Pointing out irrelevant spelling errors....

Can this be made 'against Talk Guidelines' please? Where the spelling error is pointed out but everyone knew full well what was meant?

I can then report.

TIA

I thought this was what Pedants' Corner was designed for, so that those of us who get itchy teeth when we see bad grammar and spelling could go and have a nice rant there rather than derail a serious and heartfelt thread with picky remarks?

YY exactly. Some people may like a spelling lesson if they are asking questions about spelling but not so much if they want some advice about anything else.

What kind of bell end does this anyway?

Pfft.

I am a massive pedant but never comment on others' SPAG. It's poor manners!

Yes please. I hate bad spelling and grammar, and even sometimes don't post because I'm finding it so hard to face. But there's no need to respond to someone's serious problems with a post which only comments on their writing ability and doesn't even try to help with the actual problem.

I have seen spelling errors pointed out on lots of threads where not only is it irrelevant (they weren't asking how to spell something) it comes across as a rude and petty thing to do.

I hate this especially when it's a long emotional op and the response is about soldering a paragraphs Hmm

I agree. It is spiteful and it needs to stop.

Hi all,

We have noticed this is becoming a bit of a problem and while we, as MNHQ, can't label anyone as a tithead, we will have a think about whether we need to deal with it in a different way.

i think 'message deleted due to poster being a tithead' would be fine Amy Smile

Agree.
Deleted for titheadedness.

Oh but if I wasn't allowed to do it how would you all know how simply marvellous and clever I am?

SemiSeriously just add the culprits' names to the Wankbadger column in your spreadsheet. It's a nice handy short cut to knowing who is a berk.

And let's face it, it's nearly always bloody autocorrect.

SpaG is one of my biggest bugbears but I'd rather walk away from a thread than make myself look like a giant asshat by making a snide comment.

I think it's only Mumsnet, it not a spelling/grammar exam. So as long as people can understand what you are saying it doesn't have to be perfect. Unless maybe it's a thread about spelling/grammar?

In RL when I see Bath Mat's in Dunelm it makes me really cross but I don't feel the need to have a word. Grin

I really hate it when it's pointed out in a point-scoring way. Though I admit I did point out a spelling error today, though that was to a poster who was upbraiding another poster for upbraiding another poster, but she was making errors herself whilst pointing out someone else's. That's alright, isn't it?

"Grammer nob"? (Misspellings intentional!)

...apart from intentional, which autocorrect caught for me. :o
