Hi MNHQ

Please could you keep a look out for Carpe's message to you about some concerns a group of us have due to contact we have had from potentially malicious sources away from MN but absolutely directly linked to a recent discussion on here relating to someone in the public eye.

We are concerned that particular MNers seem to have been targeted 'electronically' directly in relation to this discussion and wanted to make sure that MN in general is aware and is protected/ is able to protect others how also contributed to that discussion from being targeted in a similar way.

many thanks

Westmorland Sausage

Can you give any more details of how you are being targeted so that the less tech savvy can be made more aware?

Just finished a blog post about what happened, and my subsequant

....until I discovered that ... it's just what twitter does.

Tiwtter is mean and horrible. And complicated. And infested. I have been reliably informed. It does strange things and freaks out the Virgins

I knew I should have just stayed on MN.

If you do go there, tred carefully, stay awake security wise and check put any new followers properly, blocking and reporting if suspect. Become aqauinted with the flower/wheel thingie and learn how to fiddle with it. But not from me cos I had to be hand held throughout operstion clean up.

Personally I'd advice sticking to MN. That new social media.. is HARD ! and EKK!y

MNHQ please never to change anything here. Ever.

Is the flower/ wheel thingie on twitter?

Report
CarpeVinum · 08/01/2014 12:16

Yes, it's a settings wheel. If you get a suspect looking follower, all spammy, you can go to their profile, mthen use the wheel to block and report.

We found that when all of us blocked and reported twitter squished the nasty spammy bot following us. So worth letting the other people being followed know that they have a parasite? attached to them.

We have clearly rattled some cages somewhere as from they way it has been done there hasn't even been an attempt to hide that a very defined group of us have been targeted. Whoever it was that did it either they wanted us to know (in an attempt to intimidate us perhaps?) or they are absolutely shite at covering their tracks.

We figured out we were quite possibly being targeted deliberately because we all now know each other and have been quite vocal about the subject being discussed. To be clear I don't think any of us are worried about the security on mumsnet for other posters (although fab if MNHQ can assure us of that!) but we are concerned that we have been targeted because of a discussion ON mumsnet and that potentially they may turn attentions on to Mumsnet next having failed to intimidate us in other ways.

I'm sure all will be fine but we wanted to draw it to MNHQ attention just in case.

We're fine Pacific

The intent (possibly due to technical limitations of the perp) appears to have been to distract and spook rather than create actual device/identity harm.

Believe MNHQ servers safe from jiggerypokery on that basis. But at the time... incident at my house Grin

I still intend to give up twitter 50 seconds after all this is done and dusted.

I've still not had any responses btw - I think I'll stop holding my breath for any

CarpeVinum · 09/01/2014 08:53

We aren't going to get any love. But I think the response to the emails was to call YouKnowWho and I think that may have been one element that provoked his blogpost. Which was our biggest break yet, cos it basically gave the press the horses' mouth confirmation needed to publish.

Now, there are some other things in prep, like the petitions etc. And of course the wheels of justice are turning. slowly. But turning. So may be good news from that end in the next 2-6 weeks.

Plus, there is a site, electionpredictions or something like that, probably all data was collected before this happened here, but none the less it predicts he will lose his seat by a hefty margin. And I do mean hefty.

I'll go see if I can find it, and will plonk it on the DM thread.

You may not be familiar with the background of these concerns, but they are quite valid.
