Which websites would you be happy to let your children loose on?

We'd like to include in our "how to keep your children safe on the internet guide" - a Mumsnet top 50 (20?, 10?) sites you'd be happy to let your children loose on.

Please post your recommendations here.

I think it needs to be broken down into age groups really. I have 2 (aged 3 and 6).

3 - only cbeebies (under supervision for fear of destroying computer)

6 - cbeebies/playhouse disney/nick junior, plus a host of sites recommended by school (i'll find the list later), pretty much unsupervised.

Just cbeebies here and it really irks me that if he clicks on some of the characters on the cbeebies page it automatically takes him onto the CBBC site. Think there should be a way of this not happening.

Yes BBC sites for kids are always a good bet.
Nickolodian, stardoll, disney channel are fairly harmless.

But I would still have a setting on the PC for parental control. We use cyber patrol which is really good. It picks up the smallest swear word and refuses access. You can set it up with multiple users so it won't restrict you when you want to use the PC.

One word of warning for a site for slightly older girls. DD1(11) saw a site mentioned in a book she was reading called gossipgirl.com. She said "It's like your mums net but for kids" (I don't let her on here BTW and her cyber patrol blocks it if she ever tried)

I had a look at it and there is NO WAY it is suitable for girls under about the age of 15. Nasty bitchy stuff and too much sex talk.

Be warned.

breaking down by ages would be great - top idea. If you could put approx ages next to sites that would be wonderful

The 3 and 4 yr old go on Nick jr or cbeebies.
8 and 10 yr old use club penguin and toontown.

Mine are 8 and 10 they love club penguin,and are desperate to become members but I have heard some horror stories about direct debits so not too sure about full membership.

Poisson Rouge is fabulous

DD is 2.11 and only recently discovered how to use the mouse, so this is as far as we have got!

Dd, 4: CBeebies, Poisson Rouge (as recommended by NQC) with floating supervision
Ds, 8: Club Penguin (full membership, paid annually, no probs), CBBC, MiniClip, Minimus, Telegraph GridClub, BBC Education, with no supervision for Club Penguin etc but basic supervision for general surfing/googling

kneebouncers/poissonrouge/storyplace.org for ds2 (2.10)

Poissonrouge is fantastic - recommended it to DS school and they now regularly use it to introduce mouse skills etc.

dd is 7 and surfs the net on her own. She was taught how to use a computer at school, and how to google. So really, she goes wherever she pleases, which is why we only let her use the computer where we can see what she is up to. I'm not sure about parental controls and how they work, but I personally wouldn't trust any substitute for supervisions.

She likes disney websites, particularly the princess bits. Hannah Montana website, poisoon rouge, nick junior, uptoten.com, ebay(!), show me, etc.
