A change to the reports system

Hi all,

As you know, we rely on MNers to use the 'report' link if they spot anything untoward on the boards - and we very much appreciate it when you do. We want to be able to be more responsive to these reports generally, so we're going to stop sending individual acknowledgment mails for now; we think this will free up a fair bit of time which could be better spent elsewhere.

When you report a post, you'll now see this message:

Thanks very much for reporting this - we rely on your reports to make sure Mumsnet is a brilliant place to come for support and advice.

In order to best focus our efforts, we tend not to respond to reports individually - but be assured that we read every single one, and that we'll look into the problem as soon as possible.

And we'll be highlighting a few links to places you might want to go next.

We'll continue to mail folks directly as and when the need arises - and as mentioned, we'll be reading each and every report, come what may. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please do ask!

Good idea, I've thought this for a while, I appreciate getting a reply but it's really not necessary (assuming you do post on the thread)

That's the idea Stealth. Not on every single one reported, but certainly on more than we do atm.

Oh I will miss my email exchanges with MNHQ!

I will also miss the link to the thread in question which we get in response to reports - helps to keep up with what happens to a thread without posting on it.

Can we please have deletion messages showing up in Watched Threads, not just Threads I'm On?

Sensible idea Rebecca. It must be extremely time-consuming to answer them all. I certainly don't expect a reply but most of my reports are for spammers anyway.

Just scratching my head slightly over "And we'll be highlighting a few links to places you might want to go next" ... can you clarify?

The links will be to Site Stuff, back to the thread, to FAQs and our guidelines too.

It seems like a good way forwards. It's nice to get an acknowledgement that the report has registered but I'd be happy with an automated one.

In order to best focus our efforts, we tend not to respond to reports individually - but be assured that we read every single one, and that we'll look into the problem as soon as possible.

On the recent disablist posts thread, there was a discussion about the actual report being noted but there wasn't always time to read the detailed content of each individual report.

If this is the case is the above unnecessary overpromising and would a 'we check every single report' statement be more appropriate?

Like where? Is that a euphemism? ConfusedSmile

Will that go for app reports as well though? (The acknowledgment.)

I reported a TAAT recently but had no acknowledgement and it is still running - that will be why then!

Sounds good to me. Especially if it frees up more time for MNHQ to sort out the spammers/trolls/snarky people.

Can we have a few more tick boxes though?

Spam
Troll
Personal Attack
Thread going all kinds of wrong
Real or no Real

But most of all

That's a bit sad-I got some great advice about moving from Becca but it makes sense.

Is it possible though to comment on the thread if it has been reported as a troll, to say you've investigated and it's not a troll?

I've reported a few recently which haven't had an email back (which is obviously fine) but then no note on the thread either - wouldn't it be helpful to avoid troll hunting too if you can say that you don't believe the op is a troll?

Report
ErrolTheDragon · 13/07/2016 13:22

Queen, that might fall into the 'mail directly as and when the need arises' - they're not saying there will only be auto response just that's the default.

Anyway, ITA it makes sense to free up MNHQ resources.

Marsis · 13/07/2016 13:26

A tick box 'I think this poster is a troll' would be good. Would make reporting quicker and sometimes it just a feeling and hard to write exactly what it is that's arising suspicion.

yes and no It all depends on the volume of reports tbh. We don't like to interrupt when we don't need to so if we get one report about an OP then we will look into it. If they are found not to be a troll then we will just leave it. If we get ten reports about the same poster and it's all good then we will post to put folks minds at rest and to stop the reports coming in.

It is against the guidelines to troll hunt anyway, so us posting should not factor into it. We ask people to report and not troll hunt (and report for troll hunting).

We know this will rely on trust and we will reply sometimes, just not with the 'thanks, we'll take a look' type mails as we'd like to be able to come on and explain things when necessary and this frees us up to be able to do that.

Hi Rebecca, hope you see this as I was going to send an email to HQ to say thanks to you personally for your super efficient whack-a-troll/PBP efforts earlier this morning. There were quite a few threads that I'd reported and I was very pleased how quickly you dealt with them, and no messing about either Wink. Thank you

Back to the thread topic. I can see the reasoning behind this, only downside I can see is that without getting a reply, if the thread doesn't actually get deleted we won't know for sure if HQ ever received the report.
I also agree with Bore, I'll miss my email exchanges with HQ as well and it will be harder for us to keep a trail of posts we've reported.

Anyway, whatever it takes for HQ to be able to get rid of trolls, offensive posters and PBPs as quickly as possible. I'm all for that.

I think it's a great idea, although it was nice to get an email from HQ I don't really think it necessary.....and I always wondered what the etiquette was.......should I reply which may lead to HQ having to send another email? Or was it rude to ignore?
It's a minefield I tell you a minefield Grin

I always thought the emails back were a bit unnecessary and as a PP said, a tick box option would be useful - like when you report an Instagram or Twitter post. Something like:

Spam
Inflammatory
Abusive
Suspected troll

Would help MNHQ to categorise and analyse, would take away the need for MNers to have to try and describe issues - an optional text box for further details if folk wanted maybe?
