Can we be allowed to post 'oh do fuck off' in certain circumstances. Like when people post 'is that really all you have to worry about?'

Pagwatch Mon 11-Feb-13 10:51:41

Could we not have one each. Like a waiver.

NoelHeadbands Mon 11-Feb-13 10:52:32

Oh do fuck off Pagwatch

NoelHeadbands Mon 11-Feb-13 10:53:02

Dammit I didn't see the one each bit. Just wasted mine now

Panzee Mon 11-Feb-13 10:53:12

Can the answer to your question be "yes, yes it is."? grin

Pagwatch Mon 11-Feb-13 10:54:50

Mwahahahaha NoelHeadbands

Frankly I feel sorry for you children

1 per day? or 1 per thread?

Because I think I may go over my limit if its just 1 grin

and yes, that is all I have to worry about. I live an enchanted life.

NoelHeadbands Mon 11-Feb-13 10:58:39

grin that certainly is one of the phrases where 'oh do fuck off' should be the accepted, nay ONLY response ...

pictish Mon 11-Feb-13 11:01:22

I agree. I think telling someone to fuck off is ok. I think it should be allowed. I can handle being tol to fuck off...sometimes I deserve it.

LtEveDallas Mon 11-Feb-13 11:02:27

One per thread, definately. One per day, acceptable. One per week - just not enough.

VenusRising Mon 11-Feb-13 11:03:46

You could do it stealth stylee: ODFO

Can we have an "Oh do fuck off dear" too, for that little extra je ne sais quoi that means so much? grin

FrankWippery Mon 11-Feb-13 11:06:22

One per thread. It has to be, anything less would be an awful bore and result in much kicking of imaginary kittens.

Pagwatch Mon 11-Feb-13 11:06:44

One per thread. Def.

I am also getting irritated by an increasing number of very PA and patronising

'gosh, you are getting stressed. Why don't you put your energy into something else. <head tilt>'

Fuck off. I am just posting like you are. If its unimportant then why are you posting every three minutes you absoloutely scrotum.

LtEveDallas Mon 11-Feb-13 11:11:01

If its unimportant then why are you posting every three minutes you absoloutely scrotum

Are you OK Pag? <<head tilt>>

Pagwatch Mon 11-Feb-13 11:12:35

I'm fine. Although I have no notion what an absoloutely scrotum is.

It's as if my insult generator is playing up.

<lies down>

FrankWippery Mon 11-Feb-13 11:14:09

<passes gin>

LtEveDallas Mon 11-Feb-13 11:15:07

Ahhh, I have it on good authority that if you let out a few "Fucking Fuckers Fuck the Fuck Off" it will reset...

Pagwatch Mon 11-Feb-13 11:17:50

Having a fuck off allowance would work.
You could plop them regularly or save them up for a fuckofffest.

Pagwatch Mon 11-Feb-13 11:21:02

Yes. Dalek. Or possibly Trevor McDonald.

Tee2072 Mon 11-Feb-13 11:25:12

I think it's time for me to get my placard out:

What do we want?
24 hours of allowing any and all Personal Attacks.
Why do we want it?
Because sometimes you have to call a cunt a cunt and tell them to fuck off.
When do we want it?
As soon as fucking possible!

Too long?

Who is with me?

::marches in a circle shouting by herself::
::leaves for school run so won't see agreement or otherwise for ages::

LtEveDallas Mon 11-Feb-13 11:25:39

Oh no, my "Oh do Fuck Off" needs to be said by Maureen Lipman or Penelope Keith. With a little x at the end for a total PA mindfuck.

seeker Mon 11-Feb-13 11:27:33

Oh yes please! How about 1 an month?

Pagwatch Mon 11-Feb-13 11:28:31

In fairness it could be more pithy Tee, but I like the energy.

It would have to be Penelope Keith as Margot. Not the wishy washy one from the series where she lived in an outbuilding of her old home.
<brains gone>
<one more thing to worry about>

catladycourtney1 Mon 11-Feb-13 11:30:50

I think the acronym idea is a good one. In fact I think "Odfod" should be a word in it's own right.

