Can we have a hide poster button, please? It would cut down on cases where posters rub each other up the wrong way, resulting in a ban or slap ion the wrists.

I've finally done that thing where you can see who started the thread, never saw the point in it before.

I now hide before I succumb to the temptation of opening. Otherwise it's like trying not to pick a scab!

Tbh there are very very few posters I'd use it for, purely because people who boil your piss on one subject can also be great on another.

I do agree with what HQ have said in the past aswell. It could make threads difficult to follow at times and also I think if people started using too easily then it removes a poster's chance to either apologise or explain themselves IYSWIM.

Say someone was all over a thread with really ignorant opinions so you instantly hide them. You could easily miss finding out why they have these opinions or miss them actually changing their opinions.

I do see it's appeal I really do but I don't think it's that simple. Perhaps just a hide post button maybe? I don't know

I just hide all benefit bashing ones now, I learnt my lesson there.

The problem is a poster I had a proper slanging match with on a benefit bashing thread has been really lovely about loads of other things.

I would support this. It would also cut down MNHQ's workload massively, I think, as people could just avoid being drawn into arguments with irksome types, and there would be far fewer exasperated "Oh do fuck off" -type posts.

I'd like MNHQ to have an invisibility button for goaders. They wouldn't know, but other posters wouldn't see them or respond to their posts, and they'd get bored and fuck off.

But I suppose if we had the self-discipline to actually follow the guidelines, this would be entirely unnecessary .

I've used a script to achieve this on here, it works. No disruption to the threads, there's no obligation to answer anyone about anything anyway and in a fast-moving thread people often don't answer direct questions so people don't even know you've hidden them. You can also favourite posters and change their colour for balance.

They might but I would already have hidden them so I wouldn't see them say that. It could get petty and heated but it does anyway. It worked for me when I used it.

You wouldn't know, no alert, but you could assume it after the 50th goading of someone still didn't get a response but you can see they are still on the thread. The way the script I used worked it that it highlighted their name but hid their post so you could skip past it. Hiding the name and post completely would work better.

I did suggest to RebeccaMN that in exchange for cake I could have a free hold on MN for the day. We negotiated and settled on a morning. Just think of the fun.

I definitely agree it would be worth it to be able to hide the goaders because I usually end up either pissing myself off by biting or hiding the whole thread just because of one poster.

The only problem with a "hide poster" option, is that all the sensible posters who know they are a twat will hide the twats.

And the poor newbies won't realise and will try to reason with them, with no support. And they might (horror) think we are silently agreeing.

We need a "I have hidden you because you are a twat" emoticon.

I use Another Parenting Forum (not nethuns) that has an Ignore User button. Hardly anyone uses it. It does disrupt the flow and the only people who really deserve it need Reporting anyway, not hiding.

Truly, don't bother. It's just another annoying button to press by accident on a so-called "smart"phone.

I can pm links to discussions of the pointlessness by those who have access to such delights, if hq or I suppose anyone else is interested.

BTW I used to be on Delphi Forums and they encourage the use of the ignore button rather than reporting. In fact, if you report someone you get a message saying 'have you tried ignoring the poster?'

It doesn't interrupt the flow. You just see their name and the option to unhide that particular post or the poster in general.

why can't the report button include an option to hide poster, so you have to report to hide but can't hide without reporting?

Actually, Delphi Forums also has a sort of invisible poster option where a mod can mark someone as a Bozo, I think it is, and they think they are posting as normal, but it doesn't appear on the boards at all.

on vBulletin it was called 'tachy goes to Coventry' for some reason but it always seemed a bit cruel

Cuervo I have been ticked off again. See previous thread. I think we need to see when we have been reported. The report poster button should flash red and ideally the name of the report should be identified. How else are we to defend ourselves?

funny's the problem is, there are some posters who are PO. and I doubt very much that they like the style that some mners (myself included) post in. If we could hide them then that would take away the triggerhappy report-fiends.

I have a horror of reporting someone one day, and hq coming back with "acksherly, maryz, X is a lovely and valued member of mumnset and we are very disappointed at your report".

so how would a hid the poster button work? Wouldn't you just have loads of gaps in threads and nothing would makes sense? Or would it just be for threads started by a certain poster?

Funnys, for me, I want a shit list. I want to have a list of people that I can pretend don't exist.

Personally I would prefer it if no-one else could see them either, but I accept that I don't live in an ideal world , so I expect I would get threads full of holes.

well why not, we all need a good ole moan about the state of the world etc. A hide button wouldn't really work for me as I don't really remember nasty posters by name.

What I would like though is to know when and who has reported me. Then I would know how to deal with someone when we crossed paths again and not eg call them a twat due to their inability to handle stuff on a thread all on their own without telling tales.

I know this won't happen, but I can but dream.........
