Can we have a hide poster button, please? It would cut down on cases where posters rub each other up the wrong way, resulting in a ban or slap ion the wrists.

I will buy you gin!

FrankWippery Mon 01-Oct-12 14:20:04

I'll second that based on today's threads alone grin

I'll send cake.

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 14:48:47

I know. It would cut down on hq's workload!

flyoverthegoldenhill Mon 01-Oct-12 15:10:49

well I've clearly missed all the fun

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 01-Oct-12 16:07:24

Did someone say cake?

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 16:11:35

And gin!!

Please, will you discuss it? I don't want to get banned, but equally, I don't want to have to hide whole topics because of posters whio give me the rage.

It would cut down on PAs and vendettas too.

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 01-Oct-12 16:28:12

We'd certainly be willing to look at how difficult it would be to set up.

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 16:48:20

yay, thank you. see, thats why you are my favourite hqer (dont tell the others) wink

RandallPinkFloyd Mon 01-Oct-12 17:06:58

I've finally done that thing where you can see who started the thread, never saw the point in it before.

I now hide before I succumb to the temptation of opening. Otherwise it's like trying not to pick a scab!

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 17:08:00

Randall, I tried that, but it doesnt work on mobile. and I usually mn from the twatphone.

EdMcDunnough Mon 01-Oct-12 17:10:56

Oh good, another convert (and Helen is sounding a bit hopeful there)

Yes, today's threads (naming no dead celebrities) would benefit from this option I feel.

Portofino Mon 01-Oct-12 17:25:08

I have to agree - there have been a few recently who give me the rage and I am TRYING to be good. And I did bring proper Belgian chocs all the way from Belgium on Saturday....<<tries to forget that I was standing right next to Helen MN and didn't know who she was.....>>

usualsuspect3 Mon 01-Oct-12 17:27:32

I think it would be a good idea.

RandallPinkFloyd Mon 01-Oct-12 17:27:43

Oh, crap. I didn't know that. (damn it, it was such a fool-proof plan!)

Ed yes it would be very useful on that thread indeed.

Tbh there are very very few posters I'd use it for, purely because people who boil your piss on one subject can also be great on another.

I do agree with what HQ have said in the past aswell. It could make threads difficult to follow at times and also I think if people started using too easily then it removes a poster's chance to either apologise or explain themselves IYSWIM.

Say someone was all over a thread with really ignorant opinions so you instantly hide them. You could easily miss finding out why they have these opinions or miss them actually changing their opinions.

I do see it's appeal I really do but I don't think it's that simple. Perhaps just a hide post button maybe? I don't know confused

usualsuspect3 Mon 01-Oct-12 17:29:12

Whats gone on today then?

Maybe not such a good idea if I miss stuff though grin

RandallPinkFloyd Mon 01-Oct-12 17:32:33

Just the JS thread Usual.

usualsuspect3 Mon 01-Oct-12 17:38:12

Oh I avoided that one.

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 17:38:31

Some posters are deliberately goady, though. They don't want tio be reasoned with.

usualsuspect3 Mon 01-Oct-12 17:41:09

True,I would only have about 2 posters left visible on the benefit bashing threads.

RandallPinkFloyd Mon 01-Oct-12 17:50:37

Oh, yy to the deliberately goady ones grin

I just hide all benefit bashing ones now, I learnt my lesson there.

The problem is a poster I had a proper slanging match with on a benefit bashing thread has been really lovely about loads of other things.

I'm getting splinters in my arse about this one!

SuperB0F Mon 01-Oct-12 18:04:02

I would support this. It would also cut down MNHQ's workload massively, I think, as people could just avoid being drawn into arguments with irksome types, and there would be far fewer exasperated "Oh do fuck off" -type posts.

usualsuspect3 Mon 01-Oct-12 18:05:22

There would be far less reporting and deleting.

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 18:05:59

Exactly Boffy. And alsio means that trolly goaders don't get what they want!

