazeltheMcWitch Sun 03-Mar-13 02:15:33

Oi - I apologised first!
Coughing with bump? Nightmare.

DoubleLifeIsALifeHalved Sun 03-Mar-13 02:16:11

I am channelling a 3 yr old then smile

HazeltheMcWitch Sun 03-Mar-13 02:16:12

And even that sounded fight. I meant- I apologised first, as I was wrong.

HazeltheMcWitch Sun 03-Mar-13 02:16:30

fight fighty

And can I have a big red button too, pretty please? I'm insomniac and often up at this sort of hour ...
<hopeful, but knows there's no chance really grin>

Tortington Sun 03-Mar-13 02:18:16

there defo needs to be a 'limited suspension until mn towers can assess it button' manned by trust worthy mods

Tortington Sun 03-Mar-13 02:19:58

not me - i hasten to add, i like to hide lots of threads as it makes my screen look cluttered, Its like cleaning. so i might clean anything boring - which is mostly everything not worth reporting tBH

purrpurr Sun 03-Mar-13 02:22:11

WhereYouLeftIt, that's exactly it! I wonder if that's where my lot got it from, too.
Hazel, didn't sound fighty to me, definitely not.

Thumbwitch Sun 03-Mar-13 02:23:40

SPAMBOTS A-GOGO!
I've an idea - not necessarily a good one - can we have a Report button (like there is a Hide button) on the Active Conversations list? that would be so good - then we could just all hit Report without ever having to open the stupid spambot threads.

Or alternatively, if you can find a way to block the spambots.

And now I've read the rest of the thread and it appears to be a bit of a non-fighty fight about chaps and guys.
I use both gender-neutrally but have tended away from guys recently after being frowned at quite a lot.
'People' doesn't go down well, either, it seems. <sigh>
So now I just use folks, or Oi you lot.

purrpurr Sun 03-Mar-13 02:24:37

Custardo, you could develop a Mumsnet Prime site, where anything deemed boring or needlessly inflammatory (e.g. How do I tell my son that pink things are only for girls?) is hidden, thus saving members and the NHS a fortune, where otherwise members would've keeled over with high blood pressure.

KatieMiddleton Sun 03-Mar-13 02:25:19

Folks is a good option when chaps and guys won't do.

I can't bring myself to actually say it, but will type it.

<yes please to big red button. Happy to operate in exchange for stoking my meglomaniac tendencies>

Thumbwitch Sun 03-Mar-13 02:29:00

Oh purrpurr - that thread's ok, almost everyone is giving the OP a bit of a "sort-out" re her backward thinking wink

DeepRedBetty Sun 03-Mar-13 02:30:22

The only trouble with a 'Report' button like the 'Hide' button is that so often the title of a thread is only a faint clue to what lies within.

Although I'd love an early warning flag about DM link in OP!

DoubleLifeIsALifeHalved Sun 03-Mar-13 02:31:39

Folks it is ... Though sounds a little well folksy smile

Hummm, debates merits of 'humans' or 'homo sapiens' as a chirpy inclusive pronoun... Catchy? Hum, no!

Revival of 'ladles and jellyspoons' perhaps?

Am trying to satisfy the urge to post whilst hiding on here, but tis to no avail, I feel Mumsnet is a little soiled by bots and hate trolls, and I'll have to do something else instead whilst awaiting sleep. What did I DO before Mumsnet though? (sobs)

(shambles off into the night)

purrpurr Sun 03-Mar-13 02:32:06

Thumbwitch, I nearly expired just looking at it in the Active Conversations list, I didn't dare go near it! Glad to hear the sanity of Mumsnet has prevailed once again.

purrpurr Sun 03-Mar-13 02:33:59

Double, nooooo, come back. It's a decent place to hide, there might be lukewarm coffee somewhere. One of the other threads about tonight's spamming mentions donuts though... Mmmm donuts. Or, in my case, mmm, several hours of heartburn, mainlining Gaviscon and crying... God I need to be put down. More tea vicar! <hobbles off>

KatieMiddleton Sun 03-Mar-13 02:37:12

I can't decide what's more annoying: gazillions of spambot posts or the half a gazillion site stuff threads moaning about them. When you throw in the mra trolls it is all a bit too messy out there for my liking angry

Tortington Sun 03-Mar-13 02:39:51

just after my cleaning comment, millions of bots - my screen is ver untidy and i'ts making me weak at the knees, i might faint. i mist faint i tell ya. i cant take all the clutter. its untidy - MN is untidy!!

purrpurr Sun 03-Mar-13 02:40:30

Totally agreed, proper mess. Really liking the multi-hide suggestion by a previous commenter - to be able to choose Hide from the Active Conversations page, with that to reload the page with a tick box alongside each thread, so the user can choose to Hide several threads in one go.

purrpurr Sun 03-Mar-13 02:41:32

Custardo, cripes, get yesen a wee dram of something to take the edge off!

AmberLeaf Sun 03-Mar-13 02:41:46

I wish you could hide them without having to open them, would be a lot quicker.

I thought someone did the night shift?

Hazel the only trouble with posting then reporting is your post keeps them bumped up on active conversations. we need to post on other normal threads to banish the spam from active.

