Could we follow the lead of at least one of the official campaigns and suspend discussions of the referendum for 24 hours?

MNHQ could you lock the relevant board and threads?

Just5minswithDacre Thu 16-Jun-16 15:44:48

Please.

wibblewobble8 Thu 16-Jun-16 15:45:08

surely if you dont want to read/discuss it dont open the thread? i like reading all the referendum stuff. Dont spoil it for everyone else.

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp Thu 16-Jun-16 15:46:02

just give it its own topic?

Just5minswithDacre Thu 16-Jun-16 15:46:22

As a mark of respect wibble, not to force myself not to partake,

Just5minswithDacre Thu 16-Jun-16 15:46:49

It has its own topic but there are other threads.

Tiggeryoubastard Thu 16-Jun-16 15:49:53

Sorry I disagree. Denying people the right to discuss something is wrong. And would not be a mark of respect. I'm not of the same political persuasion as poor Jo but somehow I think denying free speech wouldn't sit right with her very admirable principles. The campaigns doing so are a different matter.

Just5minswithDacre Thu 16-Jun-16 15:51:59

Okay, you disagree.

I disagree with your take on it.

I'm just making a suggestion.

PalmerViolet Thu 16-Jun-16 15:53:42

I agree.

If the news reports are true, then it would be sensible to suspend posting on those threads for now.

This isn't about freeze peach, it's about having some bloody respect.

PortiaCastis Thu 16-Jun-16 15:58:35

Yes both sides have suspended campaigning for today. The poor MP I hope she survives

RaptorInaPorkPieHat Thu 16-Jun-16 16:03:05

I agree. It would be a nice show of respect/solidarity.

ApocalypseSlough Thu 16-Jun-16 16:10:24

I agree. Really strongly. And looking forward I think that in future when something like this happens there should be a facility to 'lock debate' after Orlando and this case there's nothing more to be said by randoms on the internet than how sad/ praying etc. Speculation and reporting hearsay such as Isis/ homophobic/ Britain First is pointless and can cost lives.

Stellars Thu 16-Jun-16 16:16:04

I agree. Nothing to do with free speech.

TresDesolee Thu 16-Jun-16 16:18:07

The attack on jo cox is absolutely horrific and I'm sure everyone who posts here is hugely upset by it and desperately hoping she will be alright.

Re MN locking threads about the referendum, I think a lot depends on whether the referendum will go ahead (and I've not seen any suggestion so far that it won't - I think it might take an act in parliament to change the date?) We're about to take an absolutely huge decision and shutting down debate about it (even out of respect for jo cox) doesn't feel like a good response to me. Plus, realistically, about 100 people ever day would come on and start threads about it without realising they shouldn't. It seems untenable.

Agree speculation about her condition should be deleted, of course

Just5minswithDacre Thu 16-Jun-16 16:20:26

. Nothing to do with free speech.

Absolutely.

SoupDragon Thu 16-Jun-16 16:47:40

The thing is, what other "events" do you think should cause a lock down on discussion?

I think it is unworkable and actually pointless as a mark of respect.

ApocalypseSlough Thu 16-Jun-16 16:59:34

Soup I'm thinking not just about respect but damage limitation. It can be very dangerous speculating on the motives in these cases.

BertrandRussell Thu 16-Jun-16 17:03:29

Why is speculating about the motives particularly dangerous in this case?

Just5minswithDacre Thu 16-Jun-16 17:05:51

Could we get back to the issue of whether a moratorium on REFERENDUM discussion would be a good idea as a mark of respect for Jo Cox, who is in critical condition?

SoupDragon Thu 16-Jun-16 17:07:48

That's what I was talking about.

And no, I think its a bit pants as a mark of respect.

BertrandRussell Thu 16-Jun-16 17:08:21

I don't know her- but she doesn't sound like the sort of person who would want people to stop debating on her behalf.

KateLivesInEngland Thu 16-Jun-16 17:08:26

I just hide all the threads.
I know what I think and I'm sick of people asking in or out? Wherever I go!!

Just5minswithDacre Thu 16-Jun-16 17:19:59

Kate an MP had been killed.

PortiaCastis Thu 16-Jun-16 17:36:06

Condolences to her dh dc and wider family

Queenbean Thu 16-Jun-16 17:49:53

It's tragic, totally awful and I feel so much for her family

But I'm not sure it's right to lock certain topic boards. I mean, where do you draw the line? Ie with the child who sadly got taken by alligator - do you lock boards after that? And if so which ones? I think it would be better to keep discussion boards open and then for people to stick to the talk guidelines.