Hullygully Mon 11-Feb-13 11:30:54

I think there is a case to be made for ODFO not being a personal attack. Surely it is a suggestion/request/command?

Hullygully Mon 11-Feb-13 11:31:36

YY I feel that a new acronym is gestating nicely.

well done paggy

tinkletinklestar Mon 11-Feb-13 11:33:44

Currently having a oh do fuck off moment. ....

CartedOff Mon 11-Feb-13 11:34:00

I think people should be allowed them when the "Gosh well you're not agreeing with me and immediately taking my advice so I guess you didn't want to know anyone's opinion at all best of luck to you hmm" responses come along in AIBU.

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

Pagwatch Mon 11-Feb-13 11:36:02

Yes. To the Manor Born. Thank you!

ODFOD works. The 'dear' is perfect.

FrankWippery Mon 11-Feb-13 11:43:22

It will give me enormous pleasure to sprinkle this about. Liberally in some cases.

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

Trills Mon 11-Feb-13 11:51:50

Shouldn't this be in Site Stuff?

<awaits "oh fuck off" as a reply>

FeckOffCup Mon 11-Feb-13 12:12:52

I always find it ironic that people bother to post "oh really OP do you have nothing better to do/worry about" when they clearly have nothing better to do themselves than whinge on other people's thread that it's not "important" enough for their liking. They deserve a hearty ODFOD grin.

Pagwatch Mon 11-Feb-13 12:14:20

Yes it should.
I always forget about site stuff for some reason.
Sorry Trills. Dear.

MERLYPUSS Mon 11-Feb-13 12:26:51

Could we not have a smiley that when you type [ODFOD] it magically appears? I have to say, I will write to the OED for Odfod to be listed though.

FrankWippery Mon 11-Feb-13 12:35:12

Arf Beer, now that would be a great idea!

AnyFucker Mon 11-Feb-13 12:38:43

I got deleted the other day for saying "why don't you piss off" (in response to a GF)

Seems perfectly reasonable to me confused

Pandemoniaa Mon 11-Feb-13 12:40:20

Like Goady Fucker, ODFOD should also have a smiley thing. Although in many circumstances, the two are not mutually exclusive.

FrankWippery Mon 11-Feb-13 12:41:45

I got deleted for saying 'you sound like' last week, so I'm guessing the rule books are being rewritten again.

SPsFanjoHasABlingingVajazzle Mon 11-Feb-13 12:44:28

ODFOD is great!

An allowance should be made. If you use acronyms then you should be able to say anything like FOYT

You could say anything grin

Pandemoniaa Mon 11-Feb-13 12:48:29

I got deleted last week for suggesting someone was lacking in charm. I did not make this claim without clear evidence to back up my case but hey ho. Oh for an acronym that would slip under the net.

YouBrokeMySmoulder Mon 11-Feb-13 12:50:19

I would like a smiley for I Dont Give a Shiny Shit. Or IDGASS.

HerrenaHarridan Mon 11-Feb-13 13:01:59

Odfod... Fucking brilliant

I can't believe it actually made me lol I thought that was just an expression because ha ha ha sounds so sarcastic.

Tee2072 Mon 11-Feb-13 13:03:47

I just used ODFOD on a thread...

mrsjay Mon 11-Feb-13 13:06:54

I said it once and got my bottom smacked from mumsnet and post deleted, I just said oh do fuck off the post just required no other words grin

Pascha Mon 11-Feb-13 13:07:54

ODFOD. Yes. A smiling smiley with a head tilt would be the perfect emoticon to accompany it.

SPsFanjoHasABlingingVajazzle Mon 11-Feb-13 13:08:12

Tee I saw it. Shes asking what it means grin

TheOriginalLadyFT Mon 11-Feb-13 13:12:55

ODFOD and IDGASS yes to both

Someone called me 'love' in a delightfully patronising way on a thread yesterday - the whole hmm response just doesn't cut it, whereas I was certainly saying ODFOD mentally - and now I have the perfect acronym for those posters

Pascha Mon 11-Feb-13 13:13:27

How about 'ODFO' thanks

Oh no, hang on, I am not a sweary type. Could I have a non sweary one?