Why am I awake anyway? insomnia is shit.

DoubleLifeIsALifeHalved Sun 03-Mar-13 02:42:10

Oh purr purr, you sound poorly, and with bump coughing is hideous, poor you! Am annoyed that Active Conversations is totally filled with spam & hate, so am going to try radio and a darkened room and see if that sends me off to sleep before my little coughing blighter wakes up again!

Ds is a definite 'misery loves company' boy and when he wakes up coughing cries 'make me better' in distraught tones and the only thing I can do is to stroke him asleep sitting up (lying on me) so then my arm goes to sleep. As soon as I lower his head to pillow the cough creeps back. Ooof!

Coughing over a bump is alot worse though, much sympathy!

KatieMiddleton Sun 03-Mar-13 02:42:58

I know what you mean Custy. it's making me a bit anxious all the littering. I've been hiding them but I can't tap fast enough.

AmberLeaf Sun 03-Mar-13 02:44:17

I wish you could hide them without having to open them, would be a lot quicker.

Chorusforpoormortals Sun 03-Mar-13 02:44:29

Has Towers replied to any of the reports/site stuff threads yet?

Tortington Sun 03-Mar-13 02:45:02

You can amber - you don't have to open them there should be a hide buton underneath the thread - im in classic view though.

yes Katie, littering it is you hit the nail on the head

KatieMiddleton Sun 03-Mar-13 02:45:40

You can hide without opening. Customise your settings so a little - button shows on active convos.

ThePathanKhansAmnesiac Sun 03-Mar-13 02:46:12

Can I take refuge here? It,s so scary out there.
Where are mnhq?
I might post mitmoo just to see what happens.

purrpurr Sun 03-Mar-13 02:46:13

God I think if I had a small one whimpering 'make me better' at me I'd probably start crying myself. Hope the radio + darkened room works for you smile

purrpurr Sun 03-Mar-13 02:53:03

Custardo and Katie - many thanks for the tip, customised so I can choose to Hide from the Active Conversations view. Now all clean and tidy.

DoubleLifeIsALifeHalved Sun 03-Mar-13 02:58:22

It's the demanding yet heartbroken tone that gets me... I feel like a monster because I can't actually make it instantly better, I'm letting the side down as invincible and all powerful mummy!

(and when he says 'kiss it better!' in the same choking howling tones... Then cries wretchedly when the kiss doesnt work... Oh I feel terrible!)

Earlybird Sun 03-Mar-13 02:59:22

Spam threads are appearing faster than I can hide them.

Where is Tech or someone from MNHQ? Didn't we establish the other night that Tech is based in America? Wish he/she would appear soon and get to work.

lubeybooby Sun 03-Mar-13 03:01:15

This is just ridiculous now. I went to the loo now there are too many to hide/report. ffs.

Several men I know call me 'mate'

I never know whether to be pleased or offended grin

I think whoever's on night shift has retreated to the panic room with gin

Grockle Sun 03-Mar-13 03:04:00

Wow, it's crazy out there. confused

WhatSheSaid Sun 03-Mar-13 03:06:58

It is a bit crazy. Virtually every single thread in Active Convos.

Grockle are you from Hampshire? My dh is the only person I have heard using that word, he's from the New Forest.

purrpurr Sun 03-Mar-13 03:09:04

Double, stop, you're putting me off! I'm far too soft for this parenting lark, I'll go mad! I already give up my comfy seat for the cat if she wants it, I'm that much of a softie/weirdo. There's no hope.

There should be a panic line for Mumsnet. It's just really irritating until the site falls over. I wouldn't want to be responsible for leaving it until it got to that.

SeymoreInOz Sun 03-Mar-13 03:11:23

Give me the big red button! The 11 hour time difference is perfect surely? Also I have a "high needs" baby so I don't get out ever much.

AmberLeaf Sun 03-Mar-13 03:11:42

Ok, Im trying to access the settings bit, Ive gone into 'my mumsnet' but I cant find where to change it so I can hide from the active convo list?

Help!

purrpurr Sun 03-Mar-13 03:14:18

Abmber, so in the Talk: Customise page, go down to Other Options, within that section you'll find an option for showing Hide on Active Conversations.

purrpurr Sun 03-Mar-13 03:15:56

Tis this option: Put "hide" link on Active Conversations? (hide selected threads from Talk):
Should be set to No as default, just change to Yes

why not have the international mumsnetters hold down the fort? just for Amanda deleting?

AmberLeaf Sun 03-Mar-13 03:19:06

Thank you purrpurr

ClayDavis Sun 03-Mar-13 03:20:14

And they've found site stuff.

Amanda- spam

Chorusforpoormortals Sun 03-Mar-13 03:21:38

They are here now. Why has no one got back to us?

LoopDeLoops Sun 03-Mar-13 06:22:26

All OK in here?

nannynick Sun 03-Mar-13 07:09:44

Spammer is busy this morning, it's 7am UK time, any MNHQ people around to shutdown the spammers account?
Rawrable

gordonpym Sun 03-Mar-13 08:24:08

Should we be worried and stock on milk, tea and biscuits? Are we under attack?

Poor mn! As I said on another thread, it's like the magic porridge pot!
