Local - is it working for you?

Just looked at the new Mumsnet Local.
I see the first map, click through to my local area - Surrey.
Then I've looked at Soft Play, Playgrounds, Toddler Groups and they don't show anything. I just see the top banner, side things, footer, and the section title. Nothing below it.

What is it trying to load - a map?
I'm using Google Chrome on Windows Vista, if that's any help.

Techy Stuff:
DIV affected is: local_Main
DIV class side_buttons is empty
DIV class listings_list list_1 is empty

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Thu 18-Oct-12 18:45:55

Hi nannynick.

It's empty because no one's loaded up any listings yet.

We need folks like you <pleading eyes> to load up lots of great info for us. We reckon MNer listings would be much better than listings we could filch acquire from other lists - cos you lot definitely know what's good and what's not, local to you.

nannynick Thu 18-Oct-12 18:56:24

Oh that would explain it. So it's starting from scratch - we had better get listing things.

Hurray!

Yes. That bit should have been nixed.

Try local.mumsnet.com (no www)

That should take you to a luffly map and then to the Local you want.

Oh- I saw that yesterday but the scrolly map is horrid on my phone. I'll try on the computer later, thank you.

The Local Talk boards will be up and running soon - that's where you can post questions etc.

All the past threads will be there, too: it's just taking a little while to migrate them over.

There's probably a listing section for cleaners, too. <need to check>

Yes, sorry about that. The Local Talk boards will be made live pretty soon.

We had to take them down in order to migrate them from the main site. And the migrating bit is a bit fiddly. Tech are on it.

Am assured no existing Local Talk threads will be lost...

Yes, it is a bit at the mo, isn't it?

Do please add some good stuff, if you can. We do want the listings to be things MNers like - rather than stuff filched from other listings places have.

BabySensory has listed under Surrey:Toddler Groups. They aren't a toddler group. They are a class... but they are probably finding it hard to know where to put themselves as they are not a music class, dance class, language class, but a mixture of all. I suspect local editors are going to be very busy moving things around. Maybe for some of the national franchise classes, a decision should be made by MNHQ about what category they get listed under.
JoJingles is PreSchool Class:Music, TumbleTots is PreSchool Class:Sports & Active. Those are quite easy... but BabySensory, is that Language or Music?

nannynick Mon 22-Oct-12 16:50:48

Just tried to add a Playground listing, then had a thought... it's in a different county to where I live. That is going to be a constant problem in my area... I border 3 counties. Once there are more listings... will it be possible to search for things by distance from postcode, rather than having to look in each counties listings? Maybe it could be part of adding things to MyLocalPlanner.

nannynick Mon 22-Oct-12 17:05:31

Adding a playground - that was fun! It wanted Times (I've put Dusk-Dawn daily, though it's probably 24/7), Start Date (random pick), End Date (random pick and add many many years). Things like start date, end date make sense for one off events, but not for ongoing, so error checking code may need some adjustment so if it's an ongoing event it does not insist on a start/end date.

Right, I have 2 whinges.

Firstly, there's no description of what the Friendship Bench is, in Local Meet Ups.

Secondly, there isn't a clicky list at the bottom of the page to navigate you back to the boards.

Apart from that, Lincolnshire is just as empty as I thought it would be. Nothing ever happens here. sad

I don't like it.

My area (Essex) is split into random areas: Essex; Chelmsford; Colchester & Harwich; Southend on Sea.

Listings for my area could appear in Essex or Chelmsford or Southend on Sea. I cant be arsed to search all 3 areas. Nor can I be bothered to create listings in triplicate.

Also all the information about Children's Centres etc. that I lovingly created in the old Mid Essex local area has disappeared.

I've started adding new listings tonight - but it's a slow process.

Thanks for this. We're hoping that, once folks have added some listings, it will all come together in a truly helpful way.

Hi piprabbit,
we're working on pulling in the old listings, but like talk, it's a tricky migration job. Also, there will be a My Local Sites function which allows you to switch between sites really easily.

Birthandbaby Fri 26-Oct-12 21:56:17

Any progress on letting us put listings on the Croydon site?

I don't really understand what you want us to add, or where or how. I would like to guage interest in a local (free) cuppa/cake/crochet meet up, mainly a mini hugs making group, type of thing. Would it be better to wait for the talk listings to arrive (for Gloucester, this is) or is there an appropriate place for such a listing?

wonderstuff Tue 30-Oct-12 17:40:15

friendship bench for Hampshire isn't working. Also why do we have to have a different talkname? Clicking on the 'click here to find out how to be a local meet-up co-ordinator' sets off outlook start up.

incognitomama Tue 30-Oct-12 23:25:22

I may just be being incredibly stupid but, I go to Kent local (via mobile), I can see the bench but there is nothing there and I can't see a way too add?? There is space for business advertising! Have I missed something? I was guessing/hoping the bench was a place for local mn'ers to chat and poss arrange meet-ups (on the subject of which, same thing! Can see meet ups but can't see how to post anything).

<ducks and waits to be shot down in flames for being an idiot>

piprabbit Thu 01-Nov-12 02:29:41

I've just been adding some listings to Netmums - and I have to say it really is so much easier over there.
The main thing is that it remembers what I've typed into each field previously, so I only have to type in the first letter or two of a venue name, address or phone no. and it offers me a list of possible matches. It makes entering multiple events at the same venue so much quicker.
MN Local forces me to type in every single character, every single time - it just feels so slow and clunky as I have to jump back and forth between tabs so I can copy and paste information repeatedly.

i'm trying to add to the friendship bench - but it won't let me add a new listing.

am i doing something wrong?

bump

is it just a glitch?

Well congratulations MNHQ you have just managed to kill what was beginning to be a thriving MN community in our area. Before you stuffed things up for us, we had started having meetups and getting to know each other nicely.

Now we are forbidden from posting unless we choose a new, unchangable name. No-one wants to do this, and even if we did it would be pointless as we would all have to identify outselves as our old name that everyone already knows us by. So, the existing threads have been unposted on since this rule was introduced, and the network is falling apart. Also, one thread on which we were arraging a forthcoming meetup has completely disappeared.

One meetup that had been arranged before you changed the rules did happen, and we were unanimous in how unimpressed we are. No-one has posted any further since. We don't want to be forced into a namechange thank you. We were getting on fine. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Why can't you let us post on existing threads under the name we are already using on that thread?

Hi Feersome,
You can just add one digit to your old Local nickname so that everyone still knows who you are, so you could be Feersome1 or StillFeersome for example. The last thing we wanted to do was stuff things up for existing local Mumsnet communities. If you've already created a Local nickname and you aren't happy, I think we could ask tech for a one-off amnesty and get them changed. Either pm me or email local.mumsnet.com.

That's a glitch Nessa, dates on ongoing listings should be automatic. But if you just put today's date as a start date, and then the end date in a few year's time for now, that'll work. We need reminders to check details every so often so we don't end up with out of date listings.

Emmamumsnet - I actually did manage to upload one listing. I have a few more to put and it stopped me doing anymore.

I'm using a laptop and a desktop and using Internet Explorer.

I have a question. A christmas bristol meet up was arranged originally in the Christmas topic and I believe it may have been moved to the local bit before it was changed. I can't find it anywhere now and it's not in threads I'm on so can't find it and so have no idea if its still happening or not. Can you help mnhq?

Oh and have looked on the new local talk boards and can't find it there. Am I being silly or has it disappeared?
