Could we have a button that takes us straight to our last comment

...when we use the "I'm on" tab?

Sometimes threads move along so quickly I have to keep going through trying to find my last comment. It would be really good to have some kind of feature that would automatically take us to our last comment.

I use the mobile version on my iPhone so apologies if it's already available on desktop or the app!

You can bookmark your last comment, although I have no idea how it works on the mobile version.

On the desktop version the bookmark is in the bottom, right hand corner of your post (when you hover your cursor over that area, then you have to click on the word Bookmark). But first you have to go into Customise and check the box that says 'Display Bookmark Links'.

Other chat sites have this I'd like one too but have asked before and it's been ignored.

Yes, as Fru says, use bookmark. On the mobile version swipe to the left and tap bookmark. You can do this on the last post you read or your own post. Next time you go on that thread it will begin at that point.

I agree. I've tried to bookmark but I've never got it to work.

I've never got bookmark to work either. Is it just a visual label or does it actually take you to the marked spot?

It takes you there but in TIO you have to touch the thread title not one of the posts. In the mobile version each post has 3 dots in the bottom RH corner, touch these and one option is bookmark.

If you've forgotten, you can use your search button, on my phone (Iphone) just type in a unique part of your name in the search box (so for me wheret works, for you pfast should) and one of the options is "on this page, pick that and it goes straight to wherever your name first is, you can skip through to your last post easily.

Book mark takes you whereever you marked.invluding on mobile.
On TIO you used to be able to click on the post rather than title & it would take you there.doesnt appear to work now.

Thanks for the replies. The only problem with bookmarking is that I'll end up with hundreds of bookmarks which makes it all confusing. I will try it out though.

The easiest thing would be perhaps a little tab on top of the thread labelled "my comments", which you'd press and you'd get a link to Your last comment.

But you only have one bookmark per thread. So you might bookmark your last post, or bookmark the last post that you read (posted by someone else).

When you go back to that thread, it takes you to your bookmark. You read more of the thread, maybe you post another comment yourself - and then bookmark the last post you read, or your last comment. Then the bookmark 'moves' to that place. You don't get a series of bookmarks on one thread, just your last bookmark.

Wakeup you're definitely not doing it right!

I'm on the mobile site. Every post above the box I'm typing in has three dots beneath the least line. Touch them, you get the Bookmark option. When you bookmark a post the last bookmark you made disappears - so you don't end up with several.

And are your posts highlighted? You do need that as well.

I'm on the mobile site and touching the 3 little dots but there's no bookmark option????

Brie, I don't know about the mobile site, but on the desktop site you have to go into Customise first and check the box that says 'Display Bookmarks Link', save that change and then when you go back to any thread you can bookmark your place.

Report
FruStefanOla · 13/04/2016 08:20

Gruach, you have the bookmark option turned on - but maybe Brie doesn't?

Gruach · 13/04/2016 08:54

Fair point.

But why (MNHQ) is bookmarking optional? That and the highlighting of OP and own posts are both necessary, surely?

Report
WakeUpFast · 13/04/2016 09:12

Oh I see, so when I bookmark my last comment, I'll go back to it when I open the thread? I'm going to test it quickly.

Right, I've got it! So you bookmark your last comment on a thread. This will definitely make life easier, but still quite a long winded process when then could be a simple "my comments" tab somewhere on the screen.

Thanks for all your help!

I bookmark wherever I am on a thread - doesn't have to be my own post.

Report
FruStefanOla · 13/04/2016 09:46

"But why is bookmarking optional?" I agree, Gruach, when I first joined and noticed people saying "bookmarking" all over the place I couldn't figure out how to bookmark at all! It took me ages to find the 'opt in' in Customise.

And, what Gruach said, WakeUp, it doesn't have to be your last post that you bookmark - just the last one that you read before you close the thread.

WakeUpFast · 13/04/2016 09:50

Thanks Gruach and Fru, will be using the bookmark feature on all long threads from now on!

Sorry to keep on but you didn't answer about having your own posts highlighted. Do you?

It's really not longwinded if you do.

Report
WakeUpFast · 13/04/2016 10:51

sorry, yes I do have my own posts highlighted, but by the time I come back to a popular thread it's moved on a few pages and I forget which page I posted on. Also, I have the pages set to a 100 comments per page, as full page took ages to load and constantly went blank as I scrolled down. 100 per page works better for me.

Oh I see. I don't have pages and freely admit I found them rather fiddly when I tried that format.

I'm always surprised to find that other people don't have MN set up exactly as I do! I must try to feel less impatient when posters say they "couldn't be bothered to scroll through 15 pages" or when they don't highlight and then miss the post where the OP says the crisis has been averted or whatever. Still waiting for the app to reach peak tweek and become equally easy to use ...

ShowOfHands · 13/04/2016 11:17

I have bookmark turned on. I bookmark my place. Never once has it taken me back to that post.

Report
WakeUpFast · 13/04/2016 11:30

Yes they are fiddly, but it's better than the page taking hours to load over 500 comments and then blank screen when scrolling down fast because you are feeling irritated! I loved having comments all on one page but when MN changed a few years ago it stopped working for me.

ShowOfHands, that doesn't sound promising...I tested it on one post and bookmarked manually.
