NOW CLOSED Mumsnet Cars: Add a car review and you could win a rafting trip for 6 (worth £320)

KatieBMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 19-Nov-12 16:42:00

You may remember we recently joined up with What Car? to bring you Mumsnet Cars, a great place to go for Mumsnetter reviews and expert advice (if we do say so ourselves).

We're sure you've all had a good nosey round the new site, but if you haven't, why not head over now to read the reviews that have been written about your car. Is there anything that has been missed so far that you think others should know? Is there anything in the current review you don't agree with? Or a feature you want to shout about? If so, please add your own review to give other Mumsnetters valuable information about your experiences.

If there isn't a review on your car already why not add one to help other Mumsnetters who are looking for a family car? Here's the link: www.mumsnet.com/cars/reviews

Also, do come back to this thread and let us know you've added your review.

Also do tell us about your ideal family car. If you could have any feature possible, what would it be? What's the one thing family cars are missing? What is the deciding factor when you buy a car?

As a token of our eternal and grateful thanks we persuaded the lovely team behind Nativity 2 - Danger in the Manger (released November 23 - staring David Tennant and Joanna Page - check out the trailer here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmqB5ZRhWA0&feature=plcp) to donate a really cool prize. Everyone who adds a comment to this thread (including those who say they have added a review) has a chance to win a half day rafting trip for 6 people (worth £320) in Snowdonia - see here for more info.
If you don't live near here or aren't planning on visiting Wales any time soon, the winner will be able to transfer the prize to a friend or relation. Please note the minimum age for the trip is 12 years old and the trip must be taken before 12/11/2013. Please click here for full Ts&Cs.

Don't forget to add your car review smile

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

Done!

prettybird Fri 23-Nov-12 12:07:33

Just added my review for the Mazda6.

Pascha Fri 23-Nov-12 12:24:03

Is there any point in adding a review for a ropey 13yr old focus?

Wigeon Fri 23-Nov-12 12:39:13

Pascha - I've just added a review for my Focus which we've had for years and which has now done 120,000 miles! smile.

I think the main feature of my idea family car is simply reliability and cost-effectiveness - I don't want to have to spend £££ every time it goes in for its MOT and I certainly don't want it breaking down on the M25 with two children in the back. So far, the Ford Focus is doing very well on both those counts!

The main consideration when buying a family car is cost, followed by running costs (petrol gallons per mile, tax etc). Then reliability. Then space in the boot. Then comfort. Then environmental credentials. Then finally, look and style!

ouryve Fri 23-Nov-12 13:08:07

Just checked prettybird's Mazda 6 review as being useful - or i did when all the links and icons eventually loaded.

Is there a reason why the picture for the car is an almost 2MB absolutely massive picture scaled down for display purposes? I had to wait a couple of minutes for everything to load on my superskinny excuse for broadband.

And please. No rafting holidays. My idea of hell.

prettybird Fri 23-Nov-12 13:15:26

Actually - I was just thinking I needed to go back and add some stuff to my reivew. Hadn't even though about things like running costs. Servicing costs are minimal and petrol consumption is (relatively) good.

My car is nearly 10 years old but still going strong. As far as I can make out from Which? although the car has been updated slightly since I got it, it has not fundamentally changed. Hence why I would have another one like a shot.

Whojamaflip Fri 23-Nov-12 15:00:19

done grin

QOD Fri 23-Nov-12 17:45:37

Done!!

SoupDragon Fri 23-Nov-12 17:47:01

Why the hell would I want to go rafting somewhere bloody cold?
Or at all for that matter grin

OliviaMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 23-Nov-12 18:07:38

Soupy, maybe we could make it crafting for you? grin

SoupDragon Fri 23-Nov-12 18:10:02

Crafting you say...? smile

WorkInProgress Fri 23-Nov-12 18:25:33

done

exexpat Fri 23-Nov-12 20:33:06

Just reviewed my Toyota.

exexpat Fri 23-Nov-12 20:35:34

Oh, and I'll happily have ouryve and SoupDragon's rafting holidays if they win smile

(by the way, why don't we have a 'flutters eyelashes beguilingly while tilting head with a winning smile' emoticon?)

