Yes you can find which websites have linked to yours by typing 'link:' followed by your web address into Google. Eg, to see which sites link to MN you would type link:www.mumsnet.com

How else do you think they attract advertisers.
Whole armies of people are employed in marketing to post on forums such as these and put up links extolling their products.

Most sites will have Website statistics which will tell them where visitors came from (which page they were on first)

Advertisers adverts are all tracked

Yes, if it's a link and someone's clicked through via it you can see in your website statistics where they came from.

However, it's arguable whether a large company like M&S are likely to notice a small number of clickthroughs (sorting through the wheat from the chaff in website statistics can be a full time job when it's busy!).
