Would you like to organise a regular-ish meet-up in your Local area?

It doesn't have to involve coffee and toddlers. It could be an evening in a gin palace, a frenzy of biscuit-making at a cookery school or a trip to the nearest canoeing centre. We won't judge.

You get to be called Local Ambassador (with a special calling card, no less) and there are some shiny Meet-ups pages in Local which will make get-togethers easier to organise. Here are a few examples of Meet-ups that are already active:

local.mumsnet.com/islington/group-meet-ups/islington
local.mumsnet.com/oxford/group-meet-ups/headington
local.mumsnet.com/exeter/group-meet-ups/exeter-centre
local.mumsnet.com/norwich/group-meet-ups/norwich-centre
local.mumsnet.com/bolton-bury/group-meet-ups/bolton
local.mumsnet.com/bath/group-meet-ups/bath

Of course, you can just join an existing group (look on local.mumsnet.com to find your nearest site), but anyone who signs up before midnight on Monday Feb 4 to be a Local Ambassador will receive a Dodo Book For Cooks to archive their favourite recipes and a Dodo Household Stuff Book to keep their paperwork in order.

Please email local@mumsnet.com putting 'Dodo Ambassador' in the subject field and stating in the email your local area/town.

Part of me would love to, but the other part is scared that no-one will be interested. how much commitment is involved?

We just ask Local Ambassadors to organise a regular-ish meet-up (say every month to 6 weeks) and add useful listings if they have the time and inclination. Obviously LAs can't start organising a meet-up until a few people have joined their group.

EmmaMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 29-Jan-13 12:24:24

LillethTheCat

How come there's loads for Bath and Oxford, but not a lot for North Yorkshire?

Very good question Lilleth. It's because we haven't got a Local Editor in North Yorkshire yet, so we haven't created area labels, but if anyone is interested in becoming a Local Ambassador in a site without a Local Editor, we can create some area labels with their help and get things started.

Blatherskite Tue 29-Jan-13 12:39:13

Will you be replying to all emails ? By the looks of things I have a local site but there are no recent posts, all seem to be 08/09/10
Does that mean it isn't active ?

EmmaMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 29-Jan-13 13:06:18

OK - Just tried to join up for my local area meet up group and it told me that this feature is coming soon?

Hmm, you can join from both mobile and desktop sites. Could you pm me which meet-up (and within which site) you were trying to join and I'll take a look?

NormaStanleyFletcher Tue 29-Jan-13 13:10:59

Ah - I may have got the wrong end of the stick then. There are no meet up's in that site yet, so I guess you are joining up for a specific meetup, rather than "here is a list of people around X that would be interested in a potential meetup" type list.

MariusEarlobe Tue 29-Jan-13 13:33:22

Norma, the local ambassador will organise a meet up and post details in the meet up section for a specific time and date.

There's also a friendship bench for just is anyone in x area and fancies a coffee.

LillethTheCat Tue 29-Jan-13 13:59:32

Am I asking for the moon if I want to be able to see my small area of my county (like the way you split up London) but also the neighbouring sections of the neighbouring counties information?

MmeLindor Tue 29-Jan-13 17:18:53

Dundee Local Editors needed for following areas (although we might combine areas - we have too many, I think)

Craigie
Douglas
Dundee centre
Fintry / Whitfield
Law / Hilltown / Stobswell
Lochee / Charleston
Menzieshill
Montifieth
Pitkerro
St Marys /Ardler /Kirkton
West End
West Ferry / Broughty Ferry

Commitment is to help find activities in the area, and to organise a meet up once a month. I am chatting to local businesses to get you some discounts or freebies eg when you organise a meet up in a cafe, that you get free cake. I also try to organise free tickets to attractions, in return for you writing a review.

Tee2072 Tue 29-Jan-13 17:48:40

MmeL means Local Ambassadors. grin

Great LEs run the local sites and deal with the advertising, listing editing, etc. LAs help by running meet ups, writing reviews etc.

Like Mmel said, all of us LEs, so far as I know, are talking to businesses about getting the LAs discounts and things so they'll go and write a review on their MN Local.

The Meet-ups are designed as your latter suggestion "here is a list of people around X that would be interested in a potential meetup" type list

But if there's no Local Ambassador in your area yet, there won't be any group to hang out in, unless er, you start one…

EmmaMumsnet what's the difference between a Local Editor and a Local Ambassador please?

Local Ambassador: this is a volunteer role, organising regular-ish meet-ups and posting listings and reviews whenever humanly possible.

