Would a 'Point Taken' facility be a good thing?

especially on AIBU?

So many times someone asks an AIBU question, or other, and they get a swift and unanimous response....and then it goes on...and on...and they say 'yes, thank you, i realise i am being Unreasonable...I will take your point...and the criticism and naying for blood gathers pace because no-one has resad the whole thread, and it stays in active convos, and the OP goes back and says 'but i did say I had listened to you and have changed my view...and then another 3 posters come on and castigate them....and it's as boring as this great long repetitive sentence....and no doubt demoralising fr the poor OP....

Could an OP have the facility to 'lock' a thread with 'thank you, point taken'?

I suggested being able to amend your OP - not change it, but have a bit added on the bottom - then she could have posted YES I KNOW I AM

WideWebWitch · 23/10/2007 11:06

Oh no, I don't like the idea of an OP being able to shut everyone up by locking the thread. But I am particularly awful about being told not to post (unless it's mnhq in which case I obey)

Can't people just type "thanks, point taken - thanks for these new posts but we've moved on, cheers, ta, thanks, muchly hunxxxx"?

WideWebWitch · 23/10/2007 11:07

Oh is this the parcel one? See, I opened that, saw she'd agreed she WBU and so didn't bother posting. If people want to carry on and on and on arguing amongst themselves, hey, let 'em

Report
MerlinsBeard · 23/10/2007 11:10

the parcel one yes but other ones noooo

you would get ppl locking the trhead because they disagree with the outcome!

i would like threads to be locked after a certain amount of time though. It gets on my nerves when someone bumps a 3 year old thread asking for the same advice thats already given in the trhead in the first place.

It could just be me though

I think if people could lock threads, then there would just be OTHER threads saying "hey, that locked thread - come and fight discuss it here!"

My idea is better

WWW - people don't read the whole thread, just the OP

MerlinsBeard · 23/10/2007 11:13

not PEOPLE locking threads...MNHQ would have the keys

(i do know they are people too btw!)

WideWebWitch · 23/10/2007 11:16

Agree, LL idea is better ALTHOGUH I really think OPs should only be able to add NOT delete.

Otherwise it re writes history and could make a thread totally nonsensical.

littleNonSpecificHolidaylapin · 23/10/2007 11:20

Oh yes, WWW, definitely only add to, not amend or delete bits.

MNHQ aren't people! They're fembots (that's Tech in the middle )

Report
Blu · 23/10/2007 11:26

Not for clamping down discussion - just for leaving "thanks, point taken - thanks for these new posts but we've moved on, cheers, ta, thanks, muchly hunxxxx"? as the last post on the thread. Because people really don't read the thread and see that the OP HAS accepted the advice . In fact half the time people only read the thread title and pile in without even having read the OP - which is the problem with Lapin's excellent idea.

The 7.45 one is only a minor example...I can think of ones that went nasty for days....and mostly, it's the boredom factor for the rest of us!

From Fembot number 2562:
Hmm, not sure about this one. We're having a meeting next week and we'll see what we think.

Can you imagine if we could amend thread titles:

AIBU To think 7.45am is too early to ring someone's doorbell (even if you are delivering a package)

AIBU To think 7.45am is too early to ring someone's doorbell (even if you are delivering a package)(Edit: yes, OK I am)

lol LL, exactement, I can see that happening! Mind you, I don't really have a strong opinion on this, don't know why I'm sounding like I do!

I don't see why the OP can't just leave and let everyone else get on with shouting at her (in absence) but then I am just continuing this thread way beyond the original point...............

Hmm we are not so keen on locking threads as a principle or editing posts because it could lead to confusion about who said what when. But we do know what you mean and why this is annoying... We hope this is one of the things that will be improved by customisable talk - coming this pm barring a hurricane in Florida. This will give you a facility to ignore a particular thread - ie remove from your active conversations list - as well as the ability to ignore whole topics.

Thanks for the thought as ever - we can of course re-visit this if customisable talk doesn't help.

tissy · 25/10/2007 11:58

how about a voting facility, so that the OP can see what proportion of MNers agree with her.

I would be quite happy to click yes or no on a thread rather than adding a comment that is just the same as everyone elses.

I thought that too tiwg, but then I realised the only person I would ignore would make a thread make not an awful lot of sense to me.

I like the idea of having a point taken facility - good idea, blu. Could this come up on top of the 'new message' box so when people come to a thread late and add a message, they can see the OP has already changed his/her view?

One thing worries me about the actual locking of threads: I post sporadically and at odd hours (I can't mumsnet from work, so often post very early am or very late pm). This means I miss a lot of discussions when they are at their most active.

I get the impression that mumsnet is at its busiest during the daytimes. I would find it frustrating not to be able to add my views when I am around because I'd missed the time slot.

Report
Blu · 25/10/2007 23:35

Yes, maybe instead of 'locking' the thread, the words 'thank you, point taken' by the OP could be printed in red at the top of the thread or something. Of course Twig et al, and maybe you after hours, Tigermoth, will still need to contribute, but it would stop the 'point taken' post being lost under a tide of 'YABU, you unfeeling unreasonable miserable excuse for a MN-er!'.

Or maybe it is a customisation too far.
