I am asking this is the most genuine way, as I am curious. Please don't take it any other way.

What I want to know is... Is Mumsnet for parents and those TTC Etc? Or is it a general chat room?

It might seem a daft question, but recently I have seen a number of posts recently started by people saying 'I don't have kids and I don't want them' somewhere in the topic. This has me Hmm as surely the clue is in the name?

It's for anybody and everybody and long may that be true.

Its for anyone

Anyone who wants to post here, abides by the rules and hasn't been banned is welcome.

Not everyone who wants to be a parent can be a parent.
Not everyone wants to be a parent but they can nevertheless be interested in participating in the wide ranging topics of conversation that aren't all directly connected with parenting.

It's all fine.

It is for anyone. Apart from children. Or trolls.

I don't have kids and I don't want them'

That's me!

Mumsnet is: Sweary like no other, active, supportive, hilarious, interesting, intelligent, and a great way to procrastinate.

It may have started out for mums, but things do grow and develop except a baby in my womb. Changing the brand is far more of a faff than just accepting your wider audience and participants for what or whom they are.

There's a great variety of people on here.

The more the merrier, I say.

as long as they aren't trolls

There's plenty of stimulating discussion on here which isn't related to parenting.

It does make the 'by patents, for parents' (have I even got that right Blush?) tag line a bit odd, off course Smile

Parents, not patents Hmm

Have a look at the list of topics available and you'll see the vast majority have nothing to do with being a parent. Even people without children generally have some involvement with them.

It's a busy site with interesting people on it. Whether you've got kids or not is largely irrelevant.

Sparklingbrook · 08/08/2016 23:36

I would think the tag line dates back to when the site was started when it was exactly that. 'By people for people' sounds all wrong though.

IAmSeriousAndDontCallMeShirley · 08/08/2016 23:36

I think that's what got me all confused. The tag line suggests otherwise.

Perhaps time for a rebrand MN?

Some of my favourite posts are the non children related ones. So I for one am happy, just a bit confused (new to MN...) Smile

Why would they rebrand? People without children find their way here and are welcomed with no issue at all. They're known as mumsnet. It seems daft to undo all the marketing!

Report
Sparklingbrook · 08/08/2016 23:40

I agree Purple. No need to rebrand at all.

By parents, for parents and non-parents would be very agreeable Smile

EnquiringMingeWantsToKnow · 08/08/2016 23:43

Well the "By parents, for parents" is definitely a bit questionable, given the number of childfree people here (and welcome) talking about Georgette Heyer or Guinea Pigs or even their life as a childfree nanny.

Report
Sparklingbrook · 08/08/2016 23:44

Strictly speaking it should be ' by parents and non parents for parents and non parents'. Which is just awful as a tag line.

I think it's so well known as Mumsnet that it's unlikely to be rebranded.

It's evolved into a general chat forum, but its USP is that it's mainly used by women.
