Annoying gap/Wowcher

On some threads I get a huuuuuuge gap between the thread title and the first post. There is also a one line advert for wowcher just above the first post. Is it just an annoying ad not working or my problem?

ChristianGreyIsAJackass Mon 04-Feb-13 06:53:50

I dont have it at the moment, but it happens a lot, i also get it in my active convos list, massive blank screen until you scroll down

Allalonenow Mon 04-Feb-13 06:54:36

I'm getting this also, what to do?

FruOla Mon 04-Feb-13 06:55:38

Same for me Tiggs. In fact the gap was so huuuge that I thought all the posts had completely disappeared and that MN was broken again.

CloudsAway Mon 04-Feb-13 07:06:33

yes just got that this morning! Very very annoying.

FruOla Mon 04-Feb-13 07:07:24

I meant to add, that annoying ad for Wowcher is on all of those threads with the big gap for me too.

ClaimedByMe Mon 04-Feb-13 07:11:25

I've got this too, I just thought it was because I was on the iPad!

TiggyD Mon 04-Feb-13 07:30:44

Seems like a legal advert that's gone wrong. MNHQ techy person will have to stay sober today.

RubyGates Mon 04-Feb-13 07:41:11

Please, please make it go away. I'm on a bog standard MacBook, using Safari.

lubeybooby Mon 04-Feb-13 07:44:18

same here. Please make it go away MNHQ

lubeybooby Mon 04-Feb-13 07:44:53

Oh and I'm on windows 7 using firefox

Tee2072 Mon 04-Feb-13 07:50:04

Definitely the Wowcher ad.

LIZS Mon 04-Feb-13 08:00:38

Keep having to scroll down to read posts

Osmiornica Mon 04-Feb-13 08:08:50

Yes, I'm getting this too. It's very annoying.

I have this too, very annoying.

ticolac Mon 04-Feb-13 08:53:30

Me too, on iPad

Primrose123 Mon 04-Feb-13 08:55:54

I've just had it too.

Trills Mon 04-Feb-13 09:10:40

Yep.

Chrome, Windows 7 laptop, etc.

Me too, Mac and Safari. Very annoying.

HeathRobinson Mon 04-Feb-13 09:26:25

Yep, me too.

Allice Mon 04-Feb-13 09:28:33

Me too, on Google Chrome, thought that Mumsnet was broke and panicked that I'd have to do housework!

RedJeans Mon 04-Feb-13 09:29:16

Get google chrome and then the app called AdBlocker!! Gets rid of all advertising on websites, its amazing! I dont have any ads on the side or top of the display anymore

I do too on Chrome on a mac, it's so annoying.

Artemis206 Mon 04-Feb-13 09:31:22

Same here, it's happening mainly on chat threads and I'm on an iPad.

HazeltheMcWitch Mon 04-Feb-13 09:32:00

It's also messing up bookmarks - you go to your spot, then it suddenly lurches when the gap appears. Grrr.

Re chrome - is it ok on a mac?

Trills Mon 04-Feb-13 09:33:32

It might relate to the length of the thread title...

RedJeans Mon 04-Feb-13 09:33:43

Yep, I've got chrome on a mac

Yep what's that about? It's been bugging me today! (I'm on a laptop, using Opera) The ads down the side are bad enough, but big ads under the thread title might be enough to push me over the edge today <easily irritated and looking for a reason to go cold turkey wrt MN>

HazeltheMcWitch Mon 04-Feb-13 09:38:24

(thanks RedJeans. And everybodysang, who psychically answered question before I'd even posed it!)

caramelwaffle Mon 04-Feb-13 09:39:09

Me also.

Did an extensive test and found it only did it on "chat" threads for me.

RedJeans Mon 04-Feb-13 09:43:19

No problem! Honestly, couldn't recommend AdBlock enough, absolutely changed my experience of the internet completely for the better, haha! Never realised quite how annoying adverts were before. And it blocks popups too

kim147 Mon 04-Feb-13 09:44:34

I've got AdBlock - but just got a massive space

It's only on chat.

Wowcher grin

RooneyMara Mon 04-Feb-13 09:46:33

another reason to hate group deal shite. grin

coppertop Mon 04-Feb-13 09:52:16

Got it too and it's extremely annoying.

KateSMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 04-Feb-13 09:53:04

<flails about wildly>

Sorry guys, we're on it.

<hands out emergency rations>

Lifeisontheup Mon 04-Feb-13 09:55:30

Please make it go away, otherwise I might have to do my essay. grin

AnyFucker Mon 04-Feb-13 09:56:22

same here, on threads I started

RandallPinkFloyd Mon 04-Feb-13 09:56:57

Just wanted to say that I use Adblock on my lap top too but I turn it off to use MN.

I like MN very much want them to stay in business. If that means having a few adverts on my screen and clicking the odd one now and then I think it's a pretty small price to pay.

RandallPinkFloyd Mon 04-Feb-13 09:58:33

I like MN very much *and want them to stay in business - is how that ^^ should read.

kim147 Mon 04-Feb-13 10:04:07

It's really weird when I use other computers and suddenly see all these ads.
But I do feel guilty about blocking them when MN relies on the income.
OTOH, it makes reading the site easier.

This could be an AIBU grin

ScrambledSmegs Mon 04-Feb-13 10:09:11

Ah good. I was going to come and have a good ol' whinge about this, but MNHQ are onto it.

Henceforth I shall remember Wowcher as the brand that fucked up MN. I'm sure they'll be happy to know that grin

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman Mon 04-Feb-13 10:19:51

And me. I have adblocker installed but it's not catching this one, it's driving me mad. Google Chrome here.

BillericayDickie Mon 04-Feb-13 10:24:50

glad it isn't just me

foxache Mon 04-Feb-13 10:29:35

Lifeisontheup grin I thought this too, I might have to do some proper work now.

Nagoo Mon 04-Feb-13 10:31:36

<stands in ration queue>

mrsjay Mon 04-Feb-13 10:33:49

I never come on here to moan but I thought My mumsnet was blank and broken It is annoying sort it out Mumsnet please I dont need a wowcher grin

DawnOfTheDee Mon 04-Feb-13 10:37:29

It's happening to me too.....seems to be on all the chat threads. I thought none of the posts were showing and I neeeeeeeded to know people's opinions on baked beans in cottage pies, etc.

Flobbadobs Mon 04-Feb-13 10:40:51

Me too, on ipad.

mrsjay Mon 04-Feb-13 10:42:27

tbh it took me a wee while to work it out and scroll down blush

KateSMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 04-Feb-13 11:09:55

It's fixed! Three cheers for tech and merry England!

FruOla Mon 04-Feb-13 11:12:17

Thank you thanks and gin grin

I'm still getting it sad

oh i think its gone! Hurrah smile

Trills Mon 04-Feb-13 11:21:08

The Wowcher ad is wrong anyway.

"sign-up" is not the correct wording.

In the imperative it should be "Sign up to get lots of emails with nothing that you really want".

hugoagogo Mon 04-Feb-13 11:36:08

I would like the wowcher thing to go away please,

I already get eleventy billion emails per day from groupon trying to give me discounts on very expensive restaurants and luxury cars. hmm I have no need of wowcher.

RooneyMara Mon 04-Feb-13 11:39:09

It's not fixed, sorry Kate, the blooming ad is still there interrupting every chat thread sad

The gap has gorn though thankfully

I find it intrusive.

mrsjay Mon 04-Feb-13 11:39:17

and anyway I have heard you need to wait at least a decade to be able to use the discount vouchers grin Justine mumsnet said on another thread if they get complaints they will remove it ,

RooneyMara Mon 04-Feb-13 11:40:02

I mean it just looks like MN is ^endorsing or affiliated to wowcher or something...iyswim? Round the edges is fine, can ignore those.

mrsjay Mon 04-Feb-13 11:41:35

I guess it is an advert MN might get some money wowcher gets more customers , im a bit meh about it but the gaps fixed i can ignore the bar, sometimes the flashy adverts at the sides distract me confused

LadyBeagleEyes Mon 04-Feb-13 11:45:08

My gap still isn't fixed.

mrsjay Mon 04-Feb-13 11:47:57

mine is try logging out lady

MerylStrop Mon 04-Feb-13 11:54:32

I really object to having adverts IN the thread, like this wowcher one.