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 18:06:43

Yes, usual. Soi threads will actually make more sense.

weegiemum Mon 01-Oct-12 18:08:23

I like the "oh do fuck off to the far side of fuck then fuck off again" posts!

Saves me saying it!

Maryz Mon 01-Oct-12 18:11:59

I don't want a "hide poster" option.

I would like a "ban poster" option, pretty please Helen.

I will be really good and only press it in emergencies and when someone really pisses me off

[hopeful]

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 18:13:30

Oh mary, thatd be ace!

Maryz Mon 01-Oct-12 18:14:17

Wouldn't it just grin

We could take turns [generous]. Maybe we could each have it for a night a month. It would save hq sooooo much time and effort.

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 18:16:59

Ah yes. And the recipient would get a message saying "you are annoying, fuck off"

SuperB0F Mon 01-Oct-12 18:18:58

I'd like MNHQ to have an invisibility button for goaders. They wouldn't know, but other posters wouldn't see them or respond to their posts, and they'd get bored and fuck off.

But I suppose if we had the self-discipline to actually follow the guidelines, this would be entirely unnecessary grin.

HotheadPaisan Mon 01-Oct-12 18:19:47

I've used a script to achieve this on here, it works. No disruption to the threads, there's no obligation to answer anyone about anything anyway and in a fast-moving thread people often don't answer direct questions so people don't even know you've hidden them. You can also favourite posters and change their colour for balance.

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 18:22:16

Oh, how I long to be one of those posters who can turn the other cheek and rise above.

Tee2072 Mon 01-Oct-12 18:22:28

I have always been for it.

Also Personal Attack day, whets you can call a cunt a cunt and not get deleted, would make me very very happy.

usualsuspect3 Mon 01-Oct-12 18:24:23

Would you know you were hidden? I expect posters would say I'm hiding you now if you were winning an argument. I would be yelling at the screen then grin

HotheadPaisan Mon 01-Oct-12 18:30:10

They might but I would already have hidden them so I wouldn't see them say that. It could get petty and heated but it does anyway. It worked for me when I used it.

flyoverthegoldenhill Mon 01-Oct-12 18:31:04

Tee I thought you could call a cunt a cunt and not get deleted

HotheadPaisan Mon 01-Oct-12 18:31:53

You wouldn't know, no alert, but you could assume it after the 50th goading of someone still didn't get a response but you can see they are still on the thread. The way the script I used worked it that it highlighted their name but hid their post so you could skip past it. Hiding the name and post completely would work better.

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt Mon 01-Oct-12 18:33:06

Yes please god YES can we have this.

I would love to hide the goading twats on my shitlist.

FrankWippery Mon 01-Oct-12 18:45:34

I did suggest to RebeccaMN that in exchange for cake I could have a free hold on MN for the day. We negotiated and settled on a morning. Just think of the fun.

RandallPinkFloyd Mon 01-Oct-12 19:14:51

Paisan are you some kind of evil genius shock

I definitely agree it would be worth it to be able to hide the goaders because I usually end up either pissing myself off by biting or hiding the whole thread just because of one poster.

Personal Attack day would be fucking awesome!

Maryz Mon 01-Oct-12 19:15:50

The only problem with a "hide poster" option, is that all the sensible posters who know they are a twat will hide the twats.

And the poor newbies won't realise and will try to reason with them, with no support. And they might (horror) think we are silently agreeing.

We need a "I have hidden you because you are a twat" emoticon.

FancyPuffin Mon 01-Oct-12 19:17:45

I vote for two new topics..

PO Corner (In the cuntry)

Twat Land (The unhappiest place on earth)

HotheadPaisan Mon 01-Oct-12 19:21:59

Not my script but will find a link later.

You still state your opinions but without being distracted, and they don't get the thrill of a response and no-one gets caught in the crossfire. Win, win, win.