Pascha Mon 11-Feb-13 13:20:57

You could start off OD and end it your own way Sparkling.

ODGA - oh do go away
ODGANDATYHRT - oh do go away now dear and take your HRT
ODFSC -oh do find some compassion
ODA - oh do admit! wink

BeCool Mon 11-Feb-13 13:35:22

When I was fairly new to MN (a million usernames ago now) I posted "Oh do fuck off" to a poster who was being a right mouthy horrible caaawwwwww! Then I fled the thread and was to "scared" to go back and face any music or see if I was deleted.

I've grown some since then smile

Loving ODFO - could put that to good use.

(Still disappointed HRWT (haven't read whole thread) never caught on)

KateSMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 11-Feb-13 16:44:31

'Lo everyone,

We're going to move this to site stuff in a mo, in the spirit of tidiness.

While we're "here", we should say that posting "ODFOD" on a thread is tantamount to telling someone to fuck off, and would be deletable.

We're tempted to hijack this thread into a fascinating discussion on semiotics and textual intention....but we won't smile

Trills Mon 11-Feb-13 16:46:10

Oh do go ahead on Kate S, textual intention sounds fascinating. Do they give you quizzes before you are allowed the big red button?

YouBrokeMySmoulder Mon 11-Feb-13 16:48:15

But what about my shiny shit HQ? Is that to be disallowed as well?

KatieMiddleton Mon 11-Feb-13 16:52:51

I may just post random letters on a thread without explanation.

Can't be deleted for being illiterate surely?

KatieMiddleton Mon 11-Feb-13 16:53:39

For example

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

Hullygully Mon 11-Feb-13 16:56:22

Oh the hours of fun in the MN court that looms before us

Pagwatch Mon 11-Feb-13 17:02:38

"But what about my shiny shit MNHQ?" is a phrase that will linger in the memory

Pascha Mon 11-Feb-13 17:05:17

semiotics and textual intention?

There's a friday night drunkards mistyping thread if ever I saw one.

FlouncingMintyy Mon 11-Feb-13 17:09:04

Thing is, KateSMumsnet, that sometimes there really is absolutely nothing else to be said other than "Oh do fuck off!". You know, when a poster is being an utter arse. What are we supposed to say to those numpties?

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 11-Feb-13 17:14:45

Thing is, KateSMumsnet, that sometimes there really is absolutely nothing else to be said other than "Oh do fuck off!". You know, when a poster is being an utter arse. What are we supposed to say to those numpties?

Tumbleweed is usually incredibly vexing it you're an utter arse.

Interestingly, a huge wall of silence often provokes them to move on from utter arsiness into bannable offences.

<useful hint>

I think that's where my 'pile of poo with flies round it' emoticon would be just the ticket. 'You are talking poo No swearing. smile

nickelbabe Mon 11-Feb-13 17:16:15

I just had to say "oh do fuck off" to an automated phonecall then.

I want an ODFOD too.

nickelbabe Mon 11-Feb-13 17:16:52

Sparkling - perfect smile

I have one on my Sky emails nickel. Comes in handy to complainy e-mails to utility companies. grin

Friendly smiley poo emoticon smile For when they are just talking a bit of poo.

Absy Mon 11-Feb-13 17:23:25

Please Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease can we do this? And in our personal lives as well?

Pag asked. She's the voice of reason on MN. Sometimes. I mean, she's a bit mardy at the moment but otherwise she's alright.

RustyBear Mon 11-Feb-13 17:26:08

When I tried to type ODFOD, my iPad tried to autocorrect it to Oxford. Maybe we could use that as a non-deletable code....

nickelbabe Mon 11-Feb-13 17:26:39

shhh, Rusty, they'll be onto you!

YouBrokeMySmoulder Mon 11-Feb-13 17:27:50

YouBrokeMySmoulder Mon 11-Feb-13 17:32:26

But its sooo glittery. So a shit with a silver lining.

nickelbabe Mon 11-Feb-13 20:15:16

tsc oh they like
swearing - one of the best things about being an adult. they just don't like personal attacks.
knobber wink

TigerFeet Mon 11-Feb-13 20:56:15

I had shiny shit once, I have edible glitter that just passes straight through. Last time I discussed it on here it made the talk roundup.

