I downloaded a free upgrade a few days ago and everything has slowed right down - I mean really badly. It also now shows an icon which says that my computer is unprotected. When you click on the icon to find out why, it merely directs you to its site where they try to flog you more products. Bl**dy nuisance.

Don't have an answer to your question but thought you might like to know that you are not alone!

I have McAfee and it's fine. Are you saying you bought the software and since you bought it it's slowed down? How slow has it made it?

McAfee is shite, plain and simple. The ONLY time I ever got a virus it was when we were using McAfee - McAfee was the first thing to get infected!

I've used it for a couple of years now and it's been OK. To be honest you need to spend some serious money if you want a really decent virus software program.

Right I installed the free upgrade and it made Microsoft Office seize up and then sent the whole computer into a frenzy (constantly refreshing the screen), so I had to re-format my whole computer and re-install everything. Am now using Norton. if you can still access your control panel, uninstall Mcafee and put something else on.

katierocket - not really true. Best antivirus we've had is a complete free one:

AVG Free Version - Got the award for catching 100% viruses in the "wild" for Oct 2006.

Hi All my dp is a bit of a paranoid computer geek so all our computers are secured to the hilt. They all have free antivirus and antispyware etc on them.

Dp recommends
AVG antivirus(free version)
Zone Alarm free firewall
AVG anti spyware..also known as ewido free version)
Ad aware anti malware

and a progam called CCleaner to clear all you cookies etc.

Obviously uninstall any other antivius/firewalls/antimalware programs first, and they all need to be kept updated and regular scans done but most viruses and malware will have no luck infecting you with these intalled.

Hope that helps someone.

See theflumpsmum's list of free security programs - fairly good summary of really good quality software for nowt.

We pretty much use all of that except CCleaner (I clean IE cookies out regularly anyway and firefox just deals with cookies in a much more sensible manner) and we've got a firewall that's installed on our broadband router not the PC so don't need to use Zone Alarm.