Alameda Mon 01-Oct-12 19:24:58

I would like it but feel a bit 'let she who has never goaded cast the first stone' though as am a hypocrite blush

MadBusLady Mon 01-Oct-12 19:29:00

Yes please! And then publish monthly league tables of Most Hidden Posters.

I use Another Parenting Forum (not nethuns) that has an Ignore User button. Hardly anyone uses it. It does disrupt the flow and the only people who really deserve it need Reporting anyway, not hiding.

Truly, don't bother. It's just another annoying button to press by accident on a so-called "smart"phone.

I can pm links to discussions of the pointlessness by those who have access to such delights, if hq or I suppose anyone else is interested.

Maryz Mon 01-Oct-12 19:35:09

Excellent idea MadBusLady, along with lists of who has hidden them so we can all judge

<thinks of a number of people who would hide me, and plans on a bit of revenge hiding>

InfinityWelcomesCarefulDrivers Mon 01-Oct-12 19:40:03

huh I started a thread exactly like this a couple of months ago and got no response from MNHQ
<hides HelenMN>

Maryz Mon 01-Oct-12 19:42:18

You need to develop the art of skilfully bumping your own thread, Infinity. And then eventually someone notices grin

or mention cake

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 19:43:43

I must admit, I bought it to their attention via email.

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 19:44:38

And offered gin.

InfinityWelcomesCarefulDrivers Mon 01-Oct-12 19:45:13

I bumped it lots/ We had a wonderful discussion. I think even you may have been on it. Maybe they've all hidden me? <paranoid>

Tee2072 Mon 01-Oct-12 19:47:41

No, you can't call a cunt a cunt. It's a personal attack and the post gets deleted.

And sometimes a cunt really needs to be called a cunt.

BTW I used to be on Delphi Forums and they encourage the use of the ignore button rather than reporting. In fact, if you report someone you get a message saying 'have you tried ignoring the poster?'

It doesn't interrupt the flow. You just see their name and the option to unhide that particular post or the poster in general.

::already making a list of people to hide::

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 19:56:38

Ah, I may have been. Under a different name <shady>

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 01-Oct-12 19:56:44

BlameItOnTheCuervo

Exactly Boffy. And alsio means that trolly goaders don't get what they want!

But don't forget that goading is against our Talk Guidelines. And if you hide all the goaders, we won't get any reports about them - and won't be able to warn/ban them.

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 01-Oct-12 19:57:26

Maryz

Wouldn't it just grin

We could take turns [generous]. Maybe we could each have it for a night a month. It would save hq sooooo much time and effort.

Would there be any posters left, though?

HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 01-Oct-12 19:57:56

SuperB0F

I'd like MNHQ to have an invisibility button for goaders. They wouldn't know, but other posters wouldn't see them or respond to their posts, and they'd get bored and fuck off.

shock

And apols, Infinity. Must have been my day off <blusters>

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 20:03:36

I promise to report trolly goaders before hiding.

Alameda Mon 01-Oct-12 20:04:45

why can't the report button include an option to hide poster, so you have to report to hide but can't hide without reporting?

Tee2072 Mon 01-Oct-12 20:08:24

Actually, Delphi Forums also has a sort of invisible poster option where a mod can mark someone as a Bozo, I think it is, and they think they are posting as normal, but it doesn't appear on the boards at all.

Alameda Mon 01-Oct-12 20:09:50

on vBulletin it was called 'tachy goes to Coventry' for some reason but it always seemed a bit cruel

HotheadPaisan Mon 01-Oct-12 20:12:36

It used to be called adding someone to your killfile.

HotheadPaisan Mon 01-Oct-12 20:13:54

And then you'd get posts like this:

How well-thought out and argued. Have you left school yet?

plonk

So, you'd get told and know they wouldn't see your response. Harsh, but sometimes fair.

HotheadPaisan Mon 01-Oct-12 20:14:32

Except the plonk did have * for emphasis, no bolding in those days.

