Here's what I don't get about Mumsnet postings

1. Why would you use so many acronyms? Is it really so much more time consuming to write "my son" than "DS"? Just type what you mean people, it's only a few more characters.
2. What is the strikethrough all about?? Every other message seems to include a sentence or two that the poster has inexplicably chosen to apply strikethrough to. Can anyone explain why? Do people really find it witty?

bear

AitchTwoOhOneTwo Tue 15-Jan-13 23:12:45

1. It's pretty standard internet lingo
2. Yup and stop picking fights, it's not nice

okay

first of all the acronyms are not MN-only, heaps were in use way before MN came into being, they have been adopted across the net; most folk use them easily, some users prefer to type my son, my daughter etc. Shrug.

the strikethrough can be deployed to hilarious ends not always successfully unfort

HTH

Right! I'm fed up now of seeing that around

How do you make the bears appear?!

I have been he coming up to a year and I am yet to learn

Just sayin'

GetOrf Tue 15-Jan-13 23:19:26

You do the brackets like you do with any other emoticons, with bear in.

Op the strikethrough came about as a result of a thread where people were chatting to tech, he made a smartasrsed comment with a strikethrough, and then unleashed hell as 396 mners then begged him to allow any poster to do the same. Anyway, other people find it funny, not all. Nobody is right and nobody is wrong. Peace and love.

DoubleYew Tue 15-Jan-13 23:20:03

This has been done a lot.

1. Ds etc is not just a MN thing, used all over the internet. But lots of people on here are typing while breastfeeding or under a sleeping baby so every keystroke matters, sometimes. I think the 'darling' bit is also slightly ironic as its a place to be honest about how you might not be loving your child / mother right now. Some posters refuse to conform and use 'miniPicnic' or some such derivative of their name, which I find more confusing.

You can't really just order people to do what you want you know. Ds means my son. Do you type ok instead of okay or etc instead on et cetera?

2. Strikethrough is like an aside, something you don't say out loud but might secretly be wanting to say. Some people can't really work out how to use it correctly. Some people hate it and don't find it witty.

Well, you learn something new every day or so they tell me.

ah CRAP

I always thought the D stood for Dastardly. Or Damned. Or Disorientated.

actually I didn't but wanted to be able to use the strikeout

I'd vote for a new topic called Cunty Corner.

It has promise.

Is there a C***y Corner.

<excited>

bear Fuck yeh! I can di it.

TheGreatGatsby Tue 15-Jan-13 23:27:37

Not trying to pick a fight, just genuinely don't understand it. But some of the responses have helped enlighten (and some have just confused further!!) :-)

Disclaimer My above comment is not a personal attack on the OP. Any likeness to posters or OPs are totally coincidental. unless stated otherwise

That's MN, Gatsby. Confusing and enlightening. We giveth and we taketh away...

crazynanna Tue 15-Jan-13 23:29:37

I love the strikethrough

I even forget my self and try do it on other forums. Or is that forii?

TheGreatGatsby Tue 15-Jan-13 23:31:23

New-ish, I've read posts off and on over the past year. There's so much great about Mumsnet but then there's some stuff that just seems to be about making new people feel stupid or not included.

usualsuspect Tue 15-Jan-13 23:31:24

Its Fora, but thats a bit poncey

Viviennemary Tue 15-Jan-13 23:31:35

bear

I still haven't got over the disappointment there wasn't a Christmas bear with a hat. It couldn't be done apparently as the bear wasn't round. confused. Still I expect it's all down to technology. Nods wisely.

GetOrf Tue 15-Jan-13 23:31:40

I have no idea why I typed peace and love.

I certainly don't mean it.

Let's have a fucking FIGHT. <Flicks v signs at OP>

Oh hang on. Creepy wee brackets probably won't pass the wit test either.

usualsuspect Tue 15-Jan-13 23:32:09

Well coming on and telling us we are doing it wrong isn't going to win you many friends.

bear <--- Its took me a year to actually ask about that and yet its so obvious!

I'm off now to go put a bear on everything to show off my new talent grin

usualsuspect Tue 15-Jan-13 23:33:05

I hate that fucking bear.

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee Tue 15-Jan-13 23:33:06

Boysarelikedogs - you no longer have to do each word - you can now do whole passages of text grin

TGG - glad you aren't just picking a fight could have fooled me both the acs and strike through are great smile HTH

OeufsEnCocotte Tue 15-Jan-13 23:33:23

crazynanna Tue 15-Jan-13 23:33:26

fora

GetOrf Tue 15-Jan-13 23:34:00

We don't have to include everyone. It's not school.