Local Editors look after a particular site. It's a more formal role with a time commitment but Local Editors get to keep some revenue from advertising on their local site.

if you hover over your area on the map, you should be able to click on it - a little box will show up on the right. Click on that, to take you to the area you need.

I think the areas covered are very tight ie there's Marylebone, Marylebone Road, Oxford Street, Lisson Grove etc. I think you'd be better having these small areas covered by one big area. It's too specific.

I'm willing to organise a meet up, in fact I am hoping to meet some mums for coffee already. I'm not sure if I could be a local ambassador as I've just moved here and know no-one and nothing of the area yet. Maybe it would be a way of meeting people though. You'd be the first to organise a Meet-up in Westminster – it's still early days for new Mumsnet Local. You don't need detailed knowledge of the area to organise a Meet-up as you can chat to others in the group about where to meet etc (once others have joined). It's completely up to you though (just email me at local@mumsnet.com if you think it's a good idea). I'll pass on your comments about area labels to the Local Editors Kate and Emma. Not sure if I e-mailed the right place. Shall I e-mail again or will that make things messy if it did end up in the right box? I was applying for Portswood in Southampton.

No need to email again, I've got it. Thanking you kindly.

EmmaMumsnet (MNHQ) Thu 31-Jan-13 16:54:22

Can't see anything for my town (Crawley in West Sussex) except some adverts for a few businesses?! Am I being dense?

I'm torn really, I'd like to do it but I'm not sure I am up to the task TBH due to a heady mix of illness and social anxiety nobody likes me etc blush

Mumsnet Oxfordshire is in need of Local Ambassadors for:

Banbury
Benson
Berinsfield
Bicester
Burford
Carterton
Chalgrove
Chipping Norton
Didcot
Faringdon
Grove
Henley-on-Thames
Kidlington
Thame
Wantage
Watlington
Wheatley
Witney
Woodstock

Is there an event you'd like to attend, or a venue you'd like to try out? Become an LA and use your MN pulling power to get a discounted (or even free) entry for yourself and other mums in the area. Perhaps you're fed up of all those coffee mornings and would really prefer a wine evening, or an abseiling Saturday, or a craft event.

Maybe you're not on maternity leave yet, haven't done any NCT but would like to meet some other expectant mums. Whatever it is just sign up, talk to your Local Editor and see what can be done - the world Oxfordshire is your lobster!

PS - did we miss your area? Please let us know at oxfordshire@mumsnetlocal.com

laward Fri 01-Feb-13 11:09:31

Hi fuzzpig, we haven't got a Local Editor in West Sussex yet so we haven't created any area labels. You could try it once and see what happens…

Hi freerange, new Mumsnet Local hasn't got any international sites yet, but I've emailed you.

mistlethrush Tue 05-Feb-13 10:36:47

<swigs tea> ooh thanks Mistlethrush, I needed that. Have you got any cake? I need some sugargy to power me through the rest of the emails. Sorry I haven't got to you (and some others) yet. I'm asking people for advice on area labels etc so it takes longer than you think!

soapnuts Tue 05-Feb-13 11:01:34

Did you know you spelt Armagh wrong on the local site? it's spelt Armargh on the site - i'm waiting for the international ones too (will there still be dodos on offer??)

mistlethrush Tue 05-Feb-13 11:01:39

<Hands over the biscuitbiscuitbiscuitbiscuit>

The areas to split things down into are quite difficult to work out I would imagine - because you could split places like the one I live in into say 10 - 15 different areas, but one might be a good start with splinter groups where necessary.... I suppose it also depends on what sort of meet-up as if its a coffee morning on a regular basis you might want to be a lot more local, whereas for an evening out you're probably prepared to opt for a single more central location.

LillethTheCat Tue 05-Feb-13 11:03:00

I was hoping no-one else would notice that soapnuts. I changed it yesterday but now everyone knows blush. We could always ask Dodo again when we're looking at internationals and see what they say.

Hi Emma, I received you email regarding the Croydon area and would like to know how to know what the next step is re: the editor role.

Emma will email you loads of info if you're to be a local editor, but the Local sites are reaching critical mass atm, so she's probably manically busy.

Hth smile

Welovegrapes Mon 25-Mar-13 14:47:45

Thanks for the card smile

Looks very flashy and I am looking forward to waving it around.

Is there a thread for instructions for what I need to do next?

ripsishere Tue 26-Mar-13 01:47:41

I'll volunteer for Kl and Selangor if that helps at all.