RandallPinkFloyd Mon 01-Oct-12 20:33:02

arf at added to killfile, seems a little extreme grin

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 20:37:43

Alameda, great idea!

Alameda Mon 01-Oct-12 20:42:04

nobody EVER says that! grin

it would mean people not hiding other posters lightly too, which is obviously better for cohesion and that sort of thing

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 20:43:36

Yes. If I giot into a strop and had pmt I'd have to think before hiding.

OrangeandGoldMrsDeVere Mon 01-Oct-12 20:50:34

Net mum's has a hide poster button..

Just sayin.....

again

Alameda Mon 01-Oct-12 20:52:01

is it actually called net mum's complete with free grocer apostrophe?

Alameda Mon 01-Oct-12 20:52:24

GREENgrocer

Maryz Mon 01-Oct-12 20:54:11

<snort> at leaving out the green and the apostrophe from "greengrocers' apostrophe" when correcting the use of an apostrophe

grin

Alameda Mon 01-Oct-12 20:56:05

argh

want a HIDE SELF button

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 20:56:50

OrangeandGoldMrsDeVere Mon 01-Oct-12 21:05:06

Where has everyone gone?

Am I the only person posting on this thread?

<hides self>

usualsuspect3 Mon 01-Oct-12 21:27:29

MN is so slow these days, maybe tech should sort that out first.

InfinityWelcomesCarefulDrivers Mon 01-Oct-12 21:29:51

you can only hide one NC though. So everyone who's hidden that deeply irritating, twuntish StealthPolarBear would still have the joy of reading my ramblings. And aren't the ones who are the most goady and nasty also the ones who name change a lot?

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 21:33:59

Ah,biut then you can hide them again, and if its attached toi report, mnhq can get a better idea oif what a twat so and so's been!

HotheadPaisan Mon 01-Oct-12 22:04:51

Chrome is better than Firefox for alleviating slowness on here I've found.

FunnysInLaJardin Mon 01-Oct-12 22:26:11

Cuervo I have been ticked off again. See previous thread. I think we need to see when we have been reported. The report poster button should flash red and ideally the name of the report should be identified. How else are we to defend ourselves?

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 22:30:42

funny's the problem is, there are some posters who are PO. and I doubt very much that they like the style that some mners (myself included) post in. If we could hide them then that would take away the triggerhappy report-fiends.

dont let it worry you, btw, Ive been ticked off many a time for PA's. usually when nothing else works and I am so fucking livid that I am tempted to smash the computer before i get myself into real trouble.

Maryz Mon 01-Oct-12 22:35:50

I do think it's funny, by the way, that we all think that mumsnet hq would agree with us about who we think are twats.

I have a horror of reporting someone one day, and hq coming back with "acksherly, maryz, X is a lovely and valued member of mumnset and we are very disappointed at your report".

It hasn't happened yet, mind you grin

FunnysInLaJardin Tue 02-Oct-12 09:45:48

so how would a hid the poster button work? Wouldn't you just have loads of gaps in threads and nothing would makes sense? Or would it just be for threads started by a certain poster?

Maryz Tue 02-Oct-12 14:39:40

Funnys, for me, I want a shit list. I want to have a list of people that I can pretend don't exist.

Personally I would prefer it if no-one else could see them either, but I accept that I don't live in an ideal world grin, so I expect I would get threads full of holes.

I don't really think it's possible - but I am just joining in the moaning.

FunnysInLaJardin Tue 02-Oct-12 15:07:46

well why not, we all need a good ole moan about the state of the world etc. A hide button wouldn't really work for me as I don't really remember nasty posters by name.

What I would like though is to know when and who has reported me. Then I would know how to deal with someone when we crossed paths again and not eg call them a twat due to their inability to handle stuff on a thread all on their own without telling tales.

I know this won't happen, but I can but dream.........