Mumsnet is a total collage of adverts already, if you need to advertise them, please do it where you already have adverts

You don't want to end up looking like one of those local mags that nobody reads because they are all ads and no content.

kim147 Mon 04-Feb-13 11:56:01

Still not fixed.

I'm on Firefox.

<walks off muttering something about CSS, padding, cache and hard refresh to herself>

BillericayDickie Mon 04-Feb-13 11:56:45

seems to have gone now,

EuroShagmore Mon 04-Feb-13 12:00:53

It's not fixed. It is still happening in Chat. (Internet Explorer)

RooneyMara Mon 04-Feb-13 12:10:48

I was on a site last night that had an ad in every single post. It were crap.

its all about balance, MNHQ...<taps nose>

LadyBeagleEyes Mon 04-Feb-13 12:12:36

Well the big gap seems to have gone but I've still got the wowser thing.
I don't like it.

mrsjay Mon 04-Feb-13 12:14:28

aye eeverybody has the wowcher ad lady if we say wowcher often enough does something happen to us like in the adverts >>looks out for falling discount cake

mrsjay Mon 04-Feb-13 12:14:42

everybody*

Nope, still have the huge gap on all chat threads with chrome.

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 04-Feb-13 12:44:37

Hello. There are a few threads on this so pls forgive me if I just C&P Justine's post from one of the other threads...

"Hello, hello
Yes it's additional wee thing we're testing on chat forums and yes it's an attempt to make an buck without causing too much irritation. It had a problem when launched in that it pushed everything down the page but that's fixed now. Do we think we can give it a go for a wee while and see if you can live with it. Obviously if it drives everyone bananas then we'll nix..."

Oh, and the ad should be a nice unobstrusive blue, rather then in-yer-face green. We're working on sorting that ASAP>

kim147 Mon 04-Feb-13 12:59:49

It's been fixed - and it's got past my Adblock grin

Still it's not that obtrusive.

MonaLotte Mon 04-Feb-13 13:24:02

It's distracting, there are loads of ads now. I really dislike it tbh.

Lifeisontheup Mon 04-Feb-13 13:33:56

Just downloaded adblocker and every site I go on is much much quicker!

FloatyBeatie Mon 04-Feb-13 13:34:28

Why does it get past adblock (on Firefox) just out of interest? Is it not technically classed as an ad? Nothing else is getting past my adblock on MN.

The big gap thing has gone.

But that little wowcher ad is extremely annoying, isn't it?

I don't mind most of the ads, except those massive ones down the sides of the homepage from time to time.

I don't think many of us have serious objections to ads, seeing as how they fund MN, it's more the fact that it's actually on the thread itself, rather than with the rest of the ads over there -->

Tis the thin end of the wedge IMO

Tee2072 Mon 04-Feb-13 15:03:01

It's a one line advert. What does it really take from your MN experience?

Also, on the mobile site, there's ads within the threads.

However, I would like to say, it's a bit annoying that it takes a moment to load and the screen jumps once it shows up.

GetOrf Mon 04-Feb-13 15:07:17

I thought the gap was annoying, but the ad itself is fine.

I am used to in-thread ads anyway (they are always there on the mobile app).

It's only a little thing. MN is a business, it enables us to come and talk to each other on here for nowt. The ad isn't a pop up or something hideously intrusive, I think it's fine.

One of the many reasons that I like MN so much (laptop version) is that the ads are 'confined' to a certain space, and don't cause loading problems.

Putting an ad into the actual thread space is different, and comes across as visually intrusive.

The phone app is a major PITA, ads or no ads, as it currently causes my phone to crash on loading every single time I try to use it, those ads aren't so much of a visual problem to me.

GetOrf Mon 04-Feb-13 15:21:27

There was a bit of complaint a few months ago when the mobile app ads appeared - it was a bit annoying at first but tbh you get used to it after a while.

Tee2072 Mon 04-Feb-13 15:27:13

I meant the mobile site, Tapir, not the app. The app is horrible. Mobile site works great and I don't even notice the ads any more.

GetOrf Mon 04-Feb-13 15:28:24

I am completely lying - I don't use the app at all, just the mobile site.

GetOrf Mon 04-Feb-13 15:28:51

And yes the mobile site is gfreat.
