What is it with the place marking frenzy?

I'm fairly new here but beginning to find my way around. When there's an interesting post with lots of replies people start "blatantly place marking" all over the shop. What's that all about? Surely these people who've been on MN lots longer than me have discovered the bookmark option on a thread? Am I missing something here or do I need to start "blatantly place marking"?

It's because if you don't post on a thread you don't get the deletion message. Most "place marking" is on threads people think will get deleted.

I think.

I think it's because of the flaw in MN that means you only get to see a deletion message on a troll thead if you've posted it.

It would make things much better it this was also available on a watched thread.

because you'll get the juicy deletion message

The deletion messages aren't really that exciting IMO. I understand place marking either.

If the thread suddenly disappears it's either to protect the posters privacy or troll.

And anyway, what is it with newer folk coming on and telling us we're doing it ALL WRONG? How d'you like THEM apples then?

It's really annoying - especially when a thread fills up quickly, and you have to scroll through pages and pages of people place marking. Boring.

If i want to placemark I actually write something-I think of something. I think it's pretty rude to just put a full stop or 'placemarking' on a thread that might actually be real.

You don't have to be polite to trolls.

Can't book mark on my phone, so I place mark.

It's not placemarking in terms of "this is where I've read up to" it's more that they want the thread to go into threads I'm on because they don't use watching. Or, yes, the deletion message thing.

Never mind, Donkey. When they close Classic and move you onto New, you'll find out all about bookmarks. Grin
