Login screen now defaults to "keep me logged in".

I log in every time I use MN, mainly to stop my computer savvy kids logging in and finding out my user name.

The login screen now seems to have defaulted to having the "keep me logged in" box permanently checked. Given that anyone who wants to stay permanently logged in will have already checked that box and won't be visiting that page, can it go back to being unchecked iyswim.

Otherwise one day I'll forget to uncheck it, I'll be outed by a curious teenager, and there'll be no more Mardy. Grin

Just me then?

I noticed that, and considered it just a minor irritation to now have to remember to untick that box every time I log in.

But you've made a good point. Someone could be outed/discovered by much worse than a curious teenager. It would be much better (and in a few cases much safer) if the default was returned to being unchecked.

I suppose I could worry about it more but DS knows nn and Internet is mostly off when work peeps are accessing (or monitored closely by me if on)

DS is teen tho so no worries on accessing any grown up discussions might even spark more debate and I think I'm easily id'd so nothing so far posted would make me Blush

I find it handy to be logged in, but isn't there a cookie keeper you can keep on 'clear when shut down' to avoid p'wd being stored? Can see why you find it awkward.

Bumping this thread, because I'd be interested in other people's views.

As well as MNHQ's view, of course.

It's better for me because if I log in on a new phone, browser, etc and forget to tick it it logs me out on every other device which is a real pain.

However the security issue seems more pressing than a minor irritation for ne.

Sorry posted too quickly just then. That's the type of situation where it's important not to stay accidentally logged in.

This is really annoying now, I'm so used to not having to logout that I forget too which is a real pain in the arse.
Come on mnhq sort this for us please.

I'm going beyond being irritated or annoyed, to becoming rather angry.

Prior to the change, anyone who wanted to stay logged in just had to tick that box once.

Now, anyone who doesn't want to stay logged in has to untick that box every time.

MNHQ: this is a safety issue. And you should know enough from threads on the Relationships area at least that this should be at the top of your priority list to fix.

I agree entirely with OP. Major issues for me if my DS read my posts regarding illness etc.

Hi Mardy,
Previously when the box was unchecked, because lots of folks don't check it, every time we updated the site, which is a few times a week, those users had to log in again. Experience showed us that multiple users find this annoying - there were lots of threads complaining about having to log in repeatedly.

A default "keep me logged in" is pretty standard practice and there is a log out button at the top of every page.

Obviously it's a pain to log out/untick the box when you log in, but it does seem to effect many fewer people than the irritation of logging in. (That said, I do see the point that even though fewer folks are affected, the need to log out might be more pressing than the need to log in).

So that's our dilemma and how we got to where we are but will talk to the tech team and see whether there's any alternative solution we can come up with that could work better for all.