But if you are a good'un people will welcome you with open arms. Coming out with passagg nonsense 'do people find it witty' will mark you out as a Moira.

usualsuspect Tue 15-Jan-13 23:34:48

Whats a Moira?

GetOrf Tue 15-Jan-13 23:35:02

I loathe the bear. LOATHE.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder Tue 15-Jan-13 23:35:08

I want Cunty Corner!

<starts cunty sit in>

ZooAnimals Tue 15-Jan-13 23:35:21

Can cunty corner be opposite flouncers corner? So that we can just nip over and flounce if someone is cunty?

bear You cant say that when I've only just found out the complex code so I can use it!

GetOrf Tue 15-Jan-13 23:36:07

I don't know usual I just made it up. But Moira's are usually humourless cows who like to boss people about in my experience.

usualsuspect Tue 15-Jan-13 23:36:13

We can shove the cunty people into flouncers corner when we are bored with them.

usualsuspect Tue 15-Jan-13 23:36:51

Like Moira from Emmerdale? grin

PelvicFloorClenchReminder Tue 15-Jan-13 23:37:19

But it should be close enough so we can chuck bears at them

GetOrf Tue 15-Jan-13 23:37:30

They should rename AIBU Cunty Corner.

It's apt.

TheGreatGatsby Tue 15-Jan-13 23:37:37

Good to know GetOrf, will remember that.

No, not a bloke. Just a very normal mum who is struggling to understand some Mumsnet habits.

usualsuspect Tue 15-Jan-13 23:38:17

I was going to go to bed before 11 tonight <shakes fist at OP>

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee Tue 15-Jan-13 23:38:22

There's so much great about Mumsnet but then there's some stuff that just seems to be about making new people feel stupid or not included

That's a ridiculous attitude. There are in-jokes, there are abbreviations, there are all kinds of things that go on that not everyone is in on, old or new. Of course the longer you are here, and the more you post, the more you 'get' them, like anywhere else in life... you can't expect hundreds of people to act as though everyone is new all of the time just so someone doesn't feel 'left out' not knowing why something is so funny??!!

<testing>

bear

GetOrf Tue 15-Jan-13 23:39:37

Ooh is there a cow called moira in emmerdale?

There was a horrible bossy type called that in malory towers as well I think.

ooh yay it worked

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee Tue 15-Jan-13 23:39:59

But Moira's are usually humourless cows who like to boss people about in my experience

Spot on!!!

Moira on Emmerdale is not a typical Moira, not at all!!

usualsuspect Tue 15-Jan-13 23:41:13

Well shes not really a cow, but shes a bit bossy, she used to be in Take The High Road. I don't spend all my life watching soaps, honest

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee Tue 15-Jan-13 23:41:32

and while I'm on a roll, there are lots of things on MN that don't float my boat yet others find hilarious, I either don't click on the thread or if I do by accident I get off the thread - I don't post 'do people really think it's funny' - because clearly they do! It's a no brainer surely??

usualsuspect Tue 15-Jan-13 23:41:55

Shes shagging Cain jealous

I joined in Feb of last year and I didn't understand either but you learn.

Heres a bear just for you.

strike outs are fun when you learn to use them correctly

CuttedUpPear Tue 15-Jan-13 23:42:56

I think if you've been here a long time you may well have run out of salient or even witty points to make so you just prat about a bit with bears and strikethroughs.
<speaks for self>

InLove You didn't work that out yourself did you? I hope not blush

Cunty Corner will upset the POs, GetO betcha don't give a fuck.

I haev never done a bear.

ZooAnimals Tue 15-Jan-13 23:45:15

chipping that reminds me of school.

Teacher; do you think this is funny? <hold up text book with penis drawn on it>
Pupil; confused <obviously otherwise I wouldn't have done it>

<whole class trying not to laugh>

OeufsEnCocotte Tue 15-Jan-13 23:46:55

OP, like many other internet fora forums MN has its own language and culture. You need to lurk moar (as per Rule 33).

Be nice to Moira's!

In love with Ms Stuart

IceAndSliceOfBrainsPlease Tue 15-Jan-13 23:48:32

zoo, DP & I have agreed on many, many occasions that there is never anything so amusing as a scribbled drawing of a spurting cock.

noviceoftheday Tue 15-Jan-13 23:49:38

Does anyone else find themselves wanting to use strike throughs in emails at work or is it just me?blush

I try strike throughs and grins in texts. Think that means I have a problem

TheDoctrineOfSnatch Wed 16-Jan-13 00:02:55
