Update to Talk menu

JessicaMumsnet · 06/06/2016 15:34

As part of our ongoing design update we'll be making a change to the main menu on Talk. This change is already live on the homepage and we'll be rolling it out everywhere in the coming weeks.

A few people had problems with the colour of the dropdown before being too dark and disrupting the page so we've changed that in favour of a white background. We've also brought the Angels back in the dropdown and tidied up the font and spacing to bring everything together.

We've also made some small adjustments to the homepage and will be testing a static image alternative to the top carousel in the coming weeks.

As ever this is part of an ongoing process of tweaking and testing with the aim to make Mumsnet more consistent and more usable. Please do let us know if you have any thoughts or improvements you'd like to see.

Um, thanks, that was as clear as mud Grin

WTF are Angels?!

JessicaMumsnet · 06/06/2016 19:41

Hello Fru,

Sorry that wasn't clear! The angels have long been part of the Mumsnet logo and when we introduced a more compact menu we had to remove them. We thought we'd bring them back inside the dropdown. Smile

If you're on a desktop computer and you click on the hamburger in the menu (three little lines on top of each other) you should spot them.

The pages are still jumping around despite being reported several times a good couple of months ago now - any chance of this getting sorted any time soon???

Sorry SilkandSteel, we'll follow up with tech and come back to you

Oh, those Angels! I thought Angels was some weird technospeak Grin

I agree with Silk, the pages are now even slower and jumping around.

Also, I noticed this morning when I went to log-in that the log-in page is not https just http. I thought that the https was introduced after JeffreyGate?

Same here regarding the page jumping when loading.

The last I heard, it was because I use an ad blocker? Thing is, if I don't, the pages take too long to load with the adverts anyway.

Yes, there was no https when I signed in earlier and I just had to sign in again a little while ago, because I got automatically signed out.

Hello! I just wanted to add my feedback about the floating menu thingy that appears when you scroll upwards (thread here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/2655123-Floating-logo-masthead-thingy).

Basically, if you roll it out, could it please be disable-able? I browse MN during quiet moments at work because it's mostly plain text and looks pretty innocuous to passers-by, but the constant blue 'Mumsnet' thing popping up conspicuously is rather ruining that!

I take it the new log in screen is part of the changes but it doesn't seem to be keeping me logged in?

Report
FruStefanOla · 07/06/2016 19:02

I never stay logged-in. I only log-in when I want to post - and I log-out when I've finished.

But I noticed something else weird today. I usually MN from my laptop, but sometimes I MN from my iPad when I'm out. Saw a thread I wanted to contribute to (whilst I was out today) tried to log-in from my iPad and it all went very strange indeed. Clicked on the log-in option, it opened with the boxes for my email address and password - and as soon as I clicked on to enter my email address, although the iPad keypad came up on the screen the boxes for email address and password disappeared altogether. Obviously I couldn't log-in until I got home to my laptop.

Also, there appear to be problems with PMs over the last couple of days - not for me - but other MNers have been complaining about it.

And I have to say that most of this weird stuff has been since the Techs had their latest tinker Hmm

Just repeating what I posted on the other thread:

Yes, please stop this. Irritating junk that leaps out and covers the content I'm actually on MN for.

Would be annoying enough if it contained anything useful.

But why on earth would I want any of those items so desperately I couldn't bear to scroll up to the top of the page for them? You know, the once in six months I might actually do something on my account? And ironically the Hopeless Search box is getting in the way of the Advanced Search box, which I do use.

I can't wait for this particular design fad to pass: it's crapping up quite a few websites I used to use easily.

Yay!!! The angels are back. I couldn't give two shiny shits about the other changes - I'm just glad to see the angels again.

I agree with Mackerel about not liking the floating logo/masthead thingy that appears when you scroll up the page (it makes me think I'm almost at the end of the thread when I'm not). I've also had 2 identical ones before now, one immediately under the other.

The delay in loading the page where it jumps after a few seconds is also still doing my nut.

This is the problem where I get 2 of the floating mast head thingys.

One of them is bad enough, but two.....

Hello again,
We've spoken to tech about the jumping about reported. They're struggling to replicate the issue but we think it's down to scrolling down before the page has finished loading. When the page has finished it will jump to the top of the page at first and then it automatically jumps/moves back down to the previous position you were in. We're still optimising the page load speed and will try to improve matters.
Sorry, we realise it must be annoying.

NorbertDentressangle and FruStefanOla, both those issues sound like bugs - we'll flag to tech. Thanks for reporting!

Hey MackerelOfFact (great name btw!) We'll ask tech is it's possible to have the option to disable, no promises as it may be too tricky but we'll give it a go. Thanks Flowers

If it can't be optionally disabled, get rid of it entirely.

Seriously, what benefit is it? To whom? How many times a year day?

This might come as some surprise to you, JessicaMumsnet and the Tech team - but I actually don't want to have to wait forever and a day.

I have no issue with advertising on MN - at all - but I guess the number of Ads - plus other 'stuff' - all over the place is surely slowing the site down to the point it's becoming irritating.

And I bet you lot are all using the latest, whizzy, up-to-date devices? Some of the rest of us aren't.

Strangely enough the only device I don't have a problem with it happening with is my £50 Kindle Fire!! It happens on my laptop and phone though.

But yes it is beyond irritating.

Hi FruStefanOla, we're sorry we realise it is frustrating and we're doing our best. We have lots of devices in the office which we can test on including older ones. We've looked into the ads and we don't think it's related to that. Thank you for bearing with us while we try to improve. Flowers

The jumping page stuff has been going on for several days.
Not good at all :( It really is annoying me.

Report
WorraLiberty · 09/06/2016 10:18

JessicaMumsnet I use desktop Chrome and desktop Firefox and I can 100% state that the jumping is due to having to use an ad blocking program.

Even tech said a little while back that it seems to have something to do with it.

When I stop using ad blockers (and I use 2 different ones for 2 different computers) the page jumping stops immediately.

This is the only site that is affected by using ad blocking programs. Even BT mail, which is awash with adverts can cope with me using one without it making the page jump.

I'll have to check but I'm pretty sure this has been a problem now since around Christmas.