COCKadoodledooo Fri 23-Nov-12 21:26:06

Mine isn't there - not sure many other people would be interested in a review of a 40+ year old Morris Traveller as a family vehicle though grin

ouryve Fri 23-Nov-12 22:27:01

DS1 would love pictures though, COCKadoodle!

CharlotteBronteSaurus Fri 23-Nov-12 22:30:50

done, but again, count me out for the cold/wet/outdoors business
<ignore the facts that DH would love it>

blondieminx Fri 23-Nov-12 22:35:05

Liking the idea of a crafting holiday grin

Our fab Focus is no more following an incident with a white van sad so I've just been having a browse of the reviews, looking at options for a replacement.

It's great to see reviews of cars from other parents smile

Can I ask a couple of quick questions please MNHQ?

On the app, are the MN reviews and What Car reviews supposed to be the same?

Would it be possible to get some sort of whizzy function whereby it displays the rear legroom in each car (important when pondering whether an ERF carseat will fit [[ http://www.rearfacing.co.uk/facts.php info here]]

Finally, i looked at the Toyota Avensis review and couldn't see anything mentioned there about the recent recalls?

thanks

Viperidae Sat 24-Nov-12 01:05:09

The only review for the Toyota Rav 4 is mine but somebody liked it! grin That's a pathetically grateful face!

I have since then had a letter about a recall as blondie mentioned but am waiting to hear from the garage.

EdgarAllanPond Sat 24-Nov-12 10:53:37

added my review of my Jazz - best thing i ever bought (excepting the Hound of Poe)

EdgarAllanPond Sat 24-Nov-12 10:54:11

i would be cock smile

The review on the golf is obviously for a newer model than mine! Want a new one now envy

missorinoco Sat 24-Nov-12 20:14:51

I like my C Max and agree with the MN review. I'm sure there are higher tech small MPV's on the market, but for a five person family it is safe, reliable and importantly affordable. Not the sexiest car on the market by a long shot, but I am very happy with it.

my car isnt there, but I will post a review for it. And for my husbands car too.

SunshinePanda Sun 25-Nov-12 14:49:37

Our ideal family car needs to be comfortable for long journeys (air con essential), stylish and fun to drive. I guess safety must be high on the list as well. Both our cars already have reviews, which I have read and agree with.

CointreauVersial Sun 25-Nov-12 18:55:31

Every time I click onto Mumsnet Cars my Internet Explorer locks up ("Not Responding"). I have tried several times over the last week with no success.

The irony is, we are in the middle of buying a car and would love to read some reviews.

Any ideas, oh techy peeps?

EcoLady Sun 25-Nov-12 20:27:10

I stand by every word of the review I wrote of my cee'd and agree with the What Car version too. Vast boot and superb, economical, comfortable family car. We drove it from Cambridge to Cornwall this summer - it was a very easy drive and far more comfortable than in the Focus Estate that we have previously used.

I think that family cars should come with removable washable seat covers... smile

oreocrumbs Sun 25-Nov-12 21:20:10

Have reviwed my beast. I'll save you the time in looking it up, just don't bother with an insignia! grin

waps Sun 25-Nov-12 23:40:22

I can't seem to add a review of my car as it isn't listed. Which seems odd as it is a typical Mummywagon. And I do see lots of them around, although it is a Honda F-RV and I live near Swindon so maybe there's a particular concentration here. Still, it needs adding as it has lots of positives for families. For starters there are 6 full seats without giving up boot space so you can still carry luggage for 6.

48Hours Mon 26-Nov-12 01:01:12

have just written a review on our car smile

prettybird Mon 26-Nov-12 16:17:27

Blondieminx- I had a company Avensis before my Mazda6 and was going to buy the new one (as it was back then) almost without a test drive, if it hadn't been for the really shitty and arrogant service from my local Toyota dealer angry

As a result, I started looking around, read a review about the Mazda6 (and I'd previously had a Mazda 323 which I'd been very happy with) and thought it sounded worth having a look at. The service at the dealer we went to couldn't have been more of a contrast - but more importantly, once I test drove it and checked out the interior, I decided that it not only looked better (which OK, is a subjective opinion) and drove really nippily for a larger car, it had far better interior storage both for the front and rear passengers - something that for me was really important with a young family.

