Not sure if this is the right place for this, but WHY are MNHQ still passing on (and no doubt receiving money for) media requests from the DM??

As a poster on the recent DM "shy child" thread pointed out, why haven't MN, as a parenting website, stopped ALL dealings with DM when companies like Lego have committed to doing so?

Because MN is not a political lobbying group and loads of mn users read the DM.

Could you not say the same about Lego though? It is not a political group and I'm sure lots of DM readers buy it!

I had the impression the the DM was pretty widely derided by many MN posters, but maybe I've not been reading enough threads.

MN aren't advertising in the Daily Mail, which is what the Stop Funding Hate campaign is all about.

MN may feel that the DM will simply rip off content if they don't publish the Media Request (which is free). Very difficult editorial policy, deciding which Media Requests to accept and which not. That said, this headline on its own would be enough to convince me to have nothing to do with them.

Best not to live in an echo chamber, refusing to even hear what people are saying hasn't ended well this year. I try to listen and make my own mind up not shut down anything I think I won't like and I don't want to live with a censored press. I certainly don't want NN to take on a censorship role and I bet they don't either.

Yes, that's my feeling too, tribpot. I realise there's not much they can do about the DM using material from existing threads, but I do think that passing on media requests is going one step further. To me it feels like they are condoning the current horrendous tone of the articles in the DM. And if no money changes hands, then what is the benefit to MN?

Hi folks. In case you hadn't spotted it here's what JustineMumsnet said about this on the Daily Mail's media request thread earlier, which might answer a few of these questions:

Hello everyone. No money exchanged hands here at all, honest - we don't charge for media requests. Back in the day we did charge #30 per request but we don't now and haven't for a while.
We do tend to filter media requests that come direct to us - and only post those we think are from proper kosher journos on subjects not likely to cause a bunfight. Obviously some people have very strong feelings about the Daily Mail but obviously lots of Mumsnetters read it (we can tell from Google analytics as well as our annual census).
I agree the regular lifting of whole MN threads is a bit much and we are looking at our rights here. Will keep you all posted.

Are you fairly new?

The DM is the most widely read and linked to newspaper on MN by a clear mile.