ODFOD needs a PA smile , possibly on the next line for added effect thusly:

oh do fuck off dear

or can we just have a [headtilt]? A [headtilt] isn't a personal attack, PA or otherwise, it's expressing genuine concern for a poster's wellbeing.

HerrenaHarridan Mon 11-Feb-13 21:59:54

Please, please, please can we have the smiley poo emoticon.

greencolorpack Mon 11-Feb-13 22:02:31

No no no no.

It can be horribly upsetting being told on the Internet to F off. And once one popular poster says it everyone else feels free to pile in. It can be horrible being the only one facing an angry gang swearing and laughing at you and .... Ugh.

Just no.

magimedi Mon 11-Feb-13 22:52:13

I've managed to post YAAC & it has lasted for at least 4 hours.

If any one tells me to fuck off - it's no big deal at all. It's only rock & roll internet life. If you can't take the heat - get outta the kitchen.

Pagwatch Tue 12-Feb-13 08:21:21

It is also pretty upsetting to post about a problem and have one utter twat post 'hmm is that is all you have to worry about op?'

I keep patiently posting 'the op may have many things to worry about but this is what she is talking about just now' but fuck off is sometimes a more apt response to such a spiteful posting.

It is snide and smug and sneery. All my least favourite s words.
(except shiny shit. Of course)

greencolorpack Tue 12-Feb-13 08:34:23

I know what you mean Pagwatch I don't like that either. But it would be abused by people who just like the idea of swearing at people.

One persons hearty riposte is another persons horribly upsetting insult. If one person posts F off and then thirty of their chums join in you've got a bloodbath on your hands. I know I sound melodramatic but this happened to me and I still haven't got over it ten years on. It's worst if you have managed to trust the site to be full of well meaning friends and suddenly you realise you are just today's plaything to be ripped up and spat out.

Pagwatch Tue 12-Feb-13 08:40:01

I'm sorry that happened to you green.

Fwiw I don't think an unwarranted attack would be supported by 'chums' on here - certainly not without some considerable dissent.

But I think you are slightly missing my point which is that in terms of being upsetting and rude -
'I feel sorry for your children' or 'is that all you have to worry about' are just as bad as fuck off. I think 'I feel sorry for your children' is about the lowest thing you can post on here. Yet people can post that with impunity.

I think telling those types to fuck off would be thoroughly cathartic.

Chubfuddler Tue 12-Feb-13 08:41:00

Is fuck off a personal attack? I don't see how. It's not an attack on someone's character. It's not personally insulting. It's sweary but we do that here.

I think we should either be allowed to say oh do fuck off when merited or......

We need a hide poster button

Pagwatch Tue 12-Feb-13 08:41:27

Also. I think you are taking the thread slightly more seriously than it actually is.

Chubfuddler Tue 12-Feb-13 08:42:13

I feel sorry for your children is defo a personal attack. A really nasty one. That stands all the time.

greencolorpack Tue 12-Feb-13 08:43:04

Yes, I feel sorry for your children is a low blow and far worse than swearing. So is people finding out your ambitions and dreams and then saying "she would make a terrible... (teacher, nurse etc)" does that Happen here? I'm glad if the dog pile thing doesn't happen here. I have avoided controversy on this site so don't tend to read the "bunfight" threads much. I don't want to be next.

Pagwatch Tue 12-Feb-13 08:46:53

I think piling in does happen. It is most likely on aibu. But not sort of concerted attacks. It tends to be that a few people post 'you are being ridiculous' and then a bunch of arses start adding more and more rude comments.

It's grim but it doesn't happen that much.

Avoiding aibu is a good tip. You can hide the whole topic.

usualsuspect Tue 12-Feb-13 08:49:06

Pile ins do happen on here, but usually someone will come on and try and calm it down, and give the OP some support.

greencolorpack Tue 12-Feb-13 08:50:20

I might read the first page and then lose interest. I only post uncontroversially. I'm amazed sometimes by the amount of posters who will tell a complete stranger to ditch their bastard dh or whatever! talk about overstepping the mark!

Sorry if I am taking this too seriously.

