Oh the weather outside is frightful,
but Mumsnetters are so delightful,
since we've no place to go,
let gifts flow, let gifts flow, let gifts flow...

Yes, folks, it's that most wonderful time of the year: the day we launch the Mumsnet Secret Santa! True, it's only the end of September, but Santa requires plenty of time to prepare his sleigh Wink

Secret what, you say? You mean you don't KNOW? Grab a snifter of gin and a cinnamon danish and come sit by us while we tell you all about it.

The way it works is this: we ask Mumsnetters to nominate a fellow Mumsnetter* - someone who's had a tough time recently, perhaps, or someone who has been a fantastic source of support to others - to receive a Christmas gift. At the same time, we also ask for gift donations. Once the nominations and donation offers have come in, we at MNHQ match nominees with donors, and contact the donors to tell them where to send their gifts. Et voila: Merry Christmas, everyone.

And just to be clear: this really is a SECRET Santa. Thanks to our tinselled-up tech team, everyone who takes part in the process is anonymous: special Christmas codenames are assigned at the start to both nominee and donor. Neither the team working on matching up nominees to donors nor the donor sending out the present will have anyone's name or username details, and only those who donate will see the address (and only the address - not the username) of the nominee they've been matched with. Security is our number one priority - if you've any questions or concerns, please do ask on the thread (or email us at [email protected]).

But back to the gifts. This year we've created a special

Secret Santa Christmas grotto

where you'll find all the information you need on how to get involved, an explanation of how this annual feat of logistical wonderment works, and an account of how it came about in the first place.

The grotto is also the place where you can make your nomination (at any time between now and October 15th ) and/or pledge to donate (up until 30th October). There are more details about what sort of thing you might wish to give over there too (vouchers are always a good idea), but basically, every gift is welcome. The idea is to spread some festive cheer and make a Mumsnetter's Christmas that little bit more joyful by showing them that they're in your thoughts.

Now, if you'll excuse us, we have something in our eyes.

*Nominated Mumsnetters do need to have been around for six months. We'll be able to see from our end if that's the case, even if they've namechanged.

I know this is a lovely thing and all that, but after hacker gate and the swatting thing, I'd be very reluctant to give out my postal address to MN.

Did you ever find out how the hackers got the address of the MNer who was swatted?

Sorry to put a downer on it Blush

Bit - it was via Twitter - Jeffrey was able to find address from personal information on there.

... People could give a work address? Or a friend's? ...or tell you what, send all the chocolate related ones to me and I'll post on. I'm totes trustworthy with chocolate. Honest. Wink

Also I think they 192'd the mumsnetter based on her Twitter details didn't they?

I still think this is a potentially nice idea. Perhaps people who feel differently could give a donation to charity instead and post back?

From twitter? Blimey! That's scary!

It really is a lovely idea. I'm sure MNHQ know what they're doing.

bit the person that wasn't Justine that got targeted was because they over-shared info online, nothing to do with Jeffery. Also, Justine's Address is very public information

He wasn't as good as the thought he was. I found out more info on Justine in a ten-minute Google search than he produced through the phishing Smile

Im never a fan of the Secret Santa. I think favorite posters get nominated just because they have a recognisable name and genuine people who could do with a bit of cheer get over looked.

Perhaps people who feel differently could give a donation to charity instead and post back?

This is something I think we should get behind. I make my own local donations but a struggling charity could really benefit from this.

Yes, and there was another attempted SWATting which went wrong because they were sent to the wrong address, so MN weren't the source of the address details at all.

Off to look at info linky now. :)

Ive been nominated twice and am very very thankful but ive had my eyes opened and no way would i give my address along with details this year along with how many adults in house etc. How easy would it be for them to sign up to offer a gift then send horrid stuff or worse to your address for the kick.

I'm new here and was going to sign up for this but who's Jeffrey and swatting?

Can someone please explain ... I've read and re-read but I'm not 100% sure I understand Blush

If you nominate someone, do you buy their gift? Or do you nominate and that person will receive a gift from whatever is donated?

I'd not really thought about the impact of the hacking and stuff. I have nominated but the nominees can say no thanks of course.

Take me, I donate to a couple of charities at Christmas, and throughout the year. I just like to spread a little festive cheer too random strangers too.

frazzled you almost certainly don't.

A nominates B, who likes long baths.
C pledges to donate bath bombs and chocolate.
Sandy matches C's donation to B and starts calling them MNsanta1234 and MN1234 respectively.
C posts bath bombs and chocolate to "MN1234, 1 High Street, Naicetown, Naiceshire, NC1 1YZ"
B ncs to MN1234 to say thank you on the thank you thread.
C ncs to MNSanta1234 to say you're very welcome on the thank you thread.

With so many people having changed names since Jeffrey-gate, how do you now know who is who?

Everyone seems to have a new name now

Report
Sparklingbrook · 28/09/2015 13:31

I assume if you nominate under the name you knew them as last it will get through?

Report
MrsHathaway · 28/09/2015 13:32

Assuming they didn't dereg and rereg.

Report
ALemonyPea · 28/09/2015 13:36

Re name changes, if they've kept the same MN account, then MN can still pm them via their nominated name (I hope)

Report
Sparklingbrook · 28/09/2015 13:38

What if you nominate and the person has deregged never to return?
