Don't mind if MNHQ don't want to comment on this, but I hope they read it...
MN is clearly struggling tech-wise. Most other technically comparable sites don't: repeatedly let porn through among their ads, take months to debug a problem that stops many users doing something basic (change nn), fail to trial a change of experience (forced log-in) and then apparently offer a compromise that doesn't actually work, etc. etc.
The root causes might include: too few techs; techs who don't have the necessary skills; the site being built on legacy software that even competent techs can't keep running properly; most likely, some combination of these things.
Whatever the cause is, I hope MNHQ has a medium-term strategy for fixing it, because it's not going to get better on its own. You're driving some users away, driving others to use ad blockers, probably damaging your SEO... all this is bad for the bottom line.
Sorry if this all sounds patronising, I only say it because I care. Will let you off my usual consultancy fee