Pagwatch Tue 12-Feb-13 09:03:25

It's a pretty robust website. I think that's why lots of us like it though.
And tbh sometimes women should ditch the bastard.

Maryz Tue 12-Feb-13 09:30:37

I have only just seen this thread (how did I miss it?) and I would just like to say that I really do like KateS. I haven't seen her around an awful lot, but I think that she really is joining in with the spirit of the site [arf].

I saw an upset person posting the other day and the very first reply was "have my first biscuit - which was annoying for two reasons, firstly it was unnecessary and secondly it was a lie - she has biscuited people a lot hmm.

I really wanted to tell her to FO.

RandallPinkFloyd Tue 12-Feb-13 11:37:54

Lol at disingenuous biscuiting shenanigans!

Is it wrong that I read ODFOD as a word?
Like AIBU = aye-boo
ODFOD = odd-fodd

Maryz Tue 12-Feb-13 11:42:57

That's a good idea.

I will post "Some folks are very odd-fodd" when I mean OhDoFuckOffDearie

RandallPinkFloyd Tue 12-Feb-13 11:50:46

RowanMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 12-Feb-13 12:30:24

That's a good idea.

I will post "Some folks are very odd-fodd" when I mean OhDoFuckOffDearie

We can read this thread, you know. <imperious face> <adds 'odd-fod' to klaxon list>

RandallPinkFloyd Tue 12-Feb-13 13:31:13

Busted blush

JesusInTheCabbageVan Tue 12-Feb-13 13:32:41

I called someone a cunt on a thread once and didn't get caught. Ner ner ner ner ner.

greencolorpack Tue 12-Feb-13 13:33:00

I find people posting "Charming!" (sarcastic face icon) quite pass agg. And one for the list of things people should be allowed to swear about. If I did think we should be allowed which I don't.

JesusInTheCabbageVan Tue 12-Feb-13 13:40:32

Have we had "You sound nice" yet? That always winds me up.

Why can't we odd-fodd? That's not actually an attack is it?

Am I not allowed to say "oh do run along now dearie?" or "don't you have something you should be doing?"

Because that's the same meaning, with less swearing. And its not so far from "don't you have anything else to worry about", either.

GetOrf Tue 12-Feb-13 14:00:52

How did you manage not to be deleted for calling someone a cunt when I got busted for calling some disingenuous and shit-for-brains (two different occasions).

Tee2072 Tue 12-Feb-13 14:09:41

Because no one reported the 'cunt' I would imagine, Orf.

I think the deletion is worth it sometimes to call a cunt a cunt.

Maryz Tue 12-Feb-13 14:11:32

DRAND would be good.

It depends on whether they notice or some fucker reports you.

No-one reported my "this really oozes life lessons" the other day.

<determinedly ignores Rowan>

nickelbabe Tue 12-Feb-13 15:25:48

See, that's what I said!
I said "don't put it on here because they'll know"
no one ever listens to me.

(okay, i actually put "shhh, rusty they'll be onto you")

Maryz Tue 12-Feb-13 15:37:10

Sadly, I think they know most of our tricks by now.

It's 1984 all over again.d With a room 101 full of goaders and fuckwits.

SarahStratton Tue 12-Feb-13 19:09:16

But what if we mean to put odd-bod, only get it wrong? shock

<looks innocent>

Tee2072 Tue 12-Feb-13 19:55:33

Oooh, nice try Stratters!

You okay? ::head tilt:: Haven't seen you around.

SarahStratton Tue 12-Feb-13 20:21:06

Yep, been decorating the basement, and the hall/stairs/landings. I am inordinately proud of the basement floor wot I laid myself. Going to do the sitting room next.

Tee2072 Tue 12-Feb-13 20:30:20

Hark at you! Decorating and doing it without running to MN. I am impressed.

AmberLeaf Tue 12-Feb-13 21:13:55

I got deleted the other day for saying 'you can fuck off with your [insert patronising comment]

I wasn't even telling the poster to fuck off as such.

I also thought that fuck off was allowed? its not a personal attack as such, its more of an instruction.

Maryz Tue 12-Feb-13 21:23:59

Wow, a floor, you say?

