Censoring the truth about Santa? MNHQ policy on this.

TillHammerZeit · 27/11/2014 15:23

Can MNHQ possibly clarify if threads referring to Santa not being real will be censored or not? I was told recently that they won't be,but now it seems that they will be. I'm confused.

Personally I object to adult conversations being censored like this on an adult site intended for adults. Racist and disablist comments are one thing, but are we really not allowed to mention that Santa doesn't exist in thread titles?

If someone's child is reading over their shoulder, then that's their problem to deal with IMHO,not mine,or any other posters' and surely children are just as likely to read it in a thread,as you spend more time in threads, than on the list of topics?

Are we not going to be allowed to swear in thread titles either, because children might be reading?

PS. I don't care if this makes me seem like The Grinch.

that is ridiculous!! if they do....doubt MNHQ would be so daft though

DoughnutSelfie · 27/11/2014 16:13

Thread titles expected to be non committal about the realness or otherwise of the Man in the Red Suit afaik, and yes HQ have changed titles in past years.

grocklebox · 27/11/2014 16:15

Don't be such a grinch. It's a big part of christmas for some people and do you really want to upset people over something so easy not to do?

So you think its silly, so what? By parents, for parents, isnt that the idea? It matters to enough people here so thats the way it is.

AMumInScotland · 27/11/2014 16:18

I saw the thread title you mention earlier - it really wasn't stifling discussion to change the wording to something which was perfectly understandable but less direct, so I don't see why you have such an issue with it.

The thread wasn't censored, the title was modified, that's all.

TheSpottedZebra · 27/11/2014 16:18

I agree, I think it's ridiculous and infantilising to change thread titles for that reason. It's either an adult space, or its not.

Will we also change thread titles that refer to sexual practices, death, war etc etc?

TheSpottedZebra · 27/11/2014 16:20

The fact that I cannot use an apostrophe correctly nor consistently detracts not a jot from my point Blush

LittleBearPad · 27/11/2014 16:20

The title was tweaked slightly. Stop being so grumpy. The censoriousness about Santa and lying is very tedious.

IAmAPaleontologist · 27/11/2014 16:21

Swearing- you explain to your child that it is a grown up word and MN is a grown up website and they are not to use language like that.

Father Christmas- Devastation.

I have no objection to MN changing titles.

WannaBe · 27/11/2014 16:23

thing is though that editing the thread title means it's not entirely clear what it's about, so if you opened the thread then editing the title would be pointless if the dc are reading anyway iyswim.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 27/11/2014 16:26

Will we also change thread titles that refer to sexual practices, death, war etc etc?

Or belief in God? I think we are allowed to question whether God is real. But not Santa?

Bizarre.

TillHammerZeit · 27/11/2014 16:30

I have no objections to Santa. I do have objections to censoring posts for the benefit of people who shouldn't be reading Mumsnet anyway, and who are not the intended audience.

I do appreciate that MNHQ are probably damned if they do,and damned if they don't,but I find this censorship infantilising. It is an adult site.

OP posts:
grocklebox · 27/11/2014 16:31

It is an adult site. And its some of those adults that want this to happen, because its important to them.
So really, why could you give a shiny?

AMumInScotland · 27/11/2014 16:31

"AIBU to be upset at MIL for telling ds this? title edited by MNHQ elves"

I think most parents, at this time of year, might be able to guess the content and decide whether or not to open the thread.

The word 'Santa' (or 'Father Christmas', I can't recall which it was) would jump off the screen at a child in a way that most other terms we don't want them reading threads about isn't as likely to do.

OwlCapone · 27/11/2014 16:32

Choosing thread titles carefully should be a matter of common courtesy, be that swearing, Santa or unpleasant subjects.

Some people will always think this kind of thing doesn't matter though.

TillHammerZeit · 27/11/2014 16:37

I've already explained why I give a shiny. It's infantilising. And it makes me wonder what else might be censored.
The point about God is a good one. I've experienced someone,a relative, practically having hysterics because I dared to say that I don't believe in God in front of their child. So what's next to be censored?

And before anyone mentions racist or disablist comments, that's a completely different situation. I have no problem with those being deleted.

usualsuspect333 · 27/11/2014 16:39

I think the censoring is ridiculous.

MN is an adult site.

LeopardInABobbleHat · 27/11/2014 16:40

I find it a bit twee to have [altered by MNHQ] in a thread about Father Christmas not being real. But if that's the will of the main demographic then

TillHammerZeit · 27/11/2014 16:42

Some adults on the site have objected to swearing in the past,or to God being referred to as an imaginary friend. They have asked for MNHQ to do something about it,and those are things that have offended fellow forum members I.e the intended audience, but those aren't being censored, rightly so IMHO.

TheHappinessTrap · 27/11/2014 16:43

Is this April 1st?

usualsuspect333 · 27/11/2014 16:44

Maybe MNHQ should asterisk all references to S*a out.

Just in case a 5 year old is posting on here.

WannaBe · 27/11/2014 16:46

plenty of thread titles are allowed to stand with swear words in them.

I don't particularly like seeing thread titles with c in them and I certainly don't want my child reading them if my laptop is open. But I wouldn't actually go so far as to suggest mn hq should edit them, instead the responsibility for policing what our children read on our own computers is ours, surely? At this time of year mn is full of threads not only about the existence of santa but threads asking "what have you bought your dc?" should those be edited too for the benefit of children who believe all the presents come from santa? etc?

EveDallasRetd · 27/11/2014 16:47

Oh FFS, really?

You are being bloody ridiculous. What's the matter? Did you need some attention?

Well, they've also censored one which had racist terms in the title (not used as an actual insult). Do you think that is also infantilising?

usualsuspect333 · 27/11/2014 16:48

No, I think OP wants to post on an adult site with other adults.

MrsPepperMintonCandyCane · 27/11/2014 16:49

He's not real???? Shit.