Now, the interior storage for the Avensis might have improved since then - it was a wee while ago now!

LiveItUp Thu 29-Nov-12 22:01:34

I LOVE my car (so very happy to post review), and I'd love a cold wet rafting weekend in Snowdonia, so bring it on .... grin

purplemonstermum Fri 30-Nov-12 16:13:20

Done.

blondieminx Fri 30-Nov-12 17:55:33

Thanks prettybird smile

Mazda plus tall DH appears to be incompatible grin

Looking at the Qashqai now...

BabyJesusInTheCabbageVan Sat 01-Dec-12 07:58:10

My car is isn't in the review list, how do I add one?

Elfontheshelfiswatchingyou Sun 02-Dec-12 21:43:11

Done. I love my little Fiat but DH wants a Qashqai as the mian family car so I'm off to check out the reviews (we are not replacing my car though, oh no).

prettybird Sun 02-Dec-12 21:50:25

Blondieminx: fair enough. Both dh and I are small, so it's not something we've had to think about.

chrisrobin Tue 04-Dec-12 10:40:08

Done.

ReindeerHooves Fri 07-Dec-12 14:01:37

I've added our cars. One of them twice as I didn't realise straight away that there's a separate family car and estate car section blush so I added our Toyota Avensis estate to the family car bit and then c&p'd to the estate car bit. MNHQ feel free to delete the rogue one smile

Also agree with blondieminx about the recalls, our Toyota is dh's car and I had forgotten about the two? three? times he's had it back at the garage due to recalls in the three years we've had the car. Could that be added to the review at all?

yes I know I've made a complete hash of this

mistlethrush Fri 07-Dec-12 14:12:34

Blondie - DH is 6' and doesn't fit in quite a number of cars - you just can't get the driving position far enough back for him. However, if you liked the Focus, we chose a skoda octavia rather than the focus because it was bigger for the same sort of money. DH can drive and I can sit behind him - OK he's not in quite the ideal driving position, but only one click off it, and I don't have much room - but then I'm 5'8 too so being able to sit in the back behind someone is pretty good. We've been in it with my parents with DS in the middle for quite long distances, absolutely fine. It has a HUGE boot.

I have already reviewed it, I suppose I'd better check its still OK as I did it sometime ago grin

TheReturnoftheSmartArse Fri 07-Dec-12 14:35:42

I've reviewed the VW Polo and the Audi A6 Avant. I enjoyed that! blush

NotMostPeople Fri 07-Dec-12 14:35:50

Done. Good timing as I didn't know about Mumsnet cars and we're planning to get a new one.

ReindeerHooves Fri 07-Dec-12 14:41:06

I won't need such a big car next time round, the pushchair and enormocarseats are no more.

The review of the Fiat 500 said everything I hoped it would smile

Seriously not 1 little Rover? It's not THAT old blush

Well, I like it. So there.

MNHQ

How can I write a revies of my car when you don't have it in the drop down options?

It's aMazda RX8. Maybe I'm being stupid and missing it? You have MX5s there, so it's not like you've only got 'family' cars?

We love our RX8. It's a family car for us as DS can sit in the back with plenty of room and we love it.

Bonkerz Fri 07-Dec-12 19:12:22

I have a fiat multipla. It's a 6 seater and we love it! Family of 2 adults and 4 children age 1-12 and we can fit everything we need (inc travel cot and pushchair) for a weeks holiday in the boot an all the kids have full size seat and loads of leg room. I'm also a childminder and have 3 0-4yrs car seats all on back row and two double and a single buggy in the boot!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why isn't this reviewed!

ClaireStronge Sat 08-Dec-12 17:14:03

Ive added a review about the Ford Smax which is fantastic apart from our current issue with finding out it doesnt have a spare wheel!