I haven't mastered painting behind the cupboards yet.

I also think it's an instruction - Oh do fuck off/Oh do go away, same difference, surely? Just as X is a cunt isn't a personal attack, it's a descriptive statement.

AmberLeaf Tue 12-Feb-13 21:27:53

Yes, 'fuck off' is simply 'go away' but with swearing.

So if swearing is allowed as a rule, we technically should be allowed to tell someone to fuck off.

juneybean Tue 12-Feb-13 21:29:08

Are we not allowed to say "fuck off" how disappointing.

Maryz Tue 12-Feb-13 21:38:02

<loving the semantics here grin>

SarahStratton Tue 12-Feb-13 21:44:02

Floor was great fun. Like a massive sticky jigsaw.

I know it's an old chestnut, but MN has changed. I thought it was me, and maybe i was getting tired of it, but DD (who lurks a fair bit) said today that it wasn't fun any more. And it's not, it feels like being in the middle of some oh so polite mummy mafia war. It's so subliminally goady and bitchy on here now, nobody's allowed to piss about without some self indulgent twat coming along and whining about it. And the reporting is out of hand.

Cba any more tbh.

Maryz Tue 12-Feb-13 21:46:38

Yes you are right about it changing.

I tend to have days when I'm stuck at home and I get drawn into threads. And I find the teenage section very comforting these days. But I really should cut down, it's not helping my blood pressure at all.

There seems to be an undercurrent in so many threads that I simply don't understand. It's a bit like going into school knowing everyone else has been at a party the day before that you weren't at, so you don't know the "rules" and you don't know who has fallen out with, or fallen in love with, who. Very confused.

AmberLeaf Tue 12-Feb-13 21:53:28

So, 'fuck off' is an instruction not an insult, that makes sense to me.

What do you say to that then MNHQ?

<would love them to say fuck off> grin

Maryz Tue 12-Feb-13 21:55:45

Oh, no, Amber, you can't say Fuck Off. That is rood. And a command. You have to say "Oh do fuck off" in a friendly non-confrontational helpful way smile.

juneybean Tue 12-Feb-13 22:17:34

Could you fuck off?

usualsuspect Tue 12-Feb-13 22:20:34

Any chance you could fuck off?

AmberLeaf Tue 12-Feb-13 22:21:45

Fuck off please?

More of a request?

AmberLeaf Tue 12-Feb-13 22:22:42

A polite request at that.

Maryz Tue 12-Feb-13 22:24:38

Would you mind terribly fucking off (said in Queen-like accent)?

SarahStratton Tue 12-Feb-13 22:33:22

One would appreciate you vacating the premises?

Maryz Tue 12-Feb-13 23:09:10

Or even "one would appreciate you fucking the fuck off"? Let's not be too polite.

Tee2072 Wed 13-Feb-13 09:23:55

I will finally agree it's changed.

But that's the nature of online forums. They aren't static. If they were, they would die.

When it's changed too much, I'll move on. Not any time soon, though.

nickelbabe Wed 13-Feb-13 10:55:09

yes, it has changed.

it seems to have become a lot more moderated than it used to be.

there are some sensitive souls on here.
why can't MNHQ send the "yes, dear, sometimes adults swear and that's just what you'll have to accept" email in reply to "miss! miss! she's picking on me! Miss! she called me a cunt!" reports like they used to?

Tee2072 Wed 13-Feb-13 12:20:34

That is a very good question, nickel.

KateSMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 13-Feb-13 15:40:21

In the wise words of Axel Rose, "nothing last for ever, even No-November rain"

MN is a constantly evolving ever changing beast, but that makes it exciting don't you think?

Fwiw, if people complain about bad language in general we send a "yes we allow swearing on Mumsnet" type mail.

We know perhaps some of you could deal with being called a cunt, or being told to fuck off. But at the risk of sounding like a total wuss, it just isn't nice.

Imagine you were having a conversation about an issue that was causing you a lot of upset. Then someone strides over and says "I heard what you said, and I think you're being a cunt".

We are playing devils avocado here, as obviously Mumsnet is as open forum, but we like to maintain a facade of decorum.