AnnMumsnet (MNHQ) Sun 09-Dec-12 14:22:28

Hello - keep the brilliant reviews (and not-so-brilliant) coming

Some of you have asked about cars 'not on the list' - and I have asked the team about this...watch this space...

If you do add a review do let us know here for a chance to win the rafting trip.. thanks

Mindingalongtime Mon 10-Dec-12 18:01:00

I am amazed to find my car on the list, I don't know anyone else with one, I love it to bits evn though I spend £500 on fuel! Mercedes GL500

Mindingalongtime Mon 10-Dec-12 18:01:21

I added a review

BlueyDragon Fri 14-Dec-12 05:41:14

I've added a review - not sure why Audi A6s are in the Executive Car bracket on the review site when the A4 is in the Estate Car bracket. I'd have thought they should both be down as Estate Cars?

youmaycallmeSSP Fri 14-Dec-12 14:35:47

I've added one for the Megane and another for the Focus. We're replacing the Megane with something a bit bigger next week so will have an extra one to post soon!

Have added a review, but had problems doing the star rating - when I hover over the star ratings, the stars disappear (using mac, and on latest version of firefox) - tried to go back in and edit them, but it doesn't seem to accept it. Drive should be 4 x not 3 x if you can see my review, Olivia.

Marking this to remind myself. Although rafting is my actual idea of hell.

what's the betting it becomes the first and only mumsnet competition I win?

Kahlua4me Sat 15-Dec-12 21:32:05

Have reviewed my car and dh's, is that allowed?
Thought I would add his as he has a landrover defender and they are always slated. But we love it and so do the kids!
It is more expensive to run as not many miles to the gallon and noisy but so much more fun than mine. Also can do hours on the road without kids complaining which is an absolute bonus.

conorsrockers Sun 16-Dec-12 07:45:13

Awwww.....my Toyota Hilux is not on there - it's a great family car, with the biggest boot evergrin. Love my pick-up!

SledsImOn Sun 16-Dec-12 08:07:58

That's a very generous prize but if anything could persuade me not to write a review, it's the idea of having to go rafting in the middle of winter - or any time really!

So I'll add one, or maybe two, when I get a moment, but please don't make me win grin

SledsImOn Sun 16-Dec-12 08:10:01

Oh I see I'm not alone! Glad it ain't just me...! <big wuss>

Elfontheshelfiswatchingyou Sun 16-Dec-12 13:08:07

It would appear that I am the only one who wants to win (hint hint). smile

VictorAndBarry Sun 16-Dec-12 13:39:24

MNHQ, any update on those of us who would love to review, love to win, and whose cars are not in the list?

tazzle22 Sun 16-Dec-12 23:53:09

I have added review for a nissan x trail .. mines is an 01 so not new ...... but still got good life left in it grin.

so comfy ... and roomy for the dogs and all my bits.

AnnMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 17-Dec-12 09:39:51

VictorAndBarry - Am checking for you - thanks for chasing up on this.

In the meantime if you want to add a review to this thread I will enter you in the draw. You need to add a review (in words) as well as how many stars out of 5 you'd give it for the following aspects: Comfortable, Easy to drive, Powerful, Built to last, Value for money. Don't forget the make and model

thanks

VictorAndBarry Mon 17-Dec-12 11:26:20

Fab smile

It is a Chevrolet spark 1.2 LT, bought as a second car for the family and chosen to be cheap to ensure my teenagers on, and intentionally relatively gutless.

It's a very comfy wee car with a surprisingly high spec level - it has almost every gadget. It's the little things I love; the space to store my glasses, the reversing beepers and the roof rails for when I want to put my bike on top.

It has a tiny boot but I can get four or five bags in if I try. The engine does feel a bit underpowered but that is a boon in my household, it saves teens being tempted to speed. MPG and insurance wise it is very low, with tiny road tax too. Oh, and it is very nippy around town.

Comfort - four stars
Ease of driving - four stars
Powerful - two stars
Built to last - three stars
Value for money - five stars

VictorAndBarry Mon 17-Dec-12 11:32:34

Insure, not ensure blush

Have commented on my totally wonderful XC90. Expensive but bought 2nd (or in our case 4th) hand, a really great car.
